    Olympics 2014!

Starting in just over two weeks....

We just hooked up our big 50+" rear-projection TV to an antenna and converter box we found in the shed out back. All set fo' free!

Anyone else getting ready for the big games?

Kinda lost interest in that stuff some years back. But I might watch it a little more this time around to see the terrorist attacks live. Sad, so sad.

I was working on the opening and closing ceremonies in Torino 2006 and security was super tight when we got within 2 weeks of the opening. It could take 45 mins to get into the stadium each time, so I figured out a great way to cut the lines and save time... I would take pizza boxes with me and they would invariably wave me thru so the pizza wouldn't get cold. Italians and their pizza!
Hope Sochi haven't hired any Italian security dudes...

I have a feeling that the games will rather "explosive" this time around.

Really enjoy the winter olympics. 2014 is being held in Sochi with the most active insurgents in the world. Bonus, it's also the 150th anniversary of the Muslims being eradicated from the region, and we all know how forgiving they are. With all of this, 30,000 troops are there to impose martial law, plus they've added this special security feature.

Sochi, Russia - where a trainer/bodyguard can observe your every movement!

Pretty sure the second photo is somewhere else - saw it yesterday and would have to search it out to say where though.

I always knew the Norwegians can be a bit strange at times but what is going on here with the curling team? Is this part of a plan to distract the opposing team and gain an unfair advantage or do they moonlight as a barbershop quartet?

I hear the Russkis have built an unprecedented 3 uphill sections into the luge course.

Looks like SOMEBODY learned something from the Canadians' Luge "Track of Death".

If anybody here gets the Canadian Broadcasting Corp (CBC) give it a try for Olympic coverage. They show primetime events live (well it's primetime for us Left Coast folks) and tend to show a more comprehensive number of participants in the events. This is a welcome change from the NBC primetime coverage where it's usually the American athletes plus a few choice competitors from other countries.

NBC's daytime coverage is pretty comprehensive as well, if you can record it or something else. Today they showed the entire men's Nordic Combined event on the normal hill. Their primetime coverage sucks though. More "human interest" stories, commercials, and interviews than actual sporting events. And then if they do manage to show an event, they cut it up and only show one or two runs, without any continuity. Things that make me angry....

Also, it was ~50F at Sochi today. A quick Wikipedia shows that Sochi has a subtropical climate. The Games are going great, but the location was a terrible choice by IOC; who the f%ck would think that an acceptable host city for Winter Games would have a reputation as a summer resort city with a subtropical climate!?

I can actually pull off some of those moves and I run normal skis. Ballet skis are upturned at both ends. I used to ski with a guy that was awesome at it and ran ballet skis. I learned some moves from him. But I must agree with you it's not my favorite. I was always into mogul skiing and freestyle jumping.

I've been catching some of the MSNBC and NBCSN coverage which tends to be better for sure. That primetime is unwatchable, except for Bob Costa's eyes which were freaking me out.

No kidding, could we get the Winter Olympics out of the tropics. The snow conditions have been deplorable. I ski so I care about these things.

Yup, it sure was. In fact ballet was a World Cup event back in the '80's. Just awful.

Skiing in the 80's was quite an experience. I too knew a ballet skier or two who could bust some moves. Never understood it though, even when it was popular. Back then moguls where the thing, especially in CO. Nowdays it's big mountain and deep pow! Oh yeah baby!

Right? Unlike a Norwegian person winning a cross country race or a Russian winning a figure skating medal. A Kenyan winning a footrace...

Speaking of....does anybody watch Boundless? One of the Canadian guys actually try to run in a Kenyan endurance race.

I was happy to see somebody else win the halfpipe for once. His loss looks even worse since he dropped out of slope style. Lol, maybe he should have competed. You know times are changing when the other slope style riders are calling him out, telling him he's afraid.

I started souring on the tomato when he had Red Bull build his secret half pipe that nobody else got to use. Definitely not the snowboard culture. Good for him for reaping riches from his talent but that doesn't mean I have to root for him when he's on the snow.

I didn't really know much about him - I'm not a snow kind of person - but seeing the way he was portrayed in "the crash reel" made me an anti-fan.

The US speed skaters are getting demolished this year. So far 0 medals. I'm not one to make excuses but in this instance I'm wondering if there might be something to the theory that their new skin suits are creating drag?

*Edit* It looks like the US skaters are ditching the new suits in favor of the old. This should be interesting...

Gotta love you American broadcasters for thinking you come in 1st because you come in 3rd the most

Nbc and some other sites are putting Americans tied for 1st with 13 medals, 4 gold, 3 silver, and 6 bronze.

    | NBC Olympics

While the Sochi olympic site puts Germany in the lead with 7 golds, 2 silver, and 1 Bronze.

    Medals - Sochi 2014 Olympics

The simple way to put it is the country with most golds win. If there is a tie then the country with the most silver wins and so forth with the bronze.

Sorry NBC but coming in third doesn't put you in 1st place.

The medal count has always struck me as strange. I can't even imagine being the 30-50 best anything in the world so I don't really care which nation medals. I don't think a lot people in the US really cares about how many people medals and what sort of medals they have and don't really pay attention to those trackers like you guys apparently do. :P teasing!

p.s. The only exception is hockey. I want the US to beat Canada.

If I were NBC I'd turn the whole Winter Games to former athletes. I thought Apollo Ono did great, Dan Janssen is really good on camera and who can ever get enough Peek-a-boo Street. Or they could hire former Luge athletes and change their motto to "NBC, we're a bunch of old-Lugers!"

Bob's been completely out of sight lately. I wonder if he's been carted off to some sort of maximum security medical facility. He looked like he was either coming down with Ebola or in the early stages of zombie transformation. Whatever it is, it didn't look good for him. RIP Bob.

Turns out, it wasn't pink eye after all. His hotel room T.V. only got Russian Sub-titled versions of Night Rider and The View. The redness was caused by him trying to poke his eyes out.

I agree. Chinese and Russians. I guess it's because of their track record. Although that seems unfair since I don't think Germany cheats at all but remember how huge their athletes were?

Appear the biggest dopers in Sochi are the editors @ NBC.
Christin Cooper caught the heat for her interview fail of Bode Miller, yet NBC editors really phucked da pooch here..

"Now was truly the time to stop. If you’ve made a medal winner cry, it is time to simply say “thank you” and move on. It was on tape, so NBC could have cut it off and gone to Matt Lauer in the studio. Instead, Cooper forged on, wondering whom he seemed to be talking to when he looked up in the sky before he started his run down the mountain."

Yeah. That was such bullshit. The guy is in his last Olympics and so happy he medaled after putting it all out there all week. He already tried to deflect earlier when she started her awful line of questioning and she kept at it until she made him cry. So mean!

I am glad to see that I'm not the only one who thought that was a cheap and exploitive stunt on her part. It's like she made him cry, then she just worked him to see how MANY tears she could make him squeeze out. I was hoping for an errant hockey puck to just come sailing in out from the left and nail her square in the temple, but God was not taking requests that night.

They did the same thing to Katie Uhlaender who finished off the podium in women's skeleton. They just kept after her, asking her what her late father would think, etc until she cried. Bastards.

As far as I know, figure skating is finally over. Not that NBC aired that instead of snowboard cross these past few days or anything. Maybe the end of figure skating will finally make primetime semi-watchable?

    In other news....

pay attention. a couple of double posts of gifs already. :P

how can you not watch hockey!! us/russia/canada games are great! and the buzz lightyear team is doing great too.

I will concede the boringness of luge/skeleton/bobsled, ski jumping, aeriels, speed skating, and curling though.

I was watching a little of it last night and for some reason they turned up the volume when a free style skier tore up his knee so we could all hear him wailing out in pain. WTF NBC, just WTF.

Correct. Rubbing the brush on the ice creates a film of water for the stone to slide on.

Crashed on both half pipe runs too. Young guy though, he could come back around. The US guys were supposed to do much better, but only 2 made that cut for the final. One other thing I noticed was how baggy the outfits were for the half pipe skiers vs the boarders. It was the complete opposite of my youth, but I guess it will come back around in the next decade.

Yeah, it'll change. Skiing will stop being cool once all the kids doing it now grow up, and then snowboarding will be cool again.

From slopestyle last week, the commentators said his pants are apparently 4XL.

I disagree. Skiing has always be around and it will always stay. It's not a bike tire size type of comparison - two very different disciples with different skillsets that doesn't necessary cross over as easily as it looks to people that haven't tried it.

I can still remember my dad telling me that the "10-Speed bike fad" wouldn't last long. He was right, we went to 12-speeds 5 years later. Ski-Ballet was an epic fail (the rythmic gymnastics of the winter games) but who doesn't want to watch more stunts in the half-pipe?

I totally agree with that. What I meant (and should have said) is that the demographics of each discipline will change. Today's freestyle skiers will eventually get "old," and the kids of the future will want to do something different. It's the same thing that happened with snowboarding when that first hit the mainstream. The young kids picked it up because it was new and different. They grew up snowboarding, got "old," and the younger kids of today's generation took the skis to the terrain park because it was new and different.

gob: This was in response to my observation of the clothing style being the complete opposite of my youth. The boarders were all about baggy, now it's the skiers a decade or so later. Part of what influences the younger style is the hand me downs from brothers, cousins and garage sale finds which can be baggy on the younger frame. Bro's response can be interpreted to mean the sport, but in the context of my comment it's about the fashion. We have enough to argue about concerning wheelsize, let's not make it about 1 plank or 2. I've had enough of that, but I still want the plankers out of my half pipe.

    It does many things

If you jump a rock (sweep hard just out of the throwers hand) the rock will not curl has much near the end of the end of the shot....but it will have about the same weight.

If the rock is a light draw and you sweep hard all the way that will result in a shot with more weight.

If you sweep on the edge of the rock that is on the side that is rotating forward you can put spin back on a rock that is not spinning or spinning too slow.

If you lightly sweep a rock you can prevent it from diving (curling hard and the end of the shot).

If you sweep a draw just before it finishes then it will curl more (called finishing the rock).

If you sweep a take out really hard you can sometimes back it up. That means make it curl the other direction.

KISFA (keep it simple for americans) A swept rock either goes farther or is held straigter

Yes, but I've seen numerous examples of accelerated aging due to excessive progeny generation, and I've never seen side-effects that manifested like THAT.

Today's events bring the medal total for the nearby area up to four. Two golds for Tahoe area, bronze for Truckee, and a gold for the hometown hero from Reno. Must be something in the air (besides the athletes themselves), so that means that I must be due for a medal too!

I noticed that practically the entire US Snowboard team seems to be based in Tahoe.

Props to Ted Ligety for winning the first ever US Olympic Gold in giant slalom. He's been beating up on the Euro's for awhile on the World Cup but couldn't put it together in the Olympics until now.

I saw a new-to-me event tonight that renewed my interests in the winter olympics - Ski cross. Basically BMX racing on skis. Very cool.

^ FYI Ski edges are razor sharp. Never afraid to race DH, ski trees, or huck cliffs, but to me - that looks fricking insane.

Yup, it's new to the Olympics this year. Same with ski halfpipe, if I remember correctly.

There's a Red Bull sponsored event called Crushed Ice here in MN, in St. Paul. Basically it's guys in hockey gear going down a a luge/bobsled like run, it's a free for all. It's a little crazy I've heard, I believe some checking is allowed.
I don't know why,... it's just MUSS easier to pedal than the other ones.

    A. Thanks to the Dutch ministry of irrevelance for that stinging commentary on American Sports. B. Sure football is more dangerous than Speedskating but I can't remember the last time the Dutch defeated an occupying army on U.S. soil. C. What was the connection again? Oh yeah, we're wasting talent. Do you really think Ndamukong Suh is suited for any ice skating sport? D. Your country medaled in one sport. Who's wasting their talent?

I saw this on TV last winter. Free for all sums it up nicely. My kids loved watching it.

In terms of skicross, I found a good video of it on youtube.

I didn't see any footage from yesterday race. I believe France took Gold, Silver and Bronze in the men's event. There were several major crashes on the last big jump on this year's course. The guys weren't holding anything back. Wonderfully entertaining.

No JS I don't want to go to war, where do you get that idea from. My point was that the U.S. helped run an occupying army off Dutch soil twice and they (to date) have never freed us from an occupying force. Irrelevant, sure, but no more so than the inane comparison between American's love of football (or any other non-ice skating sport) and Dutch romance with speed skating. If you read the article you'll see that I didn't raise the topic of death but the Dutch Ice Skating Coach did "on a sport that is meant to kill each other, to injure each other."

He was just giving the US a burn over all the expected speedskating medals that didn't come, even after swapping out the skin suits.

    Well close but not quite

Although the Netherlands remained neutral during the First World War, it was heavily involved in the war.[25] The German general Count Schlieffen, who was Chief of the Imperial German General Staff, had originally planned to invade the Netherlands while advancing into France in the original Schlieffen Plan. This was changed by Schlieffen's successor, Helmuth von Moltke the Younger, in order to maintain Dutch neutrality. Later during the war Dutch neutrality proved essential to German survival until the blockade by the British Royal Navy in 1916, when the import of goods through the Netherlands was no longer possible. The Dutch were nevertheless able to continue to remain neutral during the war using their diplomacy and their ability to trade.

On 19 January 1943, Princess Margriet was born. The day after Princess Margriet's birth, the Dutch flag was flown on the Peace Tower. This was the only time in history a foreign flag has waved above Canada's parliament buildings. In 1944–45, the First Canadian Army, which included Canadian, British and Polish troops, was responsible for liberating much of the Netherlands[34] from German occupation. The joyous "Canadian summer" that ensued after the liberation, forged deep and long-lasting bonds of friendship between the Netherlands and Canada[35] (See Canada–Netherlands relations). In 1949, Dutch troops occupied an area of 69 square kilometres (27 sq mi) of the British zone of occupied Germany, including Elten and Selfkant, and annexed it. At that time, these areas were inhabited by almost 10,000 people. As the result of a Dutch-German agreement, signed on 8 April 1960 in The Hague, the territory was returned to Germany on 1 August 1963, except one small hill (about 3 km²) called Duivelsberg which was annexed by the Netherlands.[citation needed

Well, American football is up to the helmet with war-metaphors, and the weaponization of the players' body via the technological advancements of 'protective' body armor only strengthen those metaphors.
So the Dutch may have a point there, and there's a thing or two we as U.S. citizens could collectively learn from their society.
Last I heard, they are healthier, happier, etc. than we are, and this even though they are not nearly as materially 'prosperous' as we are. I consider myself to be a Good American, and as such, I holdfast to the belief that "he who dies with the most toys, wins".

Those Dutch bastards actually give me pause to reconsider.....

I'm not going to get too worked up about what some Dutch speed skating coach thinks about American football. We don't have to apologize to anybody for our sports passion.

And don't worry Netherlands, we'll be back, taking away some of your precious speed skating medals soon enough.

Well Wikiwhatever aside, my wife's grandfather was in-fact walking through the Netherlands during the second world war and Germany would not have retreated from the Netherlands without U.S. involvement in that war, were there more Canadians than Americans in the Netherlands? Maybe but that's drilling pretty deep. Neutral in WW1? Sure, as long as they placated the Germans. Like the Swiss in WW2, the Germans left the Netherlands alone because they needed an uncontested trading partner. Had the Netherlands told them to pound sand, they would have been occupied in name and action. Had the Germans finished the war in Europe, they'd have moved on the Netherlands like they moved on other neutral countries like Belgium and Luxemburg. No American involvement in WW2? Oh wait, those Americans buried in the American Cemetery in the Netherlands must have been post-war vacationers. American Battle Monuments Commission

Only in OC would you find a thread where a trash talking coach of a sport nobody gives two shits about, from a country most couldn't find on a map, that turns into a history dissertation on how America saved the world from Nazi tyranny.

Really just an analogy comparing the two world wars to DOT Fluid vs. Mineral Oil in Shimano Brakes. Everything else was subterfuge and codetalk.

Banned probably isn't the right word. It might be more accurate to say anything on the Olympics that doesn't come via NBC isn't allowed.
