Tracy Ridge Trails (ANF) decision is in - bikes allowed!

Got the Decision Notice from Allegheny National Forest in the email just a little while ago.

Haven't read the entire thing end to end yet, but jumping to the 'Draft Decision' part I see that they apparently plan to open up the 12.5 miles of trail under consideration to mtb. One segment of trail, that is a 'dead end' of bike access trails, is only open under the condition that another trail section be built to create a loop of bike access trails.

Long story short - there will be around 10 miles of old school hiking trail opening to mtb. This area is immediately adjacent to a primitive campground, and within a short drive of the Rimrock-Morrison Trails (mtb allowed) as well as the mtb specific Trails at Jake's Rocks. So an area that not long ago had only the advanced Rimrock Morrison Trails will now have something approaching 30 miles of mtb trails!

Congrats to the locals, and many thanks to all that put in time and effort to get this to happen. Your neck of the woods is looking awfully good these days!

Bet FAW is riled up about this.

EDIT: The 'Response to Comments Received' section is a riot.

ANF is now at the 'objections' phase of the trail plan amendment that allows mtb on those trails at Tracy Ridge.

Ten objections were filed. One by FAW, as expected. And 8 by individuals, including that psycho Mike V*ndeman. I was unaware he was sticking his pointy crazy nose in this.

Best guess is that the deal is all but done, and the objections will amount to nothing.

This seriously annoyed me. I can't picture interfering with something on the opposite coast in a place I likely have never been.

I'm heading over to ANF this weekend to camp - might have to make it at Tracy Ridge and check out the trails.

I wonder if I'll see the slavering hordes of brutish mtbrs that FAW envisions.

No, the trails are not open yet. The period to submit appeals has closed but the Forest Service has not issued a response to the appeals.

It appears you are right. Despite the website indicating that the trails ARE open to mtb, the official process is not quite finished.

Thanks for bringing that info into the conversation. Don't want to start out by pissing off the backpackers.

So now the opening of Tracy Ridge area trails to mtb has been 'put on hold' by the ANF.

No real reason that I know of, no time line, no plan. To me it seems like we went through this whole incredible dog & pony show, it came out in mtb favor - and it's being rejected anyways.

I must admit that this makes me angry. Anyone with some further insight?
