It's getting to be about that time. He's been getting increasingly senile over the last few years. He was at his very best way back in his days long ago at NBC.

The only late night host that will ever really matter is Johnny Carson.

    Letterman to retire

I figure he was waiting for Leno to leave the scene first. I used to love Letterman but it has seemed forced for many years.

I thought he was older... he's only 66. I have staff nurses working front line who are older! (and some are just as funny)

I guess that opens the door to Seinfeld? Louis CK? Oprah?

All these late night shows are some of the most unfunny shizzle I have ever seen. Leno and Letterman hav never been funnier than like a 4 on a 10 scale. Forced crapola. Reminds me of slapstick comedy.

Given the public has a choice what nightly entertainment moves them it's fair to say the younger gens may simply view it as you do however seeing as how it's not 100% comic relief it does fill a void for some.

I was thinking the same thing, I thought he was in his mid 70's. Lol, could you imagine the monologues if Louis CK was hosting?

The only way you would be able to stomach Letterman these last few years is if you are a flaming liberal. He went out of his way to blast anything conservative rather than make people laugh. I'm not blasting liberals but keep effing politics out of a supposed comedy show.

His political jokes seemed to be 98% anti republicans.

I'm not sure what you mean by taking over but Letterman was getting half the ratings of Leno and now the same with Fallon. And he was battling with Kimmel for last place. I liked Letterman's monologues, hated his interviewing style but I'm a long time viewer.

I think Craig Ferguson is the funniest guy on late night but I can't see him in an earlier time slot - imo he's too vulgar and weird for a wider audience.

Yeah, I'm afraid if Ferguson gets an earlier time slot, the show will have to mellow and everything that makes it so damn funny will have to go. Besides, if they move Ferguson up, what would I have to watch after Futurama at 12am on WGN. LOL

Colbert's white house correspondence dinner speech is awesome

I've never seen him do an interview where he's not making fun of, and trying to be funnier than, the interviewee. It will be interesting to see how he is as a "regular" host.

It looks like Craig Ferguson is leaving the Late Late Show. That's a bummer because he was by far my favorite late night talk show dude. He's actually funny and at the same time a pretty interesting guy. He denies it but I can't help but think he must be fairly disappointed in not getting Letterman's show.

Well if you're a fan of the Craig Ferguson show then I suggest you catch all the episodes you can. His final show will be on Friday Dec 9th. And in a totally Ferguson move Jay Leno will be his final guest. This is pretty funny because Craig relentlessly harasses Leno.

If that's true, orthopedic surgeons all over owe her one.

I dunno if Colbert is still going to take that job, but if he does, I don't understand how he can do it.

I haven't heard this, is Colbert having second thoughts on this? I will say the Late Show just doesn't seem to be his format. I wasn't completely enthusiastic about him being named the new host.

You are aware that the Colbert report is all an act, right? Steven Colbert is just as liberal as Letterman is. His character on Colbert Report is a fake. he does it to mock conservatives, not support them.

Colbert will be great replacing Letterman. He's as smart and quick-witted as anybody I've seen on television. I love his interviews on Comedy Central, but I always get annoyed by his flipping between interviewer and Conservative character. Just when an interview is getting good, he'll muck it up with a Conservative role-play joke. Without the character, I think his interviews will be the best on late-night.

    OK, yes, I know that

I've just never seen him remain "out of character" long enough to get any idea of how he is in real life.

He's a lot like the comedian Andy Kaufman and Baron Sasha Cohen in that way.

I don't understand why anyone would not have faith that a guy who is among the smartest ever to sit in front of a TV camera would have a problem. He stepped out of character at the White House Correspondents' dinner to deliver the most incredible speech to a sitting president in the history of the Republic.

Colbert was the ONLY PERSON in the country with TV access and the cojones to tell George W. Bush what the rest of us thought of him, and make him sit and listen. Who wouldn't want to give that guy a microphone as big as his balls?

You have a point, but I think he did even that in character.

I remember watching that, and how long it took the Pres. to figure out he was being insulted.

As I recall, it took a while.

Seriously, though, I welcome the prospect of Colbert taking over. I was just kidding around with the Usual Suspects of the OC.

I'm a Colbert fan - even his base personality. I'm still wary of him as a one hour interviewer though. I do worry that he will fall back into his stick which I wouldn't so much want in the Late Show format. I'm looking forward to see how he does. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of him and the Colbert Report.

Have you seen the total waste of airtime game show he is hosting now? The guy has basically nothing to do now. What a waste of personality.

I wasn't that big on the new Late Show. I will give it more chances, because I like Colbert and I like most late night shows. It might have been a mood thing, but I didn't really laugh until the fake movie bit with George Clooney. The monologue jokes seemed kinda forced and cheezy. The opening bits after the monologue seemed to revolve around product placement ads and they just weren't funny. I'm not sure if it's just me, but when I see what I think is a poorly done product placement ad, it makes it hard for me to appreciate whatever it is they're doing. I know the sabra hummus bit was a joke playing on forced product placement, but it wasn't funny. The Oreo/Trump bit may or may not have been intentional, but again, it wasn't that funny.

The band is pretty important to a good late night show IMO, and I couldn't even hear the band very well. What I could hear sounded like contemporary jazz. The leader looked attached to some weird horn/keyboard hybrid which sounded kinda like a recorder. The head band guy also reminded me of Lamar from revenge of the nerds, which I would call a positive.

I was hoping Colbert might be the late night host who asks uncomfortable and hard hitting questions, but I don't think that's how it's going to be. I recently read an article on how now that Letterman is gone, all the late night shows are pretty much happy, fluff interviews. We'll see if Colbert can be the exception.

I'm kinda mad at myself. I tuned into him several times years ago and quickly tuned out. But I recently gave him a chance and discovered why he has such a huge fan base. He's hilarious and I missed out on some good chuckles. I'll try to watch his last remaining shows, thanks for the heads up Mook.t

Ferguson was in a class all his own. I really miss him. I thought he was hilarious! As low brow as his some of his humor was I think it had an underlying sophistication and cleverness that may not have always been appreciated.

Craig isn't with us on CBS, however there is a YouTube channel called Craig Ferguson and the ladies, that is hilarious.
And of course look up anything with Craig and Robin Williams. Ferguson is one of the few that can actually keep up with Williams.

    Nice!
I blame Apple for having auto incorrect and sensitive keyboards on their iPads.

And a couple weeks ago I came across some great interviews he did.

    Has Letterman retired yet?

I think they should get Johnny Carson back in there.

Oh Hawg, you're quite the scamp. Although Carson would be better than the current crop, even at what must be a very advanced age.

Thanks for the link, I'll be checking it out. Although I may have seen many of the interviews since I watched Ferguson very religiously for pretty much the entire time he was on TV. I had a few stretches that I missed due to work, etc but other than that I was a regular.

I just realized those are videos of interviews he did with women, he definitely had a way with the girls so there should be some funny material in there.

Dang! Hawg was on the Late Show tonight!
Colbert was talking about the Lizard Man and had a video of Hawg fighting a member of the military.
