    Swim/MTB around Scranton

I am looking for a place to do some open water swimming and then ride, within an hour or so of Scranton. The riding doesn't have to be technical, in fact I would prefer it not be, but I want a decent climb. I don't want a paved road ride, but dirt is fine.

The two places I have come up with are Merli Sarnoski and Hickory Run.

I can get a 4-500 foot climb on the dirt roads at Hickory run, which would be good. I have swam there before, the water is usually chilly, which is also good.

I have only ridden at Merli once, and it was at least 5 years ago. How technical is the orange trail? From memory, I don't recall it being technical. What kind of vertical is there? From the map, it looks like there are several climbs that are in the 200-300 foot range, but it's tough to tell. How about the beach and swimming? I am planning on doing this on Labor Day. Not sure how popular it is for swimming.

Also, am I overlooking somewhere else?

    Any input is appreciated.

    Dan

Check out Prompton State Park? Trails are pretty technical and rocky though. I believe there is a lake there, not sure if it is good for swimming.

Thanks. No swimming allowed in the lake at Prompton, unfortunately.

Merli is technical and the swimming area is relatively small and just a place for the kids to splash and scream. Though the climbing won't let you down either. Ttyl, Fahn

Francis Slocum SP. But again, just a little cordoned off swimming area. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by 'open water,' but I've never heard of a state park in PA where the entire lake could be legally swam.

jonz, you are correct, none of the state parks let you swim across the entire lake. The last time I was at Hickory Run, I could swim about 300 yards in a loop, sticking to the outside of the swim area. That's what I'm looking for. If I have to go there, that's fine, but I was looking for something a little closer. That works out well bike wise, I have a rigid bike, so I don't want technical.

No swimming at Frances Slocum in the lake, just in the pool.

I think I am just going to go to Hickory Run. I would like to try somewhere new, but I want to get in a decent climb right after swimming (thinking of doing XTERRA ASP) and don't want to have to figure out where trails are, etc. Promised Land was another spot, but it seems the climbs are not that big.

Locust lake would be a good one too. Good climb and mix of fire road and technical single track

I didn't realize there was any place to ride at Locust Lake. That might work even better, that is on my way home. Thanks.
