New question here. Rent and ride near PGH?

    Hi folks,
I'm planned to be in Pittsburgh first week of April.
Could someone recomend a place where I can rent a decent MTB, plus a trail which is easy to get to, preferably within not more than an 40 minutes drive from the city / rental place?

    TnX!

I have no idea about renting- maybe call a couple local bike shops and see if they will lend you one?

As for trails, North Park is about 30 min north of Pittsburgh, and has some nice XC. Kinda muddy at this time of year but you may enjoy it. Frick Park, which is like 3 min away from where Dirt Rag Magazine is published, also has some good riding. Warning though, it is technical, and it is up/down.

    Check the trails here:

i just searched yellowpages.com for bike shops and found this. http://www.bikepittsburgh.com/

boyce park isnt far from pittsburgh. there are lots of trails there, mostly tight singletrack, nothing extreme.

    TnX for the trails!

    Thanks to both of you!
The shop, however, seems a bit lame...

Or maybe I'm just spoiled, used to my Jamis???

I dont know anywhere you could rent but check bike shops, gatto , dirtyharrys and schools are all good places. Ride at northpark, hartwood acres, seven spring if you can, sewickley heights park. There are endless riding possibilites. HOpe the trip goes well

Yeah, that shop is down by the Point (where the 3 rivers come together)...they rent great bikes for the railtrails, nothing more.

    Like I said,
    http://www.schollsbikes.com/
http://dirtyharrys.net/index.cfm both might be able to do something for you.

    Finally,
check the rentals listed on this site...not sure if they would rent mountain bikes, but you could sure check:

try dirtyharrys. They lend my uncle bikes when he comes in from CA but maybe thats cause he knows barry (he owns dirtyharrys) but try them anyway. Great staff and a great showroom.

7 Springs has rental bikes. Kona Blasts, Trek 4500's and Kona Kikapu's. Bad news is we don't have the bike shop open until mid-late April.

    Dirty Harry's

    Hi,
It probably is connected to the fact he knows Barry, as they told me they don't do rentals...

    TnX anyway!

    Maybe

Maybe try ambridge bike shop, its like 40 mins north of pittsburgh, the phone number is 724-266-1111, also how big are you, i may have a buddy that is your size who hasn't rode his bike in about 2 years, if i talked to him and it fit you, he may let you ride it, it wouldn't be a great bike, but better than nothing, shoot me an email, [email protected] if you do finally find something i'd be more than happy to ride with you at north park, hartwood acres, sewickley heights (aka lots o horses), let me know man

    Ranshe,

I do not know of any bike shops in Pgh that rent mtb bikes but you could check with some of the shops people list below, Dirty Harry's, Gatto's or Scholls.

However, Speedgoat has demo bikes available and some sweet rocky trails five minutes down the road from them. The only bad part is that to the shop is approximately 1 hour East from Pgh, but the trails and demo selection are well worth the drive.
