    Comeback

    Good News....

May sees biggest jobs increase ever of 2.5 million as economy starts to recover from coronavirus

    • Nonfarm payrolls rose by 2.5 million in May and the unemployment rate fell to 13.3%.
    • Wall Street estimates had been for a decline of 8.3 million and a jobless level of 19.5%, which would have been the worst since the Great Depression era.
    • Much of the gain came from those classified as temporary layoffs due to the coronavirus-related economic shutdown.
    • Leisure and hospitality represented almost half the jobs gained.

“The stunning gains come just three months after the U.S. had boasted a 3.5% rate, the lowest in 50 years, then saw that erased in an instant. The U.S. economy had been enjoying the longest expansion in its history but had to go into almost complete lockdown due to stay-at-home orders issued across the country.”

    Let’s hope it continues.....

The 30-stock Dow jumped more than 700 points, or 2.7%. The S&P 500 traded 2.2% higher,. The Nasdaq Compositeadvanced 1.7%. The Nasdaq-100, which tracks the 100-largest nonfinancial companies in the composite, rose 1.4% to a record high.

Friday’s rally put the S&P 500 down just 1.6% for 2020. At one point this year, the broader market index was down 30.3% for this year. The Dow was only down 5.4% year to date after being down as much as 34.6% in 2020. The Nasdaq Composite is now up more than 8.7% this year.

It all smoke and mirrors with the stock market being propped up by the fed. I'm up over 100% on my cruise line stocks. They certainly haven't increased their profits since March. So why the increase?

A positive sign for sure, but wasn't it anticipated? I mean, not everyone was permanently laid off. Most were just furloughed until measures could be put in place and businesses reopened with a plan to move forward.

I think the expectation was for it to have been in the opposite direction (see 2nd bullet in OP).

However, there's still uncertainty in real unemployment numbers:

U.S. labor market unexpectedly improves, but recovery expected to be a slog

The Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, which compiles the employment report, also noted a continuing problem with misclassification by respondents, which lowered the unemployment rate last month. A large number of people classified themselves as being “employed on temporary layoff” instead of “unemployed on temporary layoff.”

Without the misclassification, the May unemployment rate would have been about 16%.

Not helping us any. My wife's hair salon is basically on lock down since the downtown Scottsdale area has been shut down to accommodate protesters..... Someone drove a truck int the bar right next to our building last night only minutes after we left.

I had no doubt, this entire thing is a just a big "PAUSE BUTTON" it is not a depression or recession.

Now, I don't think it is going to go back to what it was anytime soon, but it will come back as things open up and people can get back to work.

I am curious how the unemployment agencies are going to handle things. I went to my barber yesterday and she told me her employees who run the other chairs are not coming back yet because they are still getting unemployment.

If an employer informs their employee who is furloughed that their job is ready for them to come back and they choose to not go back.... what happens?

They will continue to draw the checks until and unless their employer takes action.
By law, if they refuse a return to work, UE stops.
If they do not return, they quit, and that is not covered by UE insurance.

Because our country was kicking ass before COVID-19 and we want it back to that level asap. It's that simple. If you try to think any harder about it, you're just causing yourself needless distress.

Some of the jobs gained back in May could be short-lived, if the Paycheck Protection Program isn't extended or companies utilizing it to bring workers back can't generate enough revenue to keep them after another month or so.

May's jobs report stunner: real deal or head fake?

An economic comeback will have many small to medium companies not able to have handled the “pause” and having folded. Many, many people will still not have work, the unemployment numbers will likely taper to a significantly higher level before the CV shutdown. The government is going to be subsidizing the economy for a few years, with an attending huge increase in the federal deficit. That’s going to require a few years of smart economic planning that I do not foresee within the current political climate.

    Hol' up:

Here’s why the real unemployment rate may be higher than reported

The unemployment rate fell to 13.3% in May, according to a Bureau of Labor Statistics report on Friday.

The agency admitted the real unemployment rate likely exceeds 16%.

That’s due an error in how furloughed workers were treated in the data sample. April’s unemployment rate would have been nearly 20% absent that same error.

What country do you live in? Or you must be part of the 1% because the rest of the United States is dying. In my state food insecurity for children stands at almost 20%, purchasing power for minimum wage workers is down 17% since the last federal minimum wage increase and the opioid crisis created by drug manufacturers who wiil never go to prison has killed over 210,000 people.

What does all that even mean?
    It’s absurd.
Show me how a collapsed economy, and slaughtering hogs is the seed bed for racial and social justice?

    That’s funny.

I’m in the bottom 99% and I was laughing just like that all the way to the bank when the markets closed Friday.

Many would argue that if you have money in the market, even if it is in your 401k, you are far from the bottom of that 99%. Of course I don't know your personal circumstances so no need to take my comment as fact.

True, and some take from others and work hard, take it from wherever they can get it. TP shortage comes to mind. Some dogs will gladly share their bone while others rip your hand off for looking at it. The moral to the story we’re seeing play out here is that even good natured dogs can turn mean if continually smacked down, or if there’s a knee on their neck. At some point it turns from envy, or whatever reality you make up in your mind, into survival

That 'envy' thinking was first injected into the Rich white thought stream through, of all places, the pulpits of the evangelical churches. The right-wing advocating ones.

And confiscating what someone else has worked for, to give it to those you decide need or deserve it, while skimming your manager’s fee to feather your own nest,........ is diabolical......

Unemployment in Black underprivileged sectors reached historic lows in 2019. Converting orchards to firewood is not a good plan. The warm feeling it provides is short lived and followed by an agonizing starvation.

America will come through these trials better and stronger.

Maybe it's this damn amnesia but I don't remember advocating any of that. A system that works for more people and couldn't be influenced with lobby dollars sure would be nice though.

Fair nuff, but the wealth tax was a small portion of the article. I mainly posted that just to highlight how few people control how much wealth. Honestly I could have vetted that better or selected a different article to do that without suggesting solutions per se.

    Time will tell.
Speaking of comebacks and recovery, I'm sitting here in my oppressive socialist island on the eve of all internal Covid-19 related restrictions being lifted; as of tomorrow the only thing that will remain is the heavily restricted entry (essentially a closed border) into the country. The government has confiscated large amounts of our money to carry out all manner of diabolical schemes like investing in road and rail infrastructure projects to help reinvigorate our economy. Hopefully once Emu26 and his lot get their act together we'll be able to go to the Goldy for a holiday once more while they come here and marvel at snowy mountains and Hobbit Holes. Will be interesting to see how it plays out over the coming months.

Man we are good to go but forget Queensland, NSW is the place to be. 11 days now since any community transmission in NSW, a handful of new cases but all have been returning travellers. Queensland had another new case yesterday, and they are the ones that closed their borders to NSW, Vic and the ACT.

That's good news! Hows Tassie doing? TBH that's about the only place on the West Island I'm really keen to visit. (nothing against the rest of your wonderful country, I'd love to explore the whole damn place on day, just with a young family travel is hard work and expensive right now so I'm super picky about where I'd like to go)

For a guy who poses as an intellectual you certainly hold onto some archaic philosophies. I'll give you an analogy you might be able to understand: A few million years ago a bunch of cave people are sitting around the fire gnawing on a dinosaur and becoming annoyed because one greedy cave person is eating more than any other and taking more for later even though his cave is full of jewels and vegetables. The group asks the greedy cave person to reduce his unnecessary consumption so the less able amongst them will have food, the greedy cave person thumbs his hairy nose at the group and takes more for himself. The cave people have tried to be reasonable but this greedy cave person holds fast to his unjust bounty and proclaims he'll fight to keep his gluttonous ways, so the cave people feed him to the crocodiles.

    Here is another story
Two cave men are back from hunting, they harvested a large animal and now are sitting around the fire, feasting on their hard earned meal.

The next day one decides he doesn't want to hunt, it's tiring and he might get hurt. He stays home. The other goes for a hunt, come back tired with a smaller size animal. He is tired from hunting by himself, out of energy, but the lazy one wants his half. The hunter says, wait a minute, I hunted this, I used a lot of energy, you did nothing

The next day, the tired hunter says, I'm not hunting, I'm tired from doing all the work and I haven't gotten enough to eat. Worn out, he says home. Neither gets a meal, the lazy one complains all night. The next day, the hunter, hungry, gets up, hunts down a small meal and takes it back to a new cave and enjoys his meal in peace.

How bout if leaders of this caveman land control how many animals there are to catch, or tell you were you can hunt, and give more fruitful places to hunt to cavemen who give the leaders more. Then take their share of your catch to fund this endeavor.
How long before the cavemen band together and say enough.

    And here is another story:

Two boys are born and grow up, one on the edge of the forest and one in the heart of the forest.

I'll let you fill in your own details as to how this story goes on. But the main thing is that all of these stories are true but, they are all not true in all cases, especially BF's. Anyone who is successful got there by a combination of hard work (very often), good fortune/luck/blessings (always) and (sometimes) by taking advantage of others.
This post is a natural product. Variances in spelling & grammar should be appreciated as part of its character & beauty.

    Didn’t know that.

Now, review the fall in World Poverty.

Over the course of the last generation more than a billion people left the most destitute living conditions behind. Can we expect this progress to continue over the coming decade? The world economy is growing. In less than a generation the value of the yearly global economic production has doubled.1

The market is up 17% since that article came out, not saying isn't not true...just that the stock market doesn't care. Everyone is jumping in to ride the wave

The market has become more disconnected with economy. Pretty sure I remember you humming that tune a few times. Was one article on a fraction of the issue.
In plain English pretty sure anyone with a brain can conceive the economy will bounce back but it won’t be a ‘V’ , more like a check mark. Depending upon future virus impacts, and chaos brought upon by lack of leadership

Then there’s the interests of all the other competing tribes, and the whole tribal warfare thing.

Tassie is doing OK now that they have those hospital and nursing home "outbreaks" under control, although they have closed state borders as well so we might be waiting a little while.

Derby is very tempting, but will be even better when the epic day rides out to the coast are finished. Don't forget Maydena

Dad and I had a conversation about this back when the work from home stuff started.
“They are going to realize how many non essential middle managers they’ve been paying to do nothing all these years.”

    https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/j...224443437.html

"What people may have learned for white-collar services jobs, in particular, during the work-from-home lockdown situation, at least in my perspective — I've talked to a lot of my peers on this — I kind of learned who was really doing the work and who was not really doing as much work as it looked like on paper that they might have been doing," Gundlach said.

Old gig might be up for a lot of folks.

I think you're dead right about that, I think anyone who has worked long enough on the metaphorical shop floor for a large company with a booming middle-management sector will agree.
