    Carbon Fork for El Mariachi

I'd like to purchase a carbon fork for my salsa el mariachi have done a fair amount of searching and haven't found a satisfactory answer to my question yet.

Salsa's website lists a recommended 483-486mm fork length for a rigid fork on the El Mariachi. I have seen many pictures of people running the Niner carbon forks on the El Mar. The Niner forks are listed at a 470mm length. My understanding is running a shorter fork like the Niner would change the head tube angle on the bike by roughly 1/2 a degree.

Is running a 470mm fork really going to affect the bike's handling drastically or cause other problems by being 13-16mm shorter than Salsa's recommended length?

I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts on this. The fork that is currently on the bike is a Rock Shox Recon Gold air fork w/ 100mm travel.

I'm riding my 2012 Selma with a Whisky 7 CF fork. Geo on the Selma was same as the El Mar... Bike handles great and has good directional control. 480 A-C on this fork - your dealer should be able to source it through Q.

I just put a Niner on my El Mar SS. Really the only difference I can tell is the bar is lower, but that is because you can only have 40mm between stem and headset. The steel fork has more steerer tube length. One other thing, that carbon is an amplifier. Any movement in your hub, brakes, or brake lines and you will hear it.

I ran my 2011 El Mari with a Salsa Cromoto Grande, 468mm AC, and dug it, but I've now got a 100mm Reba on there and prefer the handling that way. Back then Salsa listed the geometry for both 80mm sagged and 100mm sagged suspension fork. 468mm or 470mm is essentially a sagged 80mm suspension fork. My 2015 El Mari has a Whisky #9 480mm AC (sagged 100mm). Same geometry 2011 vs. 2015, for the most part, just 44mm HT and shorter chainstays on the 2015.

Salsa Firestarter has similar AC to Whisky #9. I do like the Whisky #9 a lot.

    Good luck.

Yea, the carbon Firestarter fork you are referring to is the obvious answer but its $595.... I brought up the Niner because Jenson USA has them on sale for $249 right now. I appreciate the suggestion though.

Thanks for the info everyone. Looks like I should go for a 480mm A-C fork.
