    So I test-rode a Vaya today

Holy crap. I figured they were nice. Didn't expect to love it. But I was blown away. Very impressed. I've never been into road bikes and hated drop bars for a long time, but lately I've been interested in a touring bike that can handle gravel and dirt with drop bars for easier aerodynamics and all that. I wasn't even in the shop looking for a bike. I was looking for a helmet and ended up eye-balling the Salsas. Guy's like, "wanna try one out?" This is gonna put a crimp in my plan to get a full-sus for next year. (First world problems: "OMG! What bike should I get?")

The one I rode was white and had bar-end shifters, which I didn't expect to like, but they're not so bad. I liked 'em better than the brifters on the All City Space Horse that I also tried out today. Either one is easier than the down-tube mounted shift levers on the last road bike I rode eons ago.

I was surprised at how light the steel frame was too. Light, but solid feeling. I pointed it right down a pretty busted up road and the bike seemed like it would just gobble up the miles smoothly.

Only thing I wasn't sure about was the Woodchipper bar. Very wide. Comfortable, but I think they look kinda goofy.

I'm totally infatuated with this bike right now, but the last thing I should do is spend 1500 or whatever on a new bike!
    The temptation... grrr.

Anyway, The Vaya. Nice bike. As I'm sure many of you know already. That is all.

I'm not really sure how much I built mine up for, but it was worth it. Over 2k miles on it this year. You should buy one.

That looks like a sweet ride. Is that a different fork? I'm seriously thinking about getting the Vaya instead of a newer mtb. Already setting aside some funds and selling some crap I don't need. Not sure if I should build one up from a frame or just go with the one I tried out. I don't know why exactly but I don't remember liking any other bike so much after only a test ride.

Yeah it's a Spot CX fork. One of the few disc forks out there with a straight steer tube. There are more pics in the Vaya thread.

Interested in this thread as I am trying to find a Vaya to test ride but I can't find one here in Aussie in South Australia - Volsung, some queries if you don't mind - why did you change the fork, and why did you choose the Spot CX and lastly, what benefits over the original does the Spot give you?
    Cheers from Aussie land !!!

It's well over a pound lighter which is good for hilly gravel rides. Slightly less rake which tightens up the steering and makes the bike feel faster. Still has fender mounts, but no rack mounts. I kept the steel for touring if I decide to go with racks instead of bags.

Also Spot is a super nice brand to deal with! I wish I could afford their bikes.

PS there's a lot more Vaya porn in the Vaya build thread. I totally trolled through it twice before buying my frame.

Thanks for that, Volsung, for my purposes I would want more rake giving a longer trail measurement hence a more relaxed ride and increased comfort - but I sure would go your way if I was thirty years younger ! Cheers
