    Woo Hoo!

Woo Hoo! Curiosity has landed on Mars! Curiosity is the size of a car.
Curiosity was lowered from a hovering ship by a small crane, which jettisoned the line upon sensing Curiosity touching down on the planet.

the site is up but the images aren't displaying. I think only two made it from the rover before the satellites went out of view.

The image I posted came from the NASA Twitter feed.

One hour of this sucker up and running will provide new discoveries exceeding all the years of the International Space Station at a tiny fraction of the cost. When you do the risk/benefits calculation, robotic probes are the future of man's exploration.

    Bye, bye, manned space flight.

Don't take this the wrong way, Prodigal, but you strike me as someone that would say we don't need NOAA because we have the weather channel.

I will admit I'm biased with NASA as my grandfather worked in the control tower and I actually watched the last successful flight of Challenger. But, NASA has contributed tremendously to everyday life. R&D is expensive. Pushing boundaries is expensive. We all have benefited though. Here are just 10 inventions we use everyday. It doesn't count freeze dried food and tang.

To keep the Mars Curiosity rover bicycling related and avoid the political discussion that is brewing (and is against forum rules), it is worth noting that Litespeed was involved in the creation of the rover. They apparently welded the frame together.

There are other interesting tidbits here for the uninformed--

Yea i read up on that, freaking awesome! This thing has some amazing technology on it and brings up a really good point. A lot of what gets developed for this has a solid trickle-down effect to us the standard consumer over time.

If they install a Mr. Fusion unit, then they can power a Flux Capacitor and go back in time to see how much water was on mars in the past.

There is some interesting stuff being found in Egypt recently by a NASA telescope. It looks very much like Mars.

An opinion, somewhat different than your own. Can you live in a world where someone has a different opinion than your own? Can you do that without accusing them of baiting or violating guidelines? You keep using loaded words to try to get me expelled. I simply have an opinion. Accept it. Ignore my post if you are that disturbed by differing opinions.

I love technology. I could not live the way I do without it. I want more technology. I just don't think we should pay for it by borrowing money from China. That isn't how you or I pay for our gadgets. We save up to buy them. That seems like a reasonable observation to make. It seems valid to post it on this thread. It is not a political theme. It is not baiting. It is rational and reasonable to rational and reasonable people. I respect others right to agree or disagree. It is sad that one PM I received was from someone who agreed with my perspective, but was afraid to say so on the thread because the bullies with rep would crush him with negative rep. How sad is that? That is not what Gregg wanted with the rep system. People should not be intimidated or threatened if they don't fall in line with the powerful reppers. It's playground bullies gone wild. Someone named pursuiter sent me a PM telling me to STFU. This is unacceptable behavior.

Keep posting pictures or interesting articles about Curiosity. I don't mind. I enjoy the pictures. You would be wrong to think I hate the technology. I don't. I just want to see a future where you and I aren't destitute because we dreamed big without pacing ourselves within our means. Fair enough?

Imagine you were an alien race and you stumbled upon the rover. Which would think would be more exotic and representative of our technology: titanium or carbon fiber? This scenario excludes transparent aluminum since Spock has not yet given the formulation.
