Are you guys elitist hipsters too?

I plan on getting back into riding after recovering from being injured.
Been many years since I was active.

I found another forum a bike forum...not to name names...lol

I was kinda shocked to see the elitism and hipsterness in full blown fashion. Is every biker a total douchebag nowdays? Am I better off being a lonewolf like in the book Bike snob?

I have my 96 Gt karakorum still. Last bike I bought before I built a new house and got married and hung it up in the garage. Its still almost a virgin.

All this serperation of car drivers/ bike riders and elitism....over bicycles...really? WTF.

Tell me its not so with the mountain biking crowd. Tell me it's just the road guys....that you guys are cool and it will be ok. That you think my toyota 4x4 is cool .

Im prepared just to lurk and keep my mouth shut if thats the community here. I want to be involved like I am with my toyota hobby. But Ill be damned if Ill contribute on a forum full of douchebags that think they are better than everyone else....just because they ride a bike.

Give it to me straight guys. Tell me Im home now or to GTFO.

    Dave

Toyota 4x4, ugh. You need to get a beemer.

Mountain bikers are well known to be elitist hipsters. It is us who the roadie pretender hipsters are trying to emulate. What a bunch of posers!

as long as you dont have an opinion here you'll be ok.
try and stay clear of anything too left or right wing cause you'll get called a nazi or a hippy for having a different opinion that someone else who is obviously better than you doesn't agree with.

    sorry just kidding

What is an elitist hipster? I don't wear my sisters skinny jeans. 50 is in my rear view mirror. My garage is so full of bikes that I can't fit my 99 corolla in there. I do have to deal with Ma$$hole drivers on my bike commute though. I do not however drink PBR's or smoke.

If you can manage to be insulted by a bike forum, you don't belong on the internet. We all have opinions and attitudes. I don't care if you don't have an opinion or attitude, but if you can't handle the attitudes of others, piss off and grow some skin.
Sometimes, I question the value of my content.

Let's see... if I were to walk up to you and ask "are you a turd-gurgling scumbag bootlicker too?" would you say "no, thanks for asking" or "go f*** yourself"?

So maybe now you can see why you are getting a hostile response.

(peaks out of scenic woodlands with moon in the background, you are not sure if it is real...or a velvet painting at the flea market)

At least you guys are funny. Ill stick around. I just let the bike Nazis rub my nerves on the other forum today. I went half retard and got banned.
    (never go full retard)

I got smoked by a car on a Roadking about 10 years ago and it took out a couple disc and a vertabrea. Ive since ruptured 4-5 more disc in back and neck at work (I own a cutsom tile shower business) So I have been pretty gimped up and home since May. I was thinking dusting off the bike would help with some core strength when/if I get a this dealt with. I might have to get surgery again.

Thats why Im here. I want to get the GT roadworthy...was like new when I put it up, It replaced a trek I snapped the frame on.

Im a mountain bike guy. But not some elitist hipster. Cant stand em.
Was just prodding to see if anyone had a sense of humor anymore.

    Here she is....

I wasn't aware that hipsters rode mountain bikes. Too few opportunities for display. Eventually you have to hit the trail. I rode 18 miles of single track here in central Louisiana today and didn't see a soul. Not so much as a hiker.

Seriously, I've see hipsters before but never on the trail.

Are you the obvious patrol or did you not read the thread?

To be honest (which I am as well as handsome) I never outskilled the bike back then, so I doubt 30 lbs, grey hair, and not riding for many years have sharpened my skills alot. Im lucky to get in my 4runner right now.

Lets see your bike there hotdog....I bet mine is like twice as cool just because its a virgin still. Yours is probably a clapped out whore.
You should post a pic...of it all leaned up in a scenic background with lighting and stuff.

If I can reasonably recover...and get my riding legs back...a new bike is def in the future. Hell...I need 6 months to catch upthe tech on these space bikes you guys ride now. Suprised they dont have abs and airbags.

It will always be a hardtail though. I aint no sissy. Going from 40mm to 100mm travel sounds kinda cool though.

dude, this forum is full of smartassery, if anything else. Come in with any kind of expectations or stereotypes, and folks will gladly conform for you to create a comedic spectacle for the rest of us.

I know a few hipsters who ride mountain bikes...but they're not the worst of the hipster crowd with the pretentiousness. They just look funny, mostly.

Read up a bit, and you'll get a feel for the place. There are a few parts of the forum where the atmosphere is definitely different than other parts.

Most of the technical forums are pretty matter-of-fact. In Off Camber, don't take ANYTHING seriously. There's almost always a double meaning or sarcasm somewhere. The 29er forum is where all the people with inferiority complexes hang out, and they try to cover it up with their bigger wheels, which are "obviously" better than yours. The 29er Components forum is where you go to ask about 29er specific components like pedals and grips and saddles.

There are some other gems in here, but I'll let you discover them yourself.

Elitist was when on the other site when they argued with me then attacked cause I said it was stupid to run a red light on a bike. They actually think they have the right to do it.
Whatever. I'd try and stop if someone got in front of me...but Id beat there ass if it they make me hit them out of smug stupidity. Bikes scratch cars all up. Might even pop a tire....lol

That is not elitist. In Idaho, traffic laws permit cyclists to treat red lights as yield signs. It does not mean they can blow through with cross traffic, but it means they can cross on red if there is no cross traffic.

The law makes sense in light of the fact that many lights on sensors will not trip for bicycles. Especially carbon ones with very little metal. Stop at the wrong light with very little auto traffic and you could be sitting there for hours. Folks in many other states like that law and choose to treat red lights that way.

There is a crowd who just runs red lights without even slowing or looking. Those riders are the idiots.

I know that, not the Idaho thing...but who lives there anyways? There is like 3 people in Idaho. I was just poking them a little and they went crazy. They were serious.

Believe me..I mean no one harm. I just like to make myself chuckle here once in awhile. I thought someone would think the spacebike thing was funny at least.

My toyota site Im on is like PG13 pretty much and we all behave just fine. So this may be me sewing (same sewing?) my oats a little.

You guys all have such cool bikes and Im evendentally owner of a model T.
I kinda thought the old GT's were still cool. Now the cool bikes look like girls bikes.
I supose that saves the nads though. Is riding a full suspension bike like one of these kinda?

You don't have to repeat yourself in the same post! I am fairly certain we all get what you're trying to say. Your ignorance is shining through big time. To dis full suspension without ever ridden one, to stand behind a nearly 20 year old bike that was barely adequate in it's day, ***** about people on this forum in your first post, just tells everyone here that all you know about bikes is that they have two wheels. Go get yourself a new ride, roll it a 1000 miles or so then come back. Maybe at that time you can contribute something useful to the boards.

I aint crashing and burning anywhere. If you cant find the inchworm funny as a comparison to a FSB, then you have lost your sense of humor. You didnt have to post in this thread. You just wanted my attention. You are right. I dont know shit yet...but I will. Im a great wrench. Great welder. Funny. I said handsome right? Ill get settled in here just fine. I come through the door loud and boisterous and everyone knows Im here.

Im not a quiet meek word sniping trollster.

Im pretty jazzed about learning what kind of bike Ill settle on. Im really not sure yet.
With the condition of my back...alot of people are PM'ing me and say to go ful suspension. Im still learning the ups and downs of each.

When I rode last...Full suspensions were around but not many people rolled them. pretty rare. Hardtails were the thing. I have never touched a FSB. The 29'r look good to me...not only looks but approach angle...traction. Its the handling that concerns me. The 26's are more nimble so I have heard. I like to jump. That GT has been 8ft in the air. (wont lie, I about crapped)

The downhill stuff is way faster than we rode. I see the full suspension shine there .

For all I know I may get a 3 level fusion and get stuck on a comfort bike if that.

Ill settle down. Im the nervous new kid cracking jokes.

Im not riding anything atm. The couch. I got some air on the inversion table. Almost did a back flip. Im working on it.
I got Doctors and Lawyers fighting over how to fix me. It will be figured out soon. I might get lucky and some cortisone shots and a pain block or something.
MRI's are nastry though and I have one more to get. I probably have the rare and elusive ruptured thorassic disc. They take out ribs and flatten a lung for a little while to fix that baby. Last thing on earth I want. But contant terrible pain sucks ass. Eventually you will do anything to make it stop.

So, I guess because the couch is all you ride, you decided to start $h!t here out of pure boredom. You neither have the ability nor the equipment to ride a bike so I have an idea. Grab your GT, strap it to your 4x4 and head over to your local trailhead and pose. While there, start your "are you all elitist" BS with the guys there and get their opinions, then let us know how it went.

Wow. Aren't you guys orginized at all? A repeated attack could crack me. It's like the last days when the russians took berlin. You are sending boys and old men to grapple with me?

I actually have thought about scouting some of the new trails. We have a ton of new ones around here now. Last one I rode was Chub trail out by lone elk park.
Was a brutal ride. We went backwards and climbed for miles it seemed. It started pouring rain and I was cut up by then. We decided to roll the shoulder of the highway back...up hwy 44 on a hill I call antire hill of death. It was freaking up hill..super steep grade..for miles. I have no idea to this day how it was uphill both ways but it was. We did get a killer ride down froom the beginning or end we started at. I hurt for days after that.

Which Toyota shall I strap the GT to? I could go...like super hipster with the Trekker. Its not really roadworthy till the floorpans get put in. Its been up and down the street though! I could do the 87 4runner. Thats medium hipster. Its too shiny perhaps. The 99 4runner I could slip in Soccer mom style. But its full of german shepherd hair and dog toys. Tags on my Tacoma are up and I need to do the rear o2 sensor, but I cant get under the truck and the trekker is in the garage. I dont think my wife has thepoop to break the o2 sensor nuts loose, and they are always rusty. Remind me to ask one of my freinds tomorrow.
The wifes 4runner. She wont let me near it. It's a source of perpetual *****ing, so I leave it alone. I used to get to change theoil though. I am not to take off or install any parts on her car I promised. None are worth enough to be like rich hipster. Maybe the wifes but its a few years old and I cant driveit anyways. (This all stems from the I wrecked the Eclipse the first time we went camping together cause I accidentally drank a 1/5 of jack, and they moved the campground entrance while we drove home from a 2 am everybody lets go get breakfast run.)

You let me know. Ill tig weld up myself an artificial spine tonigt so I can even make a lap.

You havent knives sharp enough to cut through old man troll skin.

But for realz. Ill ride. I went through a back surgery 10 years ago. Building core strength was a key to my recovery then. I know biking is better than running for your back. Im by no means some weak old man. Im strong. Big legs. Good heart. Just took advantage of my back and forgot to treat it good, When I got hurt...I had been working 17 days straight to finish a house for a customer who needed to move in on a certain date. I had 400-500 pounds come down on me and squish me.

All right enough medication induced babbling. Have some donuts for me in the morning. And I take my coffe black.

oh...as far as seeing what guys would say. I know its ethug and all...but honestly...people dont get smacky with me in person often. I dont go around all bully bully., but I am a formidible presence. Wounded or not. But they would most likely make freinds real quick, cause I am fairly funny.

Highlux... I sent some positive rep your way. Worth it because you can take some ribbing and keep on going. Realize there are those here that think you need the latest and best equipment to ride. However there are plenty others than believe the bike is merely tool and it is skilled craftsman (rider) that makes the difference.

In the years since 96 alot has changed, but not alot has changed either. Bikes have more travel slacker and geometry, but still need to be pedaled. The market has gotten more segmented, but despite what most people aspire to ride like, most guys ride the same stuff as back then. A few ride some really crazy stuff, but it has always been like that. Some will always say you NEED a this part or that part on your bike to be able to ride XX trail. Don't listen to that. Just ride and make you own decisions.

The one thing that will get you in trouble here is to over talk your riding skills. If your skills need work or you need to develop fitness don't try to say that you don't. Just accept it and work on that stuff.

Highlux if you can ride your GT well and have fun doing it, keep doing it. Dont let to anyone tell you different (from what ive read im sure you wont). Good riders on an old dated bike get more cred than sh1te riders on $5k bikes in my book. I have no doubt that the latter have posted here already.

Thats not the Toyota. When someone not worthy drives one. It is programmed to kill them. It has been dishonored by the human who sat it in. Since they are Japanese...they have no choice put to head off a cliff.

IME i have just as much fun and get just as much exercise whether riding my 1989 canti brake 26" rigid, as my newer 29" disc brake fs ride, and on everything in between.
Now to share one of my favorite things in the cycling world that many of you have experienced and may have heard me share already....I just love it when a guy shows up on a beat up old clunker and all the guys with their shine new bikes and just as shiny color coordinated clothes have something to say, either in front of or behind his back. Then they just can't hang or keep up and the inevitable, oh my shocks are wrong for these trails, or my psi or nutrition is off today. It's just the best, makes me laugh, and is such a clear marker for how personal responsibility and accountability is vanishing from society. Hence the douchbagery found on forums where you can front and lie and be a legend in your own mind without the humdrum of reality.
There's certainly some enjoyable, colorful, helpful, and informative personalities around here, then again there's some that're certainly and as should be expected in this world not. So far it seems you will add to this sites enjoyment, welcome aboard.

I still hate everyone on the trail but me. This discussion has not changed that fact.

Highlux. How do you feel about a diesel FJ Cruiser to replace your junk box 4Runner (that probably has bogan ARB all over it)? MetalTech FJs all the way.

Also. Serious note. You'll want to get something the absorbs trail chatter for the back. Suggest start with short walks, then stationary bike, then some rail trail if you have access, then mtb trails, then whistler double black diamonds (park & valley). This worked for a loved one who spent 21 days in an ICU.

On a serious note and I'm not being elitist or judging your fork, only trying to help a fellow mtbr.
After so many years those elastomers that are most likely in your fork are done. Even if un-used they either get hard or turn to moosh over time. Check 'em out, maybe coil springs in that fork? With 1-1/8" headset, that it appears you have but don't take my word for it, you have many options, including rigid. You can find newly made elastomers here suspensionforkparts - Home , as well as parts diagrams, only use synthetic grease on these.. Or maybe replace them with spring or air conversion for your weight if you can still find em.
Same thing with old brake pads. Even if you think the pads seem ok get a new set and you'll see immediately results. Kool Stop International - High Performance Bicycle Brake Pads Since 1977 is a good choice and pretty easy to find.

Nope. They love me there. I try and help diagnose issues and offer repair advice. I have the Trekker build underway so thats a big draw. They are really really rare.
My 87 is built to the hilt for a 22re truck, head, cam. etc...but no arb crap. I dont bash my stuff up. I like clean mechanical devices. like clockwork clean.

Fork is 1 1/8 threadless...I need to take the forks apart to clean and grease. Measure the doodles. 6" is spec. If they have shrunk much they are toast. I have the Rock Shok Quadra 21r and I found the manual online!! A youtube rebuild as well. I can go up to 80-100mm with a newr for...but make sure i get one with canti brakes. Im gonna keep her as is...but dissassemble everything and clean. Tune. When my bike tools show up Ill get to it. Ordered a little cheapie kit for now. But I have my eyes on a Park tool kit. I love tools.

My only real question at all has been about the bb. Its sealed so...I wonder about the old grease. I cant get the original un51 anymore so I have to do a diff one or just run this one and see....or I have been thinking maybe...inject some new grease in the sealed unit with a hypo or something. I have some good literature on bike repair stuff thanks to torrents...cough cough.

Replacement for that bb is cheap. UN51 if I am not mistaken is a cartridge type and you cannot grease it. Just pick up a new one. When you remove the current one, it will say whether it's 68 or 73mm, I think 68 in your case.

On my '96 Jamis that has many miles and has been bb submerged a few times still has original bb running fine. The aluminum crank to square spindle is the weak link here.
On that same Jamis I went up to 100mm travel and after months still didn't like it enough that I went back to 80mm. Your bike's geo is not identical and of coarse ymmv.

Repack INVENTED mountain biking for crisake, you ungrateful punks. Hippies don't ride bikes with fixed gears, especially off road. Hippies drink microbrew and look down on PBR. Hippies revere their predecessors, the Beatnicks.
But both hippies and hipsters, I believe crave Delta 9. We hippies owe props to the Gen X and millennials for breeding weed with Delta 9 THC.

Okay I was kidding about the roadies getting hit by cars.
I also ride road, but not as much as MTB. I was trying to make a joke (this is a mountain bike forum site by the way.)

Been scrambling all day. One of my yotatech buddies is coming up to my area for National Guard weekend and is goint to swap my transmission and transfercase in my 87 4runner for me tomorrow. It has a light input shaft bearing growl that is driving me nuts. Trying to line up a helper for him. I am a tool ***** on this one at best.

Ill take my back meds in an hour or two and be back to entertain, Im sure. Im glad you guys accepted me. (not that i matters *****es!!...lol kidding) Was like getting jumped in by a gang there for a minute.

Didnt get to piddle with the bike today.

You might wanna look into what mm of fork travel your specific bike is designed for.
In that era of bike building think most were designed for around 60mm. In the years to follow 80mm became the norm and many went up to 80mm on their 60mm frames without much downside, but go to 100mm and the bad might out weight the good.
Now some opinion. For the riding you describe and the frame you have I'd sooner put a rigid fork on it for more bike. Especially if you're a bigger guy, don't have lock-out, and don't have the fork tuned for that weight since most forks are made for 160-170 pound riders. This is coming from someone who cares not what others think of my bike and weights 165. If you want a 100mm travel bike then get one.

I have to tear them down to clean/inspect still. I might be able to tomorrow. I got some Toyota peeps headed over this afternoon to gangbang a trans/tranfer case install on my 87 4runner. Im too gimped to do it and they wanted to help. So Im trying to get the garage ready.

Im going to keep this fork on her. The more I think about it...the more I want to preserve her in her unmolested state. Other than a small tear on back off seat from a wreck...she's nearly perfect.

Well then you can get new elastomers and be done. Don't get old stock, you want new. You can also order/adjust to your weight at the link I posted above, which do tend to run stiffer than what's claimed and think most if not all of any bad reviews are because of this.
Don't use petroleum products on elastomers.
While I'd sonner leave the bb alone and only change/inspect if needed, I'd change the elastomers since they're nearly 20yo, especially if I'm taking it apart.

I agree, change the elastomers and be done...keep as original as possible. Ride it while trying to decide what 21st century ride to upgrade to.

Also, glad your choice of words regarding your transmission were what they were. Don't know where this thread would have gone if you said you were gang banging a tranny...

Think twice about not riding full sus. Much better if you have back issues. My 29er with 150mm of travel takes the sting out of 6 hours of rocky trails.

Yes a 150mm FS make sense, but 100mm? No! If you want a basic low travel FS, buy a long travel Hardtail.

Wow that could have been a hard to recover from self landmine if I had said that. Im trying to come up with some snappy clever comeback. But you guys are all being totally cool now, so I dont have it in me to be mean.

21st century! She was a bike of the year man! I was pretty pimp in the day on her. It's a no brainer since Im back thinking bike, I will add multiples to the collection. If you knew me...you would be safe to bet I'll end up with dozens of various bikes. Being able to paint hvlp....cleaning up and painting a few bikes sounds really cool. How easy a bike is compared to trans rebuilds or a headgasket job on a car. I love tinkering with stuff. I got 600 billion bike book pdf's to read. From frame building to wheel building. The wheel stuff is really actually going to be invaluable when I replace rims on my Old Yamaha death machine. Isnt it in one of the pics? It has some pitting on the rims and I want to do some black rims on it.

I have to get a couple parts for runner in the morning then the trans goes back in. My boy From Anderson Mo came up and pulled the old one out. One of the coolest guys I ever met. It was really hard not being able to get under there and help. I was a good tool boy though. I had everything set up for him. Compressor fired up, Impact gun ready....common size toyota stuff on the tool cart. Gloves and hand cleaner. Weird feeling having another man wrench on you 4runner. Like I was watching him bang my wife cause I couldnt. lol

I really like 29'r. Alot. I hear the handling is worse...but I dont know if would make a dif with my skill level. I dont think I can ride fast enough for it to matter. I have learned alot from some videos regarding technique...granted I need to commit that to muscle memory with practice. I know about threshold braking and loading the suspension to dig in. I really learned that clip ins are going to help in jumps and hopping stuff. About digging in a corner with foot on outer pedal and down. Drops. A huge weakness for me. I was the guy flying over the handle bars. Looking through the drop...sitting back..setting up before the drop. Cant wait to try all this stuff. I always had the balls....just not the techniques. I think when I am able...Im going to really step up the quality of my rides.

Night kids. There will be some bike work going on Sat for sure. Are the build threads? Should I start one...or you say I just keep this as my thread?

Man that's alot of words to simply say you're an old fart, or it seems Dodgy Geezer is more appropriate in this case.

Not wanting to gross anyone out I'll just say that "theMeat" was donned me by the ladies, and no I'm not overweight. Glad you asked?

Yes in some circles I would be considered a Geezer, a Dodgy Geezer, umm yea, guess that's true too. Can't live a lie in my world, gotta at least be true to yourself or what's the sense. So much should be true for you too so guess you can call me "Dad" from now on.

I'm guessing in a few hours he'll apologize with a new excuse for his behavior, gain some people to back him up out of sympathy, discuss his bike for a few posts, and attempt to rip apart the next established mtbr member who tells him how he is. It's a vicious cycle, really.

Yup this is true, it seems that some of the more colorful new members must go though a learning curve. Remember Tone's welcoming? Some make the cut and some get banned. Which is pretty sad considering I'm still here so the bar must be set pretty low. Anyways, he was kinda fun while he lasted, maybe there's hope for him yet.

I don't remember Tone's welcome, for some reason. I'm sure it wasn't much different. Tone's a good guy, he means well in the end. I don't see that with Highlux. I don't see much hope for him, either. I'm just waiting around for a mod to read this thread and see what goes down. Bueller?

I wont apologize to you. You had no reason to snipe me other than provoke me. And allthough you are an established member, your true self is shining through here. Hypocrite.
The linked thread of yours above and the fact you rep sniped me only proves you are in fact a hypocrite. Granted. Maybe I can be a little rough around the edges. A person who contradicts there own posts and rep snipes after complaining about it happening to him.... at least I have my honor. You'll not take that from me. You have proven to have none.

You started the vengefullness....not me. I like the site alot. But I wont sit here and get backstabbed and sniped by someone with no honor.

Well that was a little dramatic...

I didn't "rep snipe" you until you were clearly an d*ck to many people. I considered it deserving to you, honestly. And you "rep sniped" me right back, so I don't see what the problem is. I think you're taking this all a bit too personally. I'm sure you're a swell guy, champ. Can I call you champ? It seems fitting.

You don't have to apologize but you also don't have to respond, get so defensive, or feel so threatened by a stranger in cyberspace. From where I'm sitting it seems that some members must be hitting a nerve and some truths if you need to respond so strongly. The choice is yours, or if you're not in control of yourself maybe not. Either way, if you want to get banned you're right on track.

I have been building a mantain a race car for years. Bikes are drop dead easy compared to cars. Just like with cars however you need to have the right tools and some place to get the knowledge. Once you have that bike work easy.

As for 29ers I have never ridden one, but they are different. I took a new rider friend out to get a new entry level mtn bike. He had been ridding my old 26" hardtail and when we looked a bike he had the option of two hardtails. One 26 and the other 29. Both same mfg, same parts and same price. He picked the 26er because it felt more controllable. More like a BMX and that was his comment. I tried to explain rollover advantage of the 29er, but he wanted the control. So he go the 26er. Fine with me as I think either bike will work and the best bike is the one you are most comfortable on. Especially when new to riding. If he really gets into riding in the next few years we can consider nice mid range bike and then maybe revisit a 29er or 27.5.

I dont want to get banned. I'd personally like to get along with everyone. Ill admit it's very hard for me to let someone get the last snipe without responding. And if I was in one of his threads doing it...then I'd be the bad guy for sure. But he came here....by choice. He called me a dick. By choice. He pooped in my yard. I have done it before too....but Illl admit it and say sorry. He could of just read what he wanted and moved on. He wanted to jab at me. I poked back. Someone pokes me...I poke back 10 times harder.

I did put on a nice string of profanity. All I see are symbols. I assume that is for everyone? total profanity blocker? I mean little kids cant see real cuss words on here right?

Im all over the bike tools. Looks like Park is the brand. I see the like $5500 set.....the tool hoarder is trying to justify it, but this damn life wisdom is saying what the hell are you thinking? I choose to order a cheapie ebay kit...just to have the chain whip..hub tools...and crank puller tool. And the bb tools. Like 60 bucks I think. Im hoping its here by Sat.

I found all the parts for my yota so it should be up and going this evening when my buddy gets of National Guard work detail or whatever its called.

I wrecked myself bad from all the crap I did yesterday. Im all crooked and geeked up bad.

Pretty simple formula to me guys. Dont mess with me. You can poke me light heartedly and we can banter and have fun. Calling me a dick isnt cool.

I find some your post down right funny. However I never let my panties get in a wad about stuff posted on the net so it takes a lot to get to me.

Best advice for you is not get caught in back and forth jabs. On occasional zinger to put some punk in his place comes off as funny, but going back at it over and over comes off as mean and bitter.

Hilux, You come in here complaining about other forums and their members and how you lurk in the shadows due to the attitudes there. Yet, it seems like a similar trend is following here. However, oddly in your mind the problem is everyone else and not you.

So relax and quit worrying because much stronger people than you have been butt hurt by a lot less.

Park tools are like Snap-on tools. Very nice and very expensive. My father was a pro auto tech for most of his working life so I know a few things about tools. Some tools are worth to spend big money on because you use them day in and day out to make money. You Need the best tools in a environment like that. However for us weekend guys we don't need that same level of quality.

I have alot of tools from my father who is now retired and I will say that some tools are clearly better than other and most all snap-on tools are very nice. However there are other tool mfg that make great stuff too and since I don't wrench all day every day I don't need the best.

For bikes this means you may want a few Park tools here and there for stuff you will use alot, but really you can get by with less. I have basic tool kit I bought for under $100 and I used it to build my bike, It works well for what I need and infact lots automotive tools work as well. It is only the special bike stuff is where I need different tools and those I don't use that often for the most part.

A good bike stand is probably worth an investment as it will get alot of use. I bought a cheap one from pricepoint for about $100 and it works well. I am happy with it, but I also never realized how much use it gets. If I knew how much use it gets between the mtn bike, road bike and spare mtn bike I might have gotten a better one. I pretty much toss the bike in the stand to do anything. Even lubing the chain is easier in the stand. That said I have not had any issues with stand I have.

Meds only made me goofy In the evening. I dont take the pain stuff during the day..just anti inflamatory. I take pain stuff couple hours before bed to sleep. Otherwise I roll around all night in pain and cant sleep. I probably should take it in the day...but I dont want to get addicted to it. I have seen my tolerance get somewhat higher, so Im keeping this regiment. I can live with some pain in the day...long as Im not lifting or bending alot. or moving really...lol

So this morning was me being a dick. But damnit, I was just settled in and thinking my gang initiation was over....and someone suckerpunched me. I wasnt the guy who stood there going wtf when someone hit me or attempted to. I react. It's like those messin with sasquatch commercials. Pun intended.

No broken vertebrae or other parts. Worn out discs is the problem. The back surgeries are known as fusion. The hardware holds the verts and stuff in position while the bone grows together.

I didnt realize they used screws. I thought it was strips of bone from your leg or a cadaver. I may be facing a 3 level fusion and I got a big rupture in my cervicals and they think a thorasic too, but still have to get the thorassic mri. First doctor missed all 4 ruptures and tried to tell me it wasnt possible to do the thorrasic. I fired him. Thank god in Missouri if you own the company and are the hurt person...you can choose your provider and even change if the first one is bad. New doctor had to send a report in to the insurance company, unfortunatley bashing a fellow surgeon because they mishandled my treatment so badly.

Guess you were right Squatch. While this thread is one of the more interesting that we've had in a while it's also very strange. From his personality it seems to belong in OC, from his back the rider down forum, from his bike the vintage/retro, from his experience the beginners, from it's content the recycling bin, and I don't think there's a forum big enough to fit his ego yet here we are.
Guess it's sorta like why people watch shows like Jerry Springer. I thought I had problems and now I feel blessed. Thanx Highlux!

It may be a good idea to lock this maybe? I dont care if it stays open, but I dont want to fuss with anyone anymore. We can banter and have fun, but I took to heart some of the above posts and suggestions, and alot of you were right. Old enough to know better. And old enough not to care. Best age to be.

Nothing wrong with trolling, nor with being funny. But ya might want to take it down a notch, no need for you to be at 11 all the time. Some would call it trying just a bit too hard.

Hopped in the runner and checked out the nearest bike store. Grabbed a couple tubes and some lube and gease. Should give me a project to do now. I know I could of went to wally world or ordered em...It was also a scouting mission. I asked.."What brands you guys carry? They gut replied "Trek and Trek". I smelled a slight whiff of elitism in the air, but knew they wouldnt smart off or anything stupid. Ill give them a shot to earn my loyalty. They are only like 5 min away...so thats pretty handy. Thye have some park tools there...I would of checked em out but it was close to closing, and I didnt want to be that guy that lingered after closing. It is Saturday after all.

Lemme guess Slugger - new Cyclist are we??

'Trek and Trek' got you in a wad?? Do some simple research and you'd learn the core of these misconceptions you feel, just with whomever at your new local bike shop trying to be humorous. People who deal w/ the real Public usually are pretty good at promoting conversation...

    Come back then.

kjlued, keep the dude's wife out of it. This thread is gold. No need to rush it into the bin.

Highlux, nice improvement on resisting the bait.

I started to ask kjlued to leave family insults out of this banter, but Highlux just responded in a likewise manner.

I encourage you guys to rise above that. Be better than that; its not hard. Keep it interesting, but don't provoke someone to want to take this beyond the forum. I'd be pissed to see MTBR pasted all over Fox news........

So it looks like the meds and managing pain can make things pretty changeable. Now I know that if I want to give you grief I will do it in the evening when you are all mellow. I'd give you grief now but I cannot think of anything clever to say.

No, really, I got nothin. Been working several hundred images today and the brain's toast. But if I wake up in the middle of the night with a snappy retort I'm a'comin' on line.

It's ok I can take it. Just sent my toyota budduy off.Came over and the wife made us a nice dinner. Im really thankful that the internet can bring people together with common intrests. I made a great freind this weekend. Nice to meet up with people in real life you normally wouldnt due to distance. My buddyhas one more day of duty then gets to drive 6 hours home...to go straight to work all night. Wow. Guess he has PT tests or something today. Had to run 2 miles and jazz. He says they are doing hand to hand combat now using the Gracie fighting system. How cool. Soldiers learning arm bars. I like it.

For the trolls...make fun of me all you want. I dont care. Just shows me to avoid dealing with. And believe me...I get PM's from alot of people telling me positive things.

Sorry no med babble tonight...I forgot to take them until just now. Night.

    Come back then.
I had a good interaction at the bike store. Im personable. Hell I was in sales for a couple years when I took a break from tile. I was Finance manager at local honda dealership.
Was great money and free car...but the hours were long and I was bored. I like to work with my hands and make stuff.

    Here are a few projects...

This was a 4 year old house...total showe replacement...cause the original tilework was nto caulked. It rotted out. Did whole job with a damn broken hand.
My own dog bite me. (my fault) I can show the gruesome pic after it happened if you want.

The tile pattern above was once reserved for royalty. 15 pieces per segment of pattern. $18 a square foot Claros Silver Travertine. Gorgeous floor.

Above...floating out a prefloat for custom octogon shower pan for tile floor.

Custom insert in entryway. Laser straight.

I got a billion more. If anyone is ever doing any tile work...feel free to ask questions...or look on my photobucket these pics came from. Its public. Good for ideas if you are ever doing a bath remodel oe kitchen..etc.

    I will miss doing it.
