RR: Rothrock SF - Tussey Mtn. & Cooper's Gap

I was back in my hometown of Allentown for the first time in 4 years over the 4th of July and had all day Saturday to ride. I made the trek up to Rothrock SF for the first time and with the help of the LBS I had two routes for the day. It was an absolutely gorgeous day, low 70's, sunny & little humidity. Not exactly the mid-July PA I recall growing up, but I took it. The overload of greenery was welcomed change from my typical arid Sonoran desert found in Arizona. The two places couldn't be more different, yet both are loaded with rocks and I love rocks!! I had a blast checking out as much of the area as I could before the rental bike was due back. I'll be back to central PA for more riding, that's for sure.

Really nice. I really miss PA, the greenery, rocks and the 70 degree temps!

Either section of the Trailmix route is a great ride, but I must admit I'm partial to the eastern half running over Tussey ridge.

Still, the downhill after the fire tower on the western half is good fun too.

Haven't succeeded on Coopers Gap ride yet, rained out (t-storm) on 2 of 2 attempts. Ugh. Maybe one day.

Thanks for the writeup and pics.

Huge expanse of rides in Rothrock SF. Lots of rocks. I did most of mine on rigid Cannondales!

Just spent a week in happy valley. I rode through a few late summer thunderstorms to get my daily ride in. I do a road and woods loop that I ride from town. I climb out of Pine Grove Mills and head east on Kepler Road, a stone road that runs along the north face of a mountain ridge parallel to Mid-State Trail. Then I descend out of Rothrock to Pa Furnace and loop back to town along the rural tarmac with twists and climbs (Marengo to Tadpole to Whitehall Roads).

I noticed more people seem to be cycling in this area than, say, 10-years ago. Nice to see.

Next time I ride in the area I'm staying for an entire weekend so I don't have to cut my ride short due to returning a rental bike on time. I imagine this area is fantastic during the fall colors. We only get pockets of that out in AZ.

Luckily a Klein waits for me to fly in and ride the area. I spent another part of the week riding in the mountains north of Howard/Bald Eagle Lake, which is about 30 minutes east of State College. It is too wild for off-road trails but I love riding the windy, hilly dirt, stone and (mostly) asphalt roads that snake around the mountains and stream valleys. The gurgling, spring fed streams are great for filling up the water bladder with very cold water on a hot summer day.
