    Vandal painting in National Parks

?Art? in the Parks | Modern Hiker

The epitome of the selfish, look-at-me gen? Crawling over petroglyphs to add her mark, et cetera. Outrageous...but with a nice crumb trail for investigators. Here's to eventual justice...

Ugh, this is so frustrating. She claims to be an avid hiker? Sometimes I just don't understand people. I guess I'll be making a cross country trip eastward and....

    Oh nevermind.

May you get run over by a paint truck Casey Nocket.

I've done a little defacing over the years myself. It's amazing how different they look without their faces attached. Kinda gory.

Maybe somebody could tattoo her forehead with that face she's been painting. You know, kinda like what happened to Col Landa in Inglorious Basterds. I think its important that we can identify her if she decides to head out to the wilderness again.

What a piece of work she is. I hope they catch her and prosecute to the fullest. Scroll to the end of that artical and check out the moronic responses.

I think the art she has created should not be scorned upon based on the fact that some national parks have inscriptions dated back hundreds of years ago. All she is doing is creating a canvas upon a canvas that simple chemicals could remove.

I have been wondering about what constitutes art, and when art becomes vandalism, and to my mind, art is art if it is a creative expression that improves upon the canvas or medium that it is laid on.
A bare canvas is the lowest common denominator, an urban brick wall or bare concrete expanse could be acceptable, but the lines start to get blurred here: it rather depends on the environment. A subway train is debatable, as some consider these machines an abomination, and any painting on them an improvement, but the authorities whose job it is to maintain them see it is simple vandalism. Art as rebellion.
To paint or scrawl on nature's wonders is simply not acceptable in my mind. Even Mt Rushmore is an example of this.

Still working on this... let me know what y'all think

Was floating in a slot canyon a couple years ago eating lunch and looked up the side of the wall and saw graffiti quite high up along with "Text Sam 928-416-9577" below it.

I took pictures of it and sent them to the NPS Rangers and filed a complaint. They followed up with me a couple weeks later. Sam had been charged and would be held accountable for the cost to clean up his mess. The cost could be great as well since the water level had dropped a considerable amount since he completed his handy work.

Any so called art placed upon any canvas without authorization such as a train or building is vandalism. Any so called art placed upon the "natural environment" is vandalism. Any questions? I didn't think so.

Not only that but Banksy is at least painting over things that are not naturally beautiful and that can always be simply painted back over again.

Wow, what a moron. She even looks the part of a self absorbed, narcissistic, attention who.....eh, seeker. I say give her the James Bond treatment. Drive her ass out into the middle of the biggest desert you can find, during the hottest part of the year. No food, no water, but here's a gallon of acrylic paint should you get thirsty.

We used to be able to get up close and personal with the petroglyphs in Joshua Tree Natl Park but now the main viewing area is guarded by a Ranger because some damned fools went and added their own art right next to them.

The cool thing is, there's still lots of secret Petroglyphs within the Park if you know were they are. I once crawled up into a gas pocket hole in a monzo granite rock. The hole was big enough around and long enough for me to get inside with my sleeping bag. I was pleasantly surprised to find a Petroglyph inside.

Very cool, sounds painful though. Isn't that sharp rock? Must have been quite the surprise to crawl up in there to see the petroglyphs. Whatever you do don't tell anybody where they are - except for trusted acquaintances.

Not smooth, not sharp. Some have rougher surfaces than others. This one was fairly smooth all things considered.

    Yes!
I lived very close to it for years and never poached it. In fact it was directly across the street from one of my weekly riding spots.

I felt the need to respond to a sock for some reason.

Yes, and riding on a trail where the breeze erases my footprints/tire tracks overnight is exactly the same as painting over centuries-old petroglyphs.

It sometime takes a few days for the steel-shod horse prints to disappear.

I think she'd throw the flowers on the ground and stomp on them...

Mook, the way to get to her heart would be with a care package that came complete with spray paint cans and permanent markers, both in various colors. That would get her all buttery for ya!

There are petroglyphs in Death Valley on a remote road that requires a high clearance vehicle. I suspect that those are fairly safe from the modern day hippies.

That is very encouraging. And if the neo hippies happen to have a suitable vehicle they wouldn't know how to use it anyhow.

Re: Vandal painting in National Parks

Someone needs to tattoo that picture she keeps desecrating the parks with on her forehead. Do it forcefully and without permission, just as she's done. Punishment befitting the crime. Call it art. See how she likes it.

What's kinda funny is that years ago I worked at Copper Mountain, CO as a lift op. Afterwards we would go to the main lodge and pound a few beers before going home. Every day they had these cheesy lounge type singers who sang the greatest hits from the 60's, 70's and 80's. It was the same damn songs every night and this was one of them. I may have been suppressing this song as a coping mechanism.

You do realize that this is how girls learn how to kiss, right? This is what being sisters is all about. Just think about the other things they can teach each other.

I learned to kiss with my teddy bear when I was a teen, I mean, very young... Only thing was, my bear was a Koala, (Aussie heritage), and only had a sort of beaky nose thing, so my first 'real girlfriend' was a little puzzled when I tried to kiss her for the first time...

I'd call it "Young but saggy."

You can practically see the socks and pool balls.

Hey guys I think she's doing the right thing. She makes new ancient heiroglyphs or whatever they are called. In a 1000 years from now futuristic people will find these and be amazed. All people should go out and make those paintings, just like the ancient people did. Somehow all you guys seems to think the ancient people that made the ancient paintings were special. They were special, just like everyone else... all, what, 8 billion of us.

I got a friend who does exactly that.
Except he does not deface authentic rock art. He finds petroglyph-worthy boulders in areas that do not have Fed or State protection, and he has an entire set of rock-carving tools.

He'll take a entire day to carve out some cryptic-looking symbols and pics, thinking that some future anthropologists will find them and have a "WTF?" moment before they carbon-date the cuts and figure out that it's a joke.

It's what I think of as a long-term sense of humor.

We have a guy here in Hamilton that carves all the tree stumps along our lake trails. We like it the city doesn't have to pay staff to remove the stumps and we get art along the trail.

That's cool. A genuine public service! Looks like that takes him some time, too.

It's really mind boggling how she can show no remorse and be so selfish that she decided that her joy trumps all of our shared love for our beautiful public places. They should ban her from museums in case she decides that her art is more beautiful than that of Van Gogh, Monet and Renoir.

She's rich, all she will have to do is slip the ranger at the gate a few bills and she's back in.

she was apparently eligible for fine of up to $700k, but they didn't want to saddle the poor youngster with such a financial burden. they should have garnished her starbucks tips for the rest of her life, what an irresponsible ass-hat. they should have thrown the book at her until they knocked her over.

Hey, ya wanna meet up for a tour through Death Valley this late Fall? I know my way around that Park quite well.

Bike/bikepacking or 4X4 will get the job done.

I didn't realize what "teton" translated to until I was at an international conference this June and they mentioned that a future meeting would be in that area and when they said "grand tetons" these French people behind me started laughing. The more you know!!!
