    Noble Canyon Hooky Ride with VIDEO
    Pine Valley, CA. Wednesday May 18th, 2005. Temps were around 70 with a slight breeze. The eight of us took vacation so we could ride Noble Canyon during the week and not have to worry about having an Aquaholic sighting. ;)

    We met at the bike shop at 5:30 in the morning for the drive down from Orange County. It took us a little under 2 hours to make it down. Here Dan shows up ready to ride in style:

    <img src="http://www.fooriders.com/webmain/index.php?module=photoshare&func=viewimage&iid=888 5&viewkey=Jag.jpeg">

    From the upper trailhead you have a little bit of climbing to do, but once you reach this point:

    <img src="http://www.fooriders.com/webmain/index.php?module=photoshare&func=viewimage&iid=888 7&viewkey=Down.jpeg">

    It's time to lower the seat and enjoy the downhill:

    <img src="http://www.fooriders.com/webmain/index.php?module=photoshare&func=viewimage&iid=888 6&viewkey=Dan.jpeg">

    The terrain varies from fast smooth forest covered singletrack to sun soaked rocky descents. Eventually you cross a stream and arrive at this log jump play area. Here Crash Maxwell, with broken elbow on the mend, contemplates his next stunt. Lucky for us he decided not to do it:

    <img src="http://www.fooriders.com/webmain/index.php?module=photoshare&func=viewimage&iid=888 8&viewkey=No.jpeg">

    After the break, it is more fast descending under the cover of trees. Eventually you start to encounter rocky singletrack again:

    <img src="http://www.fooriders.com/webmain/index.php?module=photoshare&func=viewimage&iid=888 9&viewkey=Rocky.jpeg">

    Before you know it, we arrive at the "Stairway to Hell." I was able to clean the switchback and the stairway for the first time. Darin and Pat swore they would have cleaned the end of the stairway if it wasn't for me and my pesky camera:

    <img src="http://www.fooriders.com/webmain/index.php?module=photoshare&func=viewimage&iid=889 0&viewkey=Darin.jpeg">

    <img src="http://www.fooriders.com/webmain/index.php?module=photoshare&func=viewimage&iid=889 1&viewkey=Pat.jpeg">

    After stairway there is some climbing to do. A mile or so, then it is another fun descent down to the cars. It took us a little over 2 hours to make it from the upper trailhead to the bottom. The guys that had never ridden the trail before were impressed.

    Of course one of my favorite things after a Noble Canyon ride is getting a cheeseburger from Frosty:

    <img src="http://www.fooriders.com/webmain/index.php?module=photoshare&func=viewimage&iid=889 2&viewkey=Frosty.jpeg">

    If you are ever in the San Diego, CA area I highly recommend this ride. :D

    Mondo plays the lead role in this high speed affair, but watch for Dan to steal the show in the end.

    Nice set of vids there Winston. Any day at Noble is usually good, but a hooky day at Noble is extra good.

    wow. I'm impressed. I live in Spring Valley (about 4-5 towns away from Noble) and it takes me at least 40 minutes easy from home to Penny Pines parking lot.

    I just can't believe
    how not treacherous the Widowmaker and the Stairway look on film. Both of those sections are just ugly but they look "fairly" tame on video!

    the last 10 feet of the stairway seems to be the worst. if it's not a clean run right away, I'll either fock up right at the start or make it all the way to the bottom and have an issue at the end.

    how toasty was it for the last climb out? even in the middle of winter that climb seems to bake!

    I really like the 16:9 format
    I'm almost ready to debut a new helmet cam system. If you shoot in the 16:9 format how does it look when burned to a DVD and played on the TV? Does it appear in a "letterbox" format with black borders like movie rentals?

    Wherewolf - On a widescreen TV the video fills the entire screen. On a regular 4:3 TV the video is letterboxed.

    Yeti - The climb out was pleasant. There was even a slight breeze.

    Its a Sony DCR-HC30 MiniDV camcorder. I would think most of the recent MiniDV camcorders would have the 16:9 recording option.
