    RIP, Col. Bruce Hampton

This one hurts, but what a way to go!

Musician collapses during birthday concert finale and dies

    ATLANTA

When Col. Bruce Hampton slowly fell to his knees during the finale of his star-studded birthday concert, fans and musicians alike thought it was another one of his quirky performance acts.

Fourteen-year-old guitar phenom Brandon "Taz" Niederauer tore into a blistering solo as the 70-year-old man lay motionless at his feet, his arm draped over a speaker.

For several more minutes, dozens of musicians — including John Popper of Blues Traveler, Warren Haynes of The Allman Brothers Band and John Bell of Widespread Panic — jammed away to one of Hampton's favorite songs "Turn On Your Love Light." The fans danced and the musicians smiled as they waited for him to get up.

    But Col. Bruce never did.

The eccentric guitarist and singer known as the forefather of the jam band scene died after collapsing Monday night at the end of the show billed by Atlanta's Fox Theatre as "Hampton 70: A Celebration of Col. Bruce Hampton." He had turned 70 a day earlier.

Check this disc of his out, from 1992. I've been into some of his stuff for a while, here's the live disc that got me interested. If you like Umphrey's McGee, Captain Beefheart, you'll like this, too. The drummer is amazing. All the musicians are, actually. Crazy stuff.

It is a sad deal. At least he died being honored.

“Bruce was the only person I could think of who has ever played at his own funeral, because in essence, that’s what he did,” Scott McKinney, a bluegrass musician known professionally as Fudd who said that he had known Mr. Hampton more than 20 years, said in a telephone interview. “Bruce couldn’t script it any better.”

Yesterday's article didn't mention that the other performers just kept up the show. What a shame! He might have been saved had they realized it wasn't performance art.
Goya! It's got what plants crave. It's got electrolytes. Livin in an Idiocracy.

Just remember that when I collapse on the trail on our next ride. I don't do performance art on rides.

Not sure if you are familiar with his earlier work, search "Late Bronze Age Band" on youtube, found a vid of a concert from the early '80s.
This post is a natural product. Variances in spelling & grammar should be appreciated as part of its character & beauty.
