    A Little Computer Help Please?

I did a Java update on one of my laptops today. Now it wont show any webpages. Nothing.
Its a Dell Windows 8 machine. If I look up programs, Java doesn't even show now.

Yes, I have done a few restarts.

    No, I don't have a back-up I can go back to (I know, I don't want to hear it....).

What do I have to do to get Java back on this computer?

This is a bit radical, but it works every time. Find the power supply. Unplug it and roll it up. Take an appropriately sized screw driver and remove the two screws holding the internal harddrive in place out. Remove the harddrive. Fold the dell closed and either find the nearest recycling bin for electronics or chuck it out into the back yard. Replace computer with a macbook pro and never have any laptop issues again.

Or, perhaps less radical, yes, use the verify java link. You could also see if you your computer has been creating backups and see if you can roll the computer back a day or two. Then try a reinstall.

Net Wurker, I've been looking at that page on a second (this) laptop. Can't figure out how I'm going to get it on to the laptop that doesn't work. It will not open any webpage.

Where did you get this "update" ? Right from the Java site? Cuz it sounds more like some kind of virus.

Go here...Java Downloads for All Operating Systems

download the "offline installer" (windows offline).....put it on a thumb drive. Use that .exe file to try installing java on the broken computer.

Another thought....run an "IPCONFIG /ALL" command and make sure you still have a valid IP address for your network. If your network card or wireless connection or whatever isn't working, neither will your browser. And honestly, broken Java shouldn't stop ALL the internet form working, just Java applets that run on the pages. Pages should still load.

Seems more like the install either broke your networking capabilities, or it was really some some kind of virus, and not a Java update after all.

Try this too....just do the "I'll fix it myself" option. You just run a command. It won't hurt anything to run this, and it MAY fix the problem id Java F'ed up your networking.

Net, I bet you are right - he installed the latest espresso instead of the latest Java.

You didn't see a popup that said, "Your Java is out of date. Click here to update"? (Popup instead of the systems tray or windows update notification)

Yeah, if it was from the system tray, it was PROBABLY legit update from Oracle.

If you clicked a pop-up on a site....guaranteed it's some kind of virus.

Ps- if you think it is a virus, disconnect your broadband connection sooner than later. You could close all applications except system monitor (forget its name) and check your network usage. You could be streaming your hard drive to Africa or China at this very moment.

Simple fix. Do a System Restore. Your machine has it. Type "system restore" in your "search programs and files" box. Choose "create a restore point". A pop up box will appear. Click on the system restore box. It will guide you through the steps. Go to a point at least one day before the issue started. Should go back to normal, but Windows may want to update for security purposes so check for that.

So if you don't roll the chord up do they charge for a recycle dropoff. Remember to rewind your VCR tapes before returning them.

I was getting the Java Update warning. I went to the Java Updater website and downloaded the update from there. My other computers are showing the same update warning now. I'm not downloading it until i get this one figured out.

Reasonably sure its not a virus. I could be wrong.

Nothing shows up when I do that search.

    No. Wireless is turned on.
This computer is the laptop I use for work. Its not a company computer so their IT dept is not going to be much help. I have a dozen different routers to ping off of at the shop. Same results on all of them. Brought it home, no internet here at home either. All my other computes work fine.
I agree that just missing Java should not kill all internet. This doesn't make any sense to me. All I know is that I did the Java Update, rebooted, then no internet and Java does not appear in the programs list.
I'll keep working on this. I have to have internet access at work.

Also , did you try the TCP reset? It takes like 18 seconds and then a reboot to try. Even if it doesn't fix anything, it won't hurt anything to try.

    Did that. No change.

Also thumb drived Java back into the affected computer. No change there either. Hhmmmm...

The Java Update has a new Java Uninstall program that removes old versions of Java. I hope it didn't erase a program it wasn't supposed to.

    Hmmm...
I'm in the camp that thinks it might not be a legitimate Java site. Only Oracle is a legitimate site to get Java.
BTW a person should still be able to get online without Java. It's just that without Java some features won't work.

    Oh yeah.
You can also look in your Browsers Add-Ons and see if a new version of Java and/or Java Deployment Toolkit got installed.

Brew, do an "IPCONFIG /ALL" command, and note the output.

Does it show you an IP address, or does it say "media disconnected" for the wireless card? And if it does show an IP address, are the first two octets 169.254???

You sure that was for the wireless card, and not a built in on-board network card? If it is indeed the wireless card, there is the problem.

You need to figure out why.

You are not connected to your router anymore.

Does it say there are connections available in the system tray, or do you not have a wireless icon?

Edit: Sounds like enough fun it'd go a lot faster with someone on the phone...

All WiFi connections show valid and active. I can connect to multiple different routers here at the shop and at home. It just will not display web pages.

The wireless connection is "similar" to a blue-tooth device "pairing". Sounds like this part is working OK then, if you are connecting wirelessly to the router(s).

The ethernet connection (TCP/IP) is what is not working. 'Media disconnected' when running the ipconfig command is telling us that for some reason, it is not establishing a TCP/IP connection. If this were a cabled connection, the obvious thing to look for would be an unplugged cable.

You need that ethernet connection in order for any kind of network connection (read, internet) to happen. If you are connected to the router wirelessly, then disregard my comment about re-installing the wireless card driver. While it is possible to have the wireless "link-up" without a TCP/IP connection, it would be impossible to get a TCP/IP connection if the wireless link is broken.

Back to fixing the TCP/IP stack.

    Found this... Maybe?

"After several hours of fooling around with MS suggestions and the attempts of others, I found that the box, "Use a proxy server for your LAN" had been checked (tools>internet options>(connections)>(LAN settings). Unchecking that box solved my problems."

also, : "clearing your cookies, your temporary internet files and your browsing history"

FB, his IPCONFIG command outputted "media disconnected".

Until this is resolved, that laptop isn't going to be able to do any network connections. Until he gets it to display something like my screen-shot above, instead of "media dissconnected", no amount of tweaking proxy servers or anything like that is going to do anything.

If he gets it to obtain an IP address, and it still won't "Internet", then yes, now it's time to start looking at bad proxies and all that kind of stuff.

IIRC, DNS server issues will often show up like this, but not as likely if you're connecting to web sites just fine through that same ISP on another computer.

    Tried a DHCP release/renew?

Brew, another quick command to try.....make sure you are running the command prompt as an administrator (right click - run as administrator)

    netsh winsock reset

    then reboot

Zowie, it seems his tcp/ip stack is corrupted.

IPCONFIG displays "media disconnected" for the wireless card.

Right, should have a 169 address if it was a DHCP issue, as you mentioned earlier.

OK Net, it sounds you it's all running again. You're the best.

    Final question:

WHAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THIS TO HAPPEN?

I ask this in case it happens to any of us sometime in the future.

I'm guessing the Java update went south, and it corrupted the tcp/ip stack in Windows. Stranger things have happened.

Glad you got it working, Brew!

This brings up an important point from a business owner's POV. Do you produce a product that never breaks but costs a lot more to purchase, or do you produce a product that won't last forever and is cheaper to buy? Who ultimately will become richer, faster???
