    Referencing previous posts

OK quite often I see people using ^^^ to reference a previous post without quoting it, which is all fine and dandy, I understand it... but pretty much this is the only place I see it.
I was always led to understand from ye oldie dark days of the intrweb forums that ^ references the post above, and then multiples of "^" reference a post X above(post above ^, post 3 posts above ^^^, etc).

Is it a US thing (I come from Aust and UK forums originally), a new thing, the actual thing or some other thing?

DJ has a forum posting rule book. (thousand page volumes, up to volume XVII now, I believe)

He will consult and get back to you.

I always thought it originated with the bash shell replacement command.

    > echo foo
    foo
    > ^foo^bar
    bar

Meaning, "I agree with the above so am adding my name to it." Also variants on +1 get used for the same thing.

Such a simple rule I'm at a loss that one has to refer to the rule book.

Rule book volume 5 chapter 9 page 438 third paragraph down it clearly states:

And I quote: "when using any ^^ arrows no matter how many are used, it always refers to the immediate post above that post". If by chance you don't post quick enough and another member posted in that spot before you. One must delete and repost with the quoted post for reference. Any posts referencing any posts above the immediate post above yours must always contain a quoted reference to the quote referenced".

    Pretty simple really.

    10 hours ago ^^ since.

Rule book, volume 8 page 456 fourth chaper 2nd paragraph down clearly states. Any post past 8 hours and 45 minutes clearly has no real interest in the subject.

Alright, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. It clearly states that a symbol of recent subject interest such as the arrow symbol ^^^ isn't necessarily set in concrete to previous rules in the rule books. But rather is said in jest in other threads just to tie humor together through out the OC. It's actually stated in the last volume of the OC rule books. Overlooked by many and held tight by few.

It probably makes sense that talk or any reference to Volkswagens as VW be banned for sake of confusion but someone else has to make, enforce or approve that kind of thing. Until then
