And, to quote Vale, "a great guy".
Always wondered why he didn't ride dirt.
Hoping for his recovery and to see his smile again.

He did ride dirt, that's his roots actually. Flat track to be precise.

    I know he's a flat-tracker.
I saw him at Daytona vs Mladin and Bayliss, a great race!
What I meant was why the skinny tires on tarmac- especially when dirt is in his blood.
Why wasn't he on a Stumpy?

    God, the news isn't good.

hard to say but many pro athletes use road cycling to maintain fitness though mtb could do just as well.

Yep, as phatty mentioned, I've never once heard anyone that met any of the Hayden brothers have a bad thing to say about them. I know as recently as a few years ago, Nicky would still show up at local dirt track events, just because it's in his DNA, and he loves it. I've always heard to be that high up the racing ladder, they're the most down to earth, approachable people out there.

And just because I'm a supermoto guy, and it's one of my all time favorite supermoto videos ever, here's Nicky doing what he does best.

This sucks. I hope he recovers fully. I have always had a soft spot for him. He just always seemed to be "one of the guys". His humbleness is genuine and not practiced like others. A truly good man.

Tragic news today, very talanted racer, never got to share the track with him, but spent some time chatting with him in the pits.

Really, really saddened to hear the news earlier today. Kenny Stabler said it best; "You cannot predict your final day, so go hard for the good times while you can." RIP Nicky, you will definitely be missed.

So sad. He was also my favorite road racer. I met him at Adams Motorsports track where we were riding Supermoto. It was when he had just switched from Factory Honda to Factory Ducati. I was on my Husky SMR and I was getting rear wheel hop under braking on corner entry's and I asked him what kind of slipper clutch he was using, because he was so smooth backing it in on corner entry. To my surprise, he said he was using the stock clutch, (on a stock CR450) and just feathering the clutch on his entry so he didn't get wheel hop. I had to eventually buy a slipper clutch to cure my problems. But he was very cool to talk to. I asked him how he liked his new Duc and he just said it was "different". I took it as his way of nicely saying it wasn't to his liking compared to his previous Honda. I was looking forward to seeing him develope the new Honda WSB and hopefully get the title on it. He will be missed. RIP

It doesn't seem real (in my mind anyhow) that this nightmare has taken place. Finally engaged with aspirations of family ahead and gone in a mere instant.

Yes i know these are the perils of life we live, but i find it difficult to accept.
