Using XT cranks on 2016 RM Thunderbolt w/ stock bottom bracket

I have a hardtail that has my XT 2x cranks and a Thunderbolt that is all stock and was wondering if I can just swap out the cranks without changing the bottom brackets of the bikes. Can anyone confirm?

It depends which Thunderbolt, as the Race Face Next and Turbine cranks use a 30mm spindle, if it's one of the models with Shimano or the Race Face Aeffect cranks they use the 24mm spindle BB and you can swap them out for the XT.

If it's the Thunderbolt 710 with the FSA Gamma Drive cranks, you'd need to swap bottom brackets as those only have a 19mm spindle.

Crap, I have the 710 which has the Gamma drive cranks. I remember there was a product that converted press fit BB to threaded BB. Might that be the way to go or just change the current PFBB to a 24mm spindle?

Just change the BB to a Shimano or RF BB-92 press fit for a 24mm spindle. Both have decent reliability, the Shimano XT level BB-92 are not expensive.

If you're switching from the 3x drivetrain to the 2x XT drivetrain you'll also need to change your front derailleur to get it to mate with the 2x chainrings and likely the shifter, as I don't think the Deore level 10 speed shifter had the 2/3 selector on the underside of the shifter

2x10 XT E2 front derailleur with a big ring capacity of 38-40T and a 12T difference between small and big ring

XT front shifter for 2 or 3 speed (you can buy just the front shifter)
