She is one very lucky girl, that could have been so much worse had it hit the femoral artery.

Ouch. She was remarkably calm through the whole ordeal.

I've done that on a motorcycle -- brake lever into my calf. Not sure how it ended up that way, but I was stuck to the handlebars. My brother and a friend kindly yanked the handle out of my leg after debating whether to break the lever off and leave it in, remove it with tools, or what (we were about 15 miles away from camp at the time).

Funny, it didn't hurt at all when it went in. There was a wierd tingling sensation in my foot (the lever must have cut a nerve, because the outside of my foot is still without feeling 20 yrs later), but no pain and no visible blood. I tried to move my leg and could not figure out why it wouldn't come out from under the bar. Then I saw the lever going through my pants and into my skin. Pulling it out did hurt quite a bit, though!

^^^ Seen that on a motorcycle too and pegs. Though I have not had the pleasure of seeing someone's hand go through a sprocket nor do I want to, seen enough pics of that. Pretty nasty stuff. Oh and mechanical brakes for the ftw lol.

At least I learned what the ball on the end of the levers is for! I had broken it off, which I'm sure didn't help my leg any. I have been careful about replacing them every time they break ever since (bark busters help, too).
