    salsa juan solo, any good?

    bros,
I really dig my converted ss. but now its time to get a dedicated one. I saw the salsa juan solo looks pretty cool and will save me the hassle of building another bike..... the lbs wants 1800.00 for the whole bike.... specs:

what do you guys think?? could I build a lighter weight complete bike for the same price??? ( I want light weight effecient racer bike) my bike weighs 25.5 pounds now and has some decent parts but the wheels and frame are soon to need replacing...

That's quite a package! I have no clue about $ vlaues, so I can't comment on that.
The bike as spec'd is all good, no part I would dislike. Salsa is a kick-ass brand and I'd love to once try one of their frames. Despite the parts all being really good and cool, I'm not sure it'd be the most cost/weight effective. I MIGHT be able to spec a Surly Karate Monkey, 29" wheels, at a similar total weight, for the same price, despite the 3lb heavier frame and bigger wheels.
That said, 10.3kg is a very nice race bike weight, and with the disc and good parts, undoubtedly very efficient.
    Hmmm, a sub-10kg Karate Monkey, a nice spec'ing challenge!

are discs a must-have for your riding, or have V's always done the trick for you? In that case, the Avids may be over-bulky for your needs, and an unnecessary upgrade over simple V's.

Hope this helps, good luck making your choice!

According to the Salsa home page the listed MSRP for the frame alone is $756. You could try to spec one with the custom parts you want for around, give or take a couple hundred depending on your picks, that price ($1800). But as a package that sounds pretty nice.

With gears, and everything, my Mt Tam 29er weighed 25.5, converted to a singlespeed, it weighs 22.8 with a Thudbuster seatpost, Singulator, bell and computer.

My old converted Mongoose, steel frame and all weighed in at 21lbs. This was a 26" wheeled bike with a 5lb frame.
