Just deposit $1M with Fidelity and they'll give you a free copy of TurboTax Premier (worth about 0.008% of the money you've given them).

In protest, I switched to a lower cost competitor several years ago. I had to do my taxes a little early for my daughter's financial aid application. We had moved that tax year and when I got to the section that covered that, a message popped up saying that section of the software wasn't available yet! Naturally, they didn't mention that the software was incomplete until after you'd spend a lot of time inputting data. They had a expected to be ready date and they missed it, but fortunately by only a few days and it was still early enough to meet my deadline (well before April 15th).

Then the next year, I figured it would all be good. Went through and did all my federal and then when I started my state, I discovered they did not include a form I needed for a big tax credit. Did some googling, and nope, wasn't in their software but it was in Turbo Tax's. So I ended up redoing the whole thing in Turbo Tax. And now I just use Turbo Tax. The trick is, don't go for the upgraded more expensive packages or other add-on sales. Still not all that cheap but it's easy and convenient.

    1. Use TT to calculate everything, but don't e-file.
    2. Transpose the numbers from TT forms to the IRS free file fillable forms.

The same guy has been doing mine for years! I actually trained him when he came to work with me at the insurance broker I used to work for.

He always tells me to give him whatever I want. I do pay him fairly, wouldn't take advantage of the situation.

Don't forget, peeps, you can write-off whatever you spent on tax prep/software to do your previous year's taxes.

You guys who just have a W2 shouldn't need TurboTax, just fill out a basic 1040 by hand. Takes about 15 minutes max. It's the folks with all kinds of income streams, properties and deductions that need it (or a good CPA).

Intuit knows this and makes TurboTax free for simple 1040 type filers with no dependents - to hook 'em while they're young and innocent.

Here are free federal filing options if your AGI is $69K or less: https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/. Some have free state filing.

Just file an extension, then you don't have to worry about it till Sept 15.

I think that's included in Tardy Tax Premier. I think you can also get multiple extensions.

Federal basic return is free, you must be 18 and your first time filing taxes. Have no clue how things really work.

Last year my daughter had income from 2 states (CA, NY). Based on the thresholds, only CA required filing a return (because of course). But that meant we had to do federal. And we went ahead and did NY because it generated a refund. We did all 3 with online free filings.
