    The OC Chess thread

OK, I've seen official OC threads on everything from Astronomy to Zoology, but I've never seen a Chess thread! I'm really not a chess nerd, but I started watching some of these videos from Mato. Most are around three minutes long, and you don't need to get totally immersed to appreciate them. Check out this vid, and see if you can guess the killer move, he gives you time to pause the vid. It's pretty cool.

I really enjoy chess, it can be hard to find an competitive opponent sometimes. A few really good documentaries out there. Of course the one about Bobby Fischer and another about the rise of Magnus Carlsen. One things for sure, I do not envy their lives.

Wife and I just finished a game on that board.
She’s been using an app on the IPad to learn and practice.
    Getting better all the time.

As for the last sentence above, there is quite a history of where some of those great minds went. Chess is like astronomy, the endless possibilities are mind bending. I remember the first time I located a Messier object, M81, is 12 MILLION light years away and its photons were tapping my retina. It is a galaxy 90 THOUSAND light years across.
    Chess is like that.

A great book for some interesting history of the game.
    Easy, enjoyable read.
    https://www.amazon.com/Immortal-Game...s=books&sr=1-1

A fresh, engaging look at how 32 carved pieces on a board forever changed our understanding of war, art, science, and the human brain.

Chess is the most enduring and universal game in history. Here, bestselling author David Shenk chronicles its intriguing saga, from ancient Persia to medieval Europe to the dens of Benjamin Franklin and Norman Schwarzkopf. Along the way, he examines a single legendary game that took place in London in 1851 between two masters of the time, and relays his own attempts to become as skilled as his Polish ancestor Samuel Rosenthal, a nineteenth-century champion. With its blend of cultural history and Shenk’s lively personal narrative, The Immortal Game is a compelling guide for novices and aficionados alike.

I love playing chess but I can't find anyone to play with. Years ago I played with two guys at work but one left and the other got bored. No one in the house is interested. I tried a local chess club but it was hopeless. They met in a golf club, you could be there all night and get two games or they'd all go to away matches and the guy running the club neglected to tell you. So you'd go over, wait for hours and no one turned up.

The game above is really nice. I love the way the best moves look so simple once you see them.

I learned watching my step dad play, then we used to play a lot.

Like others, no one ever wants to play, I was halfway decent, not sure about now.

    It's a great game.

I use Chess.com, Lichess or FICS when I feel like playing. I solve puzzles more often than playing games though.

Anyone ever play Fischer Random Chess?

    Distracted Chess....

    Where were we? Oh yeah...

I haven't played the game in years and need to. As some of you know, I've been building chess boards as gifts for the past couple of months. I just built another one for my brother and decided to attempt the pieces this time. I took a different tack...

I was looking for German car themed pieces, since my brother owns a European shop and specializes in them. I was thinking Benzes for the king and queen, Porsches for the bishops, Bimmers for the knights, Audis for the rooks and VW Beetles for the pawns, but there's nothing like that available from what I can see.

I chose hardware instead and made my own.

    Take a look.

Very cool pieces Chuck. In some subliminal way it’s as if you are telling your brother he’s nuts.

    Chuck’s Chessnuts

    Great imagination.
    Beautiful board work.

Put a star washer, tits bent up, under under the Queen’s top nut.
    (there’s a chess comment I never dreamed I’d make)

    Too funny.

Thanks guys! It was fun to create this one. I may go back and get some star lock washers and do just that. I had them on the plan in my mind, but forgot them when I went to the hardware store.

I gave this to my brother last night and he was stoked!

I play almost every day on the chess.com app. I still suck though since i refuse to study or practice. If anyone wants to friend/challenge me on the app, look me up. Same username that I use here.
