I have seen all of the above and I have to vote for -> Panic in Year Zero.
It has the best realism overall and can be considered a survival manual for SHTF...

You guys are naming more dystopian movies than post-apocalyptic. If we're going dystopian, I have to say Idiocracy is one of my favorite.

I see there is a 2000 re-make which I'm going to assume is easier to find. I doubt it is better than the 59' but have you seen it? Any good?

OK, you stole mine. Has been and always will be my all-time favorite post-apocalypse movie. But I really like Z.P.G. also. Post-apocalyptic and dystopian both. Pretty messed up, almost the opposite of Children of Men. Zero Population Growth

I'm looking at your lists and starting to wonder if I have some kind of post-apocalypse fettish. I've seen nearly every movie mentioned so far, and really liked them all.
I'm enjoying my childhood way too much to ever give it up.

Ok, next list might be harder or easier to fill, not quite sure how many readers there are on this forum...

We need a thread on post apocalyptic books...

Reading a couple now by Steven R Boyett.

A great series is the So Dies the Fire by Sterling.

One that I read many years ago was by Heinlein, titled Farnham's Freehold.

As a kid I was rather impressed with "Stalker". Watched it again recently, and did not like it.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the Terminator series.

When I was 12, I watched this animated film "Where the Wind Blows". Given that it was animated, I thought it was "safe". No way. Incredibly haunting tale of an old couple surviving a nuclear holocaust and living out the rest their days dying from radiation in a wasteland. Look it up on IMDB and read the reviews.

The Matrix is neato, but there are some very, very interesting films out there that tackle the post apocalyptic genre very well.

I had to go look through my DVD collection, to see what I've missed so far.

I found three in the "D" section alone...

The Day After Tomorrow fits I think.

Death Race (I had the remake, but Death Race 2000 is a sure fit as well)

    And Doomsday.

This isn't a feature length movie at all, but you really should watch this short if you like post-apocalyptic, machines rule type movies. It is all CGI, and in HD it is absolutely brilliant! Whoever the guy is that made it, did a really wonderful job, and it leaves you wanting more for sure.
