Join Friends of the Cresheim Trail this Saturday, May 29 at 9 am as we finish work on the Grotto Loop, near the SEPTA Bridge, off of Creshiem Valley Drive. Weve got a number of things to do to complete the trail, including completing the rock causeway down to the SEPTA bridge, installing some technical features on the downhill portion leading to it, tuning the huck-to-flat jump up top to improve its ride ability and building a tabletop feature and other minor maintenance. As always, Snacks, tools, and food are provided. We'll be working near the SEPTA bridge. The following link shows parking and work locations.
Bring your bike to test the trail after the work is done!

There are tons of activities on tap for Love your Park week, starting with Alpe d'Jawn at the Belmont Plateau this evening at 6:30, trail days at Belmont, Philly Pump Track and Wiss on Saturday Morning and PumpJam & swap meet at the Philly Pumptrack, Saturday afternoon. Lots of news too: Philly Pumptrack won their grant, the first round of vendors and activities have been announced for the Philly MTB Phestival and the Summit Avenue bypass at the Wiss has been given the green light, with the possibility of a Mountain bike only spur!

Double thumbs up on a summit bypass as well as a MTB only trail. That is great news. Hopefully the water department doesn't shut them down a week after they are complete.

National Trails Day and Belmont Point To Point and Parks On Tap Happy Hour

There are lots of activities in the coming week, first up on June 1, Belmont Point To Point and the Parks On Tap afterwards: There will be a special 5-mile course at the Belmont Plateau and allegedly, the Lone Wold Cycling guys have some shenanigans in store, perhaps topping the chicken hunt from last year. Afterwards, the Parks On Tap across from the Belmont Mansion will host a special Happy Hour from 7-9, donating 50% of the proceeds to the Belmont Plateau Trails Alliance. Last year, they donated nearly $5,000, which helped pay for trails upkeep and new trails in the park.

Saturday, June 3rd is National Trails Day and to celebrate, the Friends of the Wissahickon are braking ground on the long awaited Summit Rd Bypass! The new trail will reroute the Yellow Trail off of Summit Avenue and bypass the road section leading from the park, back to the Yellow Trail, connecting with Wise Mill Rd. The work days will continue on Saturdays in June, until the project is completed. This trail is being built by the #TrailWizards who built the Cresheim and Crossbow Trails, with design input from two professional trail builders Steve Thomas and Val Naylor, as well as Friends of the Wissahickion staff, FOW Volunteer Crew Leaders and MTBPHL #TrailWizards.

    Summit AV Reroute!

    2017 MTBPHL trail days-%40%40%40errday.jpg
We had over 40 volunteers from the mountain biking, hiking and equestrian communities come out on saturday to break ground on the Summit Bypass trail. We were able to rough in about a half mile of trail, about 1/3 of the main route. we took a mid morning break and gave a small tour of the proposed bike spur that, if approved, will include tabletop jumps, berms, a drop and possibly a rock garden and bowl.

afterwards, OldManBike grabbed his bike and sessioned a logover on the trail:

we will be meeting every Saturday in June to build the trail; this Saturday, we will again meet on the Yellow Trail down from Summit Av and Old Line Road at 9 am to continue the work and will likely keep going until mid afternoon. Thanks to everyone who came out!

that is a great action shot! that is a BIG log at that spot (pics don't do it justice).

i brought the kids out for a few hours saturday and we all had a great time. it has been a while and i totally forgot how well they treat volunteers at these things... pizza, snacks (even a T-shirt this time)... good conversation with folks you would probably never meet who work very hard to keep the place nice. my kids were bugging me as soon as we got home to see if we could go back next week. FOW really does a great job making the volunteers feel welcome!

so come out; bring the kids... it is a really great feeling giving a little back and working on new trails.

thanks to everyone who makes this happen!

it always blows me away how quickly a trail goes from nothing but an idea and a few flags in the woods to a rideable line. if you have never seen the process before you should totally come out at least once!

Join us this Saturday, June 17 at 9 am, as we continue work on the Summit Reroute with Friends of the Wissahickon, building a new trail that will reroute the Yellow Trail off of Summit Avenue and bypass the road section leading from the park, back to the Yellow Trail, connecting with Wise Mill Rd. The work days will continue on Saturdays in June though July, until the project is completed. The photo above shows the path the trail will take. Weve currently got a rough cut of the trail from the Summit Av Gravel Ascent, going south to the creek crossing. From there, the trail temporarily joins the community trail, connecting to the yellow trail just south of the Summit Av pavement trailhead and while not completed, is effectively open for traffic. This Saturday, we hope to tune the trail tread for the rough cut section, armor several turns to prevent short cutting and erosion, install rock features and if we have enough time and volunteers, perhaps begin building a stone causeway at the creek crossing. If you have any questions, leave a comment here or contact Peg Shaw the FOW project manager. Further details on work days will be posted at FOW.org and at MTBPHL.org.

Gloves, tools, water and light snacks will be provided, Long pants, shirts and insect repellent are recommended, as there is poison ivy & thorns in the forest, and this is a particularly severe season for ticks and tick borne illness. a google maps link to the worksite, with locations for parking is here: goo.gl/4eRXT2 There is a chance of rain in the forecast and in the event of heavy precipitation, the trail day may be cancelled.
