Swedish boutique automaker Koenigsegg produces 3-cyl engine with 600 horsepower

    https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-car...pecs-analysis/

I first heard about technology like this a while ago from an auto shop manager, back in 2006-2007. Toyota was experimenting with magnets next to intake/exhaust valves instead of using camshafts. They were able to get the redline up to 14,000 rpm, but I think that was just for racing purposes, not for street cars. Well...I dunno if this Swedish car will ever be street-legal in the US, but the engine is pretty cool. Even without any forced induction (in this case turbo), it makes 280 horsepower from only two liters. With turbos, 600 horsepower --- from a three-cylinder! It doesn't really help gas mileage much (that I know of) but in a sports car, saving 200-400 lbs off the engine is a huge weight-based advantage. It's the equivalent of having a lightweight Formula-1 engine in a street car. Could you imagine putting this in a Lotus or Miata?

That’s one of the most exciting things I’ve seen in the automotive industry in a long time. Pretty fascinating.

Koenigsegg is also working with a Texas artificial intelligence company, SparkCognition, to develop AI engine management software for Freevalve engines like the TFG. "The system will learn over time the best ways to operate the valves, what's most frugal, what's cleanest… It will eventually start doing things we’ve never thought of," Koenigsegg says. "It'll float in and out of different ways of combusting by itself, eventually in ways not completely understandable to us."

    Yellow light.

That is an amazing little engine. I saw a video of a Smart car with the drivetrain from a Hayabusa that made for an impressive little drift car. Imagine this in a Smart car!

Pretty cool. I’m hoping more new engine tech starts trickling down to the consumer.

It would be great to have a car that could produce 300-400hp when asked, but still get 35-40mpg+ when cruising down the interstate.
