    wissahickon: good (freeride) friday ride

    hey yall!

so i am the proud new owner of a santacruz heckler with full super-sick shimano saint part kit.

it is more bike than i'll ever need, but so far in my limited testing, is sure is fun.

i am still semi-recovering from two severly dislocated fingers from a couple weeks back but am real eager to get out and put some miles on this bike.

so friday i propose a ride at wissahickon that basically involves finding fun stuff to ride and hitting it repeatedly. i still need to dial in the suspension and genearally get used to this bike (coming of a year plus on a rigid singlspeed). AND as of now i still can't really wrap my right hand around the bar, it probably wont be 100% by then either (but definitely good enough to ride around).

so basically this is an open invitation to meet up with me and whomever else shows up friday morning sometime and just go explore the wiss for some fun jumpsand sh!t. i know plenty of places already nd hope to find some more. pace will be casual and emphasis will be on having fun and nt riding fast or hard.

who's coming? meet at 10:30 friday @ valley green? dahoos, i am gonna try my best to force you to come along !

anyone else who might not be so quite into hucking stuff is also welcome (but be warned this will be slow and painful).

    Good job!

    Hey max,

congrats on the new rig. Im sure your gonna have a blast on it out at wissa. Yeah dahoos should definitely ride with you on friday. Sorry but Im out, I'd love to join you guys. I havent ridden for weeks. Work is dragging me thru the bottomless pits of hell at the moment. Hopefully we can catch up soon. If you can, take some pics of your new rig and yourself in action (you too Dahoos ).

    cheers electric

    Good job!

Wow! Last week on the posts. "I'm looking into getting a full suspension rig"
Today I read "I got a Heckler with Saint all around" !!! Nice man.

Glad to hear about your purchase. I was just thinking about where I was going to ride on Friday, and you made up my mind for me. I'm in. Now I guess the next question is do I use my clipless or put the platforms back on? With your hand and just getting used to the bike, and my lack of clipless experience it could be a sad looking ride.

I'll plan on 10:30 at Valley Green unless I hear otherwise. Look forward to it.

cool dahoos! i look foward to it. in an interesting twist by other buddy just got a specialized bighit so he'll be out there with us.

as far as clipless yeah i use them on this bike but really when your bike gets this big climbing is for suckers. i guarantee you wont have any trouble with whichever pedal you choose. i think i'd actually prefer flats but i have no clue how to use them so i'll stick with my clippies.

as for the bike... yeah i just stumbled into a deal i couldn't refuse.

lanceh - it is good friday, you still workin? if you want to do this on a weekend just post up! i live RIGHT there so i am good for a ride whenever basically... but probably not this weekend. friday i am cleared for this and either saturday or sunday i am headed to french creek. the other day i better spend with my lady or my new bike might start to cause some friction in our relationship

electirc - your physical condition sounds perfect for this ride! come with us.

    and now for some bike-porn!!!!

I know I forgot till the other day, that this Friday is Good Friday. I have off....but I guess not everyone does. Personally Sunday is no good for me, being Easter.
Sat. morn. would be do-able, but Friday is best.

Max, she is looking good! Can't wait to see it roll.

yeah, unfortunately good friday doesn't mean anything in my line of business so a work day it is. saturday morning will work for me as well but let me warn you that my geared bike is out for repairs so it will be my first wissahickon ride on a single speed which means quite a bit of hike-a-bike.

if you're anyone is interested in riding pick a time and a meeting place. i typically park on northwestern ave. and start out from there.

yeah so i think it is official... 10:30 at valley green be there or be square.

no one cares what you ride (or if your a big sissy afraid of jumping off big stuff like me) so long as your down with a slower ride with lots of stopping and repeating the fun sections...

my hand is still healing, so thats my excuse before we even start

    come on out!

Electric Mustard, if you can swing a half day, that would be sweet. Try to make it happen.

Just found out I have the day off! Sweet!

This is DEFINITELY sounding like my kinda ride...plus I've been wanting to ride the Wiss (never been there).

I'm unfamiliar w/ the area though, I'm coming from S. Jersey so I'm very close to the Walt/Benny. Can somebody give me detailed directions?...(exit # off Schuylkill, etc.) I'd like to meet up for the ride.

    Thx!

    Mark

BTW - Would knee/shin pads be a good idea?

    Mark. Real easy.

Take Walt Wit. 76 east to exit #338 Manayunk. I believe the exit is Belmont / Green Lane. Make a right at the bottom of the ramp. Onto Green Lane. Cross the bridge and go straight through the light and up the hill through Manayunk.
Continue till Green Lane ends at Ridge Ave.
Make a left onto Ridge ave and go a little over a block to Leverington.
Make a right on Leverington and take that till it ends at Henry Ave.
Make a left on to Henry Ave. and continue on Henry through a number of lights.
At the light at Wises Mill Rd. Make a right. Follow that down through the park, you'll make a sharp right over a bridge and down a hill to a gravel access road. Follow that till you get to the parking area.
Once in the parking area, follow the gravel access road on your bike in the same direction you were driving and Valley Green is the big building on the right. Can't miss it at all. We'll be out front of the building near the benches.

Hope to see you there. Bring the shin guards.....I always use em at the Wiss. Especially with platform pedals.

    Awesome! Thanks for the info!

I should be there by 10:30, unless there's a torrential downpour or something. If you see a guy in a silver Wrangler w/ a Red Haro FS on the back looking like he doesn't know where he's going...please flag me down.

I'll be looking for that blue Heckler.

Sorry, I didn't end up taking many pics. But I look forward to seeing how the other ones came out.

Max A Mill, maybe I'll see you Sat. at FC. I'm not sure I can make it, but I will certainly try.

Kramonut attached is the wiss map. The yellow is what we did on Friday. Gives you an idea of how much more is out there.

I got the map when I requested my Wiss park pass. I would make it bigger, but the attachment size is fairly limited on here. Although, I think you may be able to copy it to your desktop and should be able to zoom in using any graphic program.

As for Friday rides, I think I can speak for most of us and say the only reason we rode friday was because it was a holiday and we had / took off work. The weekends are always a go though....so keep an eye on the posts and it would be sweet to get more out.

Hey man thx for the map! Looks like there's still quite a bit out there to see.

Mind emailing me a copy of the map if you get a chance? I did save it to my desktop & tried to zoom in, but it's still not readable. [email protected]

    Thx!

here are the pictures i got.

my injured self was behind the camera and generally being a big baby while dave dahoos and mark showed off the skills.

right off the bat i find some field filled with obstacles to check out and dave hucks himself off the biggest wall there. right onto a flat thorn covered roll-out. NICE!!!

    then there was this wall.

dave making a STEEP descent look easy

dahoos showing off his log riding skills

don't forget when you order your trail pass, which i know everyone here has, you will get a nice fold out of wissahickon and pennypack. the wissahickon map does a good job of showing the mtb trails. the pennypack map does not.

Do you guys ever ride weekday evenings? Or Sat or Sun mornings? I've been riding the Wiss for 5 years now and looks like you guys know a pretty good freeride run. PM me if you arrange anything outside of the weekday 9-5...

myself and a group of friends have, for the last few years, done at least one regular weeknight ride, although we haven't settled on a day yet. the same group will also do a sunday 8am ride although i'll only go out this early if i have something to do later in the day.

we'll start at northwestern ave., ride one side of the park to lincoln ave and the other side back to northwestern ave. half of the riders race MASS. i say this not because anyone is a super strong elite rider but because it's not a take a lot of breaks or stop for a bunch of jumps and drops kind of ride. we go out, do our 16 miles, have some fun shooting the **** while riding and head out.

everyone is welcome to join us and i'll post back here when we settle on a weeknight.

With the days getting longer, anyone looking at doing an evening freeride around Wiss?

I dont have too much skills, but I like to huck off of stuff when I get a chance. I also have a PC101 vid camera, and a Digital Rebel with Kit lens- we could get some more shots.

    I ride a Iron Horse Chimp '05.

Max those are some great shots!
I can't wait to see Joe's vid of Dave washing out that first wall drop. I'll be playing that in slow mo over and over.

I usually ride somewhere every weekend, Wiss included. Used to ride the Wiss almost everyday in the evenings after work when I live in Manayunk. I miss that. ...tear.... anyway.... weekends are always good. And if a ride is scheduled for a weekday, I could plan accordingly and be down there by 6 ish. A lot of the time I go out solo, so I'm always looking for the opportunity to ride with a group.
