Terrapins here but I always stop and move them off the trail ... it's usually a dilemma figuring out which side of the trail to put them down on though. I wonder if they get pissed off when I put them down on the wrong side, costing them 5 minutes of walking to get back to the other side.
Chasing bears through the woods drunk with a dull hatchet is strongly not advised

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that most people have never really considered whether or
not they like/dislike turtles. That said, they should
do a little research before they off up their hard-
    earned reputation.
I love turtles and snakes and lizards and frogs and salamanders yaa yata yata. If it's a creature I love it. Just yesterday I saw 3 deer 8 Elk 2 Bighorn sheep and a fox. No turtles though, bummer.

Ok, back to the topic at hand...

I like Turtles so much that I named this line
Tortuga (before I ever even knew how much I liked
    them).

Nice line in the no bike talk off topic forum. Back to topic at hand. Turtles are hard to figure out sometimes. In otherwards they are a hard shell to crack.

Especially Snapping Turtles or their big cousin the Alligater Snapper. As a kid we used to catch Snapping turtles that were 12" - 18" in diameter. They are a mean species and can easily take your fingers off. We used to hold a broom stick in front of them and they would snap it in half with one bite.

So true! but a Snapping Turtle is a predator and will snap and bite anything. And young boys will be boys. How cool is it for a young boy to see a turtle snap a broom stick in half.

Sure you got your measurement units right Tone's, aren't Aussie metric? So that'd be 18 cm, nothing to brag about.

Who knew a turtle thread would be so popular. Turtles are cool but they piss me off when I am fishing. It's either the box turtle sliding off the log I am trying to fish making all kinds of noise. Or, the damn snapping turtles. I seem to catch them more than one should. They are a bytch to unhook. I never want to leave the hook in but that mouth is something else. I try but end up getting freaked out and cutting the line. Last month I played tug o' war with a big ol' snapper. There was a freshly dead bass floating next to shore. The turtle was trying to bite it so I grabbed the bass and dangled the tail in the water. That turtle came right up and bit a good 2 1/2 inched up the tail. It was a back and forth until the turtle chomped hard and bit cleanly through the fish. I tossed it back towards shore and he went right after it. Sorry, long story but a mean ass turtle.

I think I would get in trouble for not adding that turtles are pretty cool. Seeing as my gf did her masters on turtles. She use to poke the turtles in the nose just to make them try to snap at her. And to conferm from a turtle expert take them the way they are pointed you don't want to pass them off.

Been in the desert for 5 years, just saw my first desert tortoise. Does that qualify? He was pretty well tempered, so I guess I like them too.

My sister still has her pet desert tortoise she got when she was 2, purchased at a pet store ... she's 48 now.

A few years after she got that, we had as many as 4 desert tortoises. One was my sister's pet, one we were given by a teacher who was moving, one showed up on our street and one was brought to us by a neighbor who found it wandering around and thought it was ours. We put up "found" signs for the last 2 but had no responses. One of them had a hole drilled through the very edge of its shell, near the back leg, which we figured was for a chain or cable to keep it tied up.

Over time the other 3 either escaped or died, but my sister's "little girl" tortoise lives on. And on. And on.

Well, it ain't Nic, and it ain't turtlehawg. You'd know if it was turtlehawg, he'd be lookin for some more box turtle, or some hamwallet to go sample with a bite or a lick or two.

    Amphibians confuse me.
This monster came up into the yard from the adjacent wetland.
Extremely dense and heavy and stunk bad.
    I'm afraid of heights so a 26'r fits me to a T.

Nice!! That's one bad ass Snapping Turtle. Haven't seen one that size since leaving upstate N.Y. years ago. Pretty common to see big ones back there. But out west the big ones are more rare for some reason.

Yup--I've seen one bigger than this, but he was next.
He was so heavy that I could barely get him off the ground enough to turn him around.
Way more weighty than you would think. What occurred to me at the time was how dense he must have been.

Cool turtles for sure. I remember them frequently crossing country roads from one pond or swamp to another. Many would get hit by a car, but we always stop to check them out. And of course you have to get a stick and watch them snap it in half.

YUp--that's it. Years and years of hard work and dedication to gain the appellation deserved. Sadly, the effort fell short of the desired outcome and I was and am still unappreciated.

You could try to gain fame by turtle wrestling and maybe land your own reality series on Discovery/History/A&E.

Oh, that's funny! In reality, it's a male Russian Tortoise who is feeling challenged. He's pursuing the car to joust with it.

They can just about run on a grippy surface. It's a sight to see.

I'm trying to prove a point on searches and ads that show up. If people start posting in this thread, and doing searches on turtles, I bet we will start seeing turtle ads showing up in the side bar.

Anybody fall witness to any turtle ads in the sidebar, since this thread has been given new life? If not start Googling turtles and post them up here.

I don't like movies about guys out in the wilderness doing nothing but listening to himself aloud and throwing hygiene out the door unless they're in a spaceship or on Mars or played by Tom Hanks or chased by orcs. However, I did see first blood with Rocky and that was pretty good.

edit: I just did an unpicard and googled it. sounds like the leo decaprio movie ripped it off?

I used to know a guy who refused to brush his teeth and they were visibly rotting. After he ate, I could see chunks of food stuck in the gaps of his rotting teeth whenever he talked. He told me those are snacks for later.

I like turtles. Seems an appropriate bump to spice up the OC.

Heres a large Snapping Turtle I caught a couple of years ago. Just down the street from me I noticed an old lady in her front yard with a broom in her hand swatting at something. I slowed down and was in awe at what I saw her swatting at. I immediately knew it was a very large and very dangerous Snapping Turtle. I stopped and ran up to the soon to be scene of carnage if that snapper got a hold of her. I warned her of the danger and to stand back. I worked my way around to the back side of him and captured him by his tail. Holding him out at full arms length [I’m 6’ tall] away from my body, as he arched his long neck back and was snapping his vice like jaws at me. Coming to within 2-3” of getting my leg. I had to carry him with my arm stretched out like that and he wasn’t a lightweight to my truck. I put him in the back of bed of the truck and knowing he must have came from a series of large ponds behind the neighborhood started driving that way to release him.

As I made my way around the block and on to a country road where the ponds were, I could hear him scratching around the plastic bed liner. I looked in my right hand mirror just in time to see him up onto the truck bed rails. I quickly pulled to the shoulder and stopped at the same time he tumbled out and into the weed filled ditch. Pretty tough old dinosaur as he seemed uninjured. I recaptured him and put him back in the truck bed and hurried the remaining 200 yards to the ponds. Caught him again and released him in the biggest cattail lined pond of the bunch. The perfect home for such a specimen.

I was used to seeing large Snapping Turtles as kid in upstate NY. I knew what it was and have caught them before. Never one this big. Big enough to crawl up and over a truck bed rail. I soon learned that the females will leave the home pond and wander up to a 1/4 mile away to dig a hole and lay her eggs. She then returns back to her home pond. The babies hatch and follow their nose to a water source, many times the same pond. I suspect that’s what was going on here.

And here's a little lady (? guessing she was out looking to lay eggs) who wandered up my driveway a couple of years ago. She must have crossed a pretty busy road to get there; I'm really not sure where she would have come from. I transported her to a pond in a very wooded park. Her shell was about 9-10 inches long.

Good stuff Chaz, so cool to find a fresh hatchling snapper. There must have been others about. Did you find him on land or in the water? If on land his siblings were not far behind looking for a water source.

He was on land. Must have been headed for the nearby slow moving river. We should have looked for more, I'm not sure how anyone spotted the little guy.

I caught up with this guy last fall.

Back when we had the place on Cape Cod, my wife and I came through a loggerhead turtle sanctuary project just as they were collecting the hatchlings....It was a very cool experience.
Well my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle.
