New question here. Why do people like music?

I like music, but I don't know why I like it.

Why do some people (including me) spend so much time and money on music?

It's not something our bodies need, like food or water.

Why does it make us feel so good?

Because without music people like Rush Limbaugh will be chattering about crap on the radio
and life will look like a black & white movie.
    People wouldn't be dancing either.

And also I wouldn't be dj'ing on the side for extra cash.

Music tags the times of our lives. Hearing a specific song can take us back to that time. Sometimes a happy memory, sometimes a sad one.

Rhythm and melody are audible manifestations of the soul and bones of the Universe and what holds it all together. That is why it makes us feel good.

Hmmm, all except Rick Astley... and Rihanna... Katy Perry... Most hip hop 'songs'... a lot of others... wait!... my theory just flamed and plummeted to the ground!

Because we are nothing but well fed cavemen with a lot of toys and responding to sounds like music is what cavemen do.

I like music because it's an effective distraction from other people's monotonously uninteresting monlogues/conversations, usually about things I really couldn't care any less about.

In fact, my order of preference is:
    1. music.
    2. talking to my pets.
    3. silence
    4.. awkward/eerie silence
    5. talking to myself.
    6. a cacophony of 'noise' like construction vehicles/tools being operated.
    7. talking to others.

And most people like it from a very early age. My kids all started to dance, wiggle, or otherwise react to music from 9 or 10 months. My 22 mo old has apparent favorite songs already - some songs make him stop in his tracks and dance with a huge smile on his face. Funniest thing ever.

Some people don't. My high school baseball coach didn't like music. He said it sounded the same to him as someone banging on trash cans, and it drove him crazy when we would play music on trips to road games. Apparently it is some kind of disorder.

I forget if we have spoken about this - what do you spin?
Me? Techno, Trance, breaks - and some DnB - I'd like to get into some dubstep as a new challenge - but, I haven't seen anything (much) in vinyl - everything seems to be going to digital - I could do it if I had my stolen MBPro back and Serato or Traktor (prefer Serrato)

Music makes chics dance. When chics dance they like to drink. When chics drink they get horny. When chics get horny guys get laid. In other words, music gets guys laid.

    Vonnegut wrote,

"I was once asked why I like reading.
I didn't know what to say."

About music, its vibrating air. It's wonderful.

    Another man said,
"studying music in college was probably the most self indulging period of my life"

    Why not?

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I thought about it more, and it seems like people have a variety of different reasons for liking music.

For me, I like the way the rhythm feels. Music feels similar to riding my bicycle fast over a bunch of medium size bumps. My ears like the vibrations of music. My body likes the vibrations of riding a bicycle off-road and driving my car fast.

That's a good question. I know I can enjoy it without understanding exactly why I like it. I just spend a lot of time wondering about things that I don't need to know the answers to.

The reason we like music is because, certain types of music release chemicals in your brain due to the processing the stimuli. Some make you feel good, energized, sad, It makes you feel some emotion, in a way its a drug.

I wish I had long hair so i could circle head bang.

I was looking at the history of instruments with a friend not too long ago. We were joking about the first bone flute. We imagined the inventor some 40,000 years ago playing whatever possible. For some reason or another, he became a man in our imagination (because they're the only ones that invent stuff-right? ) After that, he was getting all the damn ladies with his bone flute. Think about that, what do all the other guys got? Clubs? Yeah, all the ladies know Og can club a grouse, but hey, look at Jimb-Awa! He's got a bone flute! Making noise and making noise that sounds good are two different things, but back then, ****, who cares! Bone flute!
