We lost a great rider (car vs bike) .. car won

We have lost a great rider --
Posted 1 Minute Ago at 06:27 AM by PedalShop
l just found out today a rider bud of mine, team rider, (Aaron Ryan) lost his life, possibly due to a crash he had with a car while riding his fixie home from work. He was a team rider for Old Dominion Brewing Company and Pedal Shop ... has been for several years, dating back to at least 1997. He rode his fixie to and from work almost every day of the week... he totally loved riding his bike to work. He didn't need to ride his bike --- he owns a perfectly good -- new(ish) Subaru. After thinking about him... l'm honored but saddened to think it was me who turned him on to the fixie thing several years ago. He fell in love with it and he's also been an active XC rider too. l raced with him several times through the years.. l lost count how many times we did local/casual rides when we lived closer to each other. l don't know the full details yet but he had an encounter with an automobile about two weeks ago. (not the first time he got hit by a car while on a bike)... from what l hear, he didn't really get hurt and didn't see a doctor or anything. l also don't know who was at fault or even how bad the crash was. Fine one day -- started to feel like he may have had nerve damage so he went to see a doctor... left the doctor and suddenly died while at work on Friday. He was extremely fit so it's very shocking to hear about him passing on. Fit as in: e.g. we did a single speed stage race up in MD a few years back -- the bike race was at least 4 hours long, very grueling.. l was only rider support and l had a hard time finishing the ride. After getting back from the ride, he swam across Liberty Reservoir (must have been at least a mile swim, if not more). When he races, he always had very fast times -- he was no rookie rider. Now he's gone!!! leaving behind a beautiful wife and daughter . We're going to put together some sort of awareness ride in honor of Aaron. It's very soon after learning about Aaron so l'm blank at the moment but l'm open to ideas.

God bless you and your family Aaron.

    l will miss you.

    Love Mike

P.S... do they have bikes in heaven?

This wednesday is "ride of silence" across the country, there is a link in the threads somewhere. I'm gonna try to make the local one here, it would do all those like him an honor to attend.

Nobody is promised tomorrow. I am reminded of this everyday at work. But the tragedy of events like this never shrinks. Sad news.

That shot of Aaron in the middle where he's leaning over the bike --- that was moments after he got back from a lap out at a local race (Baker's Dozen). laps times for the team were l think around an hour 15ish that year.. whatever it was, Aaron was coming in like 15 minutes faster than everyone else on the team (and the team didn't have no slackers... pretty fast pace by all). the rider that was set to ride out after Aaron was: "Damn, he's back already?!?!?" caught off guard a little by Aaron's blistering speed.

Sorry for your loss. And this is bike to work week... the 3 ft message isnt being heard enough. Cyclist know the law, but it is failing to get across to some motorist.

Thanks for the contributions you have sent (you know who you are).

    Instead of a check ---
Right now, if you want, you can do a paypal to the shop: be sure to send it under "personal" that way paypal doesn't take the 3.8% off the top.

    info@pedalshop.com is the paypal address.

l'm not sure if Pavi has paypal but l will follow up shortly if she does.

Put the word out: anywhere, everywhere...

P.S. l also found out today, Pavi's expecting and 2nd child too ---- ug

This sucks...hopefully it was a legitimate accident and not a motorist trying to play cat and mouse. Drivers are taking crazy chances vs pedestrians, at least once a week while walking my dogs someone serves over, runs a stop sign and drives around me in traffic lanes, or my favorite; school moms in minivans blowing by me in a school crosswalk.

So far out of 3 years only one time has a cop seen this and stopped them. I have called about it, but dispatch seems to act like I am 'bothering' them.

My wife worries when I start riding again, just picked up a bike again yesterday.

On June 18th we will be having a memorial ride in honor of our friend Aaron Ryan.
He was a great friend, dedicated teammate of the ODBC / Pedal Shop Race Team, fellow WUSS and most importantly an amazing husband and father. June 17th would have been Aaron's 40th Birthday and June 19th he would have celebrated Father's Day with his daughter Natalie and expecting wife Pavi.
We will miss Aaron tremendously and want to use this day to ride with him in our hearts and minds and remember the great times we had, particularly on the bike whether in group rides or in competition.

We will also use this ride to help raise money for the Ryan Children's Scholarship Fund that has been set up to help his family. I'm thinking 40th birthday so $40 a person would be great to raise, but feel free to give more! I will take a collection and cut a check to the Scholarship fund after the event.

Going forward we will host an annual ride around this time to remember Aaron and raise money.
In addition, the Liberty Jamboree which will be held this year on July 23rd will donate all the money we raise to the Ryan Children's Scholarship Fund so spread the word and hopefully we'll have the biggest turnout ever.

It's still a shock that he is gone, and our hearts are still heavy, so hopefully this ride will help us heal and remember him and honor him on some trails that we spent years riding and racing on together. Whether you knew him well or just knew of him, we hope you'll join us.

    Ride Details:
Location: Wakefield Park (meet in the parking lot by the tennis courts)
    Date: June 18th, 2011
    Time: Wheels roll at 10:30AM
Level: Ride will be self paced group ride (but please limit any mechanical as it always drove Aaron nuts waiting on someone to fix their bike when he could be riding!)
Route: Will hit Wakefield and Accotink (expect 2-3 hours on the bike)
    Donation: $40
Post Ride: Bring PRB's and we will hit either Kilroy's or a local house (TBD) to drink some beers and tell some stories.

PLEASE FORWARD TO ANYONE WHO RIDES LIKE WE DO...
