This is a fun one featuring Steve Caballero.

Sorry, no link, but if someone can post it

    Manfred Mann's Earth Band's cover of Springsteen's....

    Blinded By The Light

That would be my fav cover. Though the Boss is the king daddy this is a cover that is better than the original.

I'm not tech savy enough to make the link happen but there is great version on The Midnight Special

I was under the assumption this thread was about songs that also double as a cover of the name of the album / CD, hence cover songs. I guess any song will do.

I listen to an "alternative music" station at work, and they have a mid day spot called "Under the Covers" where they play a song covered by another artist, yesterday it was Smashing Pumpkins covering The Cars "You're All I've Got Tonight", which made me think of starting this thread.

I just happen to know how to use Google I have heard that cover before, just a little foggy on the memory... perhaps it was the Laura Gibson version.

One more and I've gotta get to bed.

Those awesome kids are obviously at a music school, they are properly good.

I saw Post Modern Jukebox a few months ago and they are terrific. All they do is covers of modern songs in olde style and it works great. I've pre-ordered the début album by Aubrey Logan, who I think is the best singer with PMJ. Dare to disagree ;0)

OK, this version posted is a poor live attempt at the version on Disc 2 of Significant Other. If you can find an album version it is well worth the listen.

If you like covers and hearing what different bands can do to someone else's music then I strongly suggest you take your time and scroll through this playlist. We have a local, national, radio station called Triple J, it's usually a little left of main stream "pop" or commercial music stations. You may have heard of their yearly "Hottest 100" list. Anyway, they have a weekly segment called Like A Version. This youtoob chanel has most of the stuff that has been done. Some of it is crap, most of it is great and occassionally there are some absolutely knock versions done. Enjoy

And now for something a little creepy in a kind of perverse way also in step with the Little Red Riding Hood theme, how about Johnny Depp and "Hello Little Girl"

When they played Glasgow they featured a Scottish girl who'd won a competition to go over to the States and record, something like that. Anyway, she was quite a week singer to be honest. Not in the same league as the other girls.

Singers and voices can't be dissected into pitch and range. It's a matter of what ppl like and what they don't.

Actually, they can. Of course what you like is subjective, and you can prefer any singer over any other, but they can also be defined technically. And technically, if a singer has a greater vocal range, better articulation and sings off key less often they are a better singer.

She has a four-octave vocal range incidentally, which puts her into a fairly select group of singers alongside the likes of Whitney Houston etc. But it's how she chooses to use her razor-sharp speed of turn and accuracy that impresses me the most. Having the voice and having the sense to use it to serve the song are two different things. I was never a fan of Whitney Houston because she used her voice to illuminate herself, latterly anyway, while singers Aubrey Logan and Aretha Franklin put the song first.

+1, They play that a few times while I'm at work, it's growing on me.

That Africa cover was unexpected, and very... soothing.

I need to go back and listen to some of that PMJ y'all are jazzed about.

    Agreed.

I always thought the Simon and Garfunkel version needed a more powerful tone to it. It was a little too fast, and a little too "light".

What the, four pages and nothing from the greatest covers band of ALL TIME?!

Hands down the most entertaining [not best, but entertaining!] bands I've ever seen live.

I was thinking about them. I've not heard much of their stuff so I hadn't gotten to them yet. Too many I already know to post first.

Why hasn't this been posted yet?

There are times when a Finnish cello metal band from Helsinki playing Metallica songs fits perfectly!

I was just listening to some random LDR songs and this came on. I immediately liked it and thought it had a vintage sound to it. After searching the song title 'Summer Wine', turns out it's a cover of a Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood song from 1967.

Did I skim or has this one not been added yet? One great band singing another great bands song is what this is all about right?

Check out who's observing in the front row.
    Approval I would think.

Just giving you a hard time. Did you know Prince was against musicians covering others' songs? He was at one point, not sure if he changed his stance before doing some covers himself.

I've been against it for years [surprising right] until I opened my mind up a little. As long as they pay tribute to the original musicians it's all good. But remaking a song without tribute in my eyes is just theft. Even though the original musicians get royalties they should also be mentioned before or after the song. There are so many remakes these days without mention the kids coming up and hearing it for the first time think that it's an original.

The Johnny Cash cover of Rusty Cage is even better than Hurt, IMO.

Covering a song like this could go wrong in so many ways, but IMO Placebo nailed it. Even better live with Frank on vocals, their voices work very well together.

My favourite Nirvana cover; two chords, one verse sung twice, four-word chorus, punk-pop-perfection.

It's just that I've always loved that line, ever since I first read it, and I have always wanted to use it in one of my own posts.
