    The Maytag Repair Man

    Or in this case, GE.

So I'm not really much of an appliance repair man, but thank God for Google!

My refrigerator got really warm, like it lost all the freon or something. I could hear the compressor and the fan running, though. I took it all apart, and the evaporator was a solid block of ice. No air was gonna move through that. I used Susie's hair dryer to melt it all away, and now it works like new again.

I googled my fridge model number and symptom, and came across this page. Really nice step by step breakdown on how to troubleshoot it.

    Refrigerator Defrost Problem Diagnostics

Apparently, there is a system that heats up the evaporator to keep the ice off. I think this is what they call "frost-free" refrigerators. Sure enough, the heating element for the evaporator was open-circuited. Since I have it all tore down, I will replace the heater thermostat, since they are prone to failure, too, but mine is testing OK.

New fridge would be easily a grand or more, so I be pretty happy about this!

I did this exact repair on mine about a month ago.

Make sure to vacuum the coils underneath real good.

At least you know you've mastered another trade to fall back on.
Way to get after it and save some cash.

    Lol!!
I still get the creeps when I think about the episode where they were drinking wine, getting a nude bath and taking picutres. My 5 year old self was not ready for the big bad world of appliance malfunction yet.
It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.
