9/11 happened when I was studying meteorology in college. With all the commercial and private air traffic canceled for three days my professor and some of his colleges studied the affects of air traffic contrails (not chemtrails) and the effects of cloud formation. unfortunately I never heard the results.

Setting up for the Aug 21, 2017 solar eclipse. Didn't get squat for that, unfortunately. My tripod is not a good setup for sky photography, and I spent too much time fiddling for the right angle, and not enough time figuring out the camera settings for good pics.

I do remember reading an article about that some time ago. The shutdown of air traffic afforded an opportunity to study the effects of contrails on Earth's surface temperatures.

From what I can recall, warming increased without the presence of the contrails reflecting out incoming solar radiation.

However, air travel does emit very significant volumes of greenhouse gases which may offset any reductions in solar radiation over time.

No, but, do you really want another ďwe the humans are killing the earthĒ thread? I think the OP has enough of those already. Itís up to us as a group to turn these threads around from the get go instead of feeding into this BS that doesnít belong anywhere on a site like this.

Go here and check out the threads heís started and heís kept feeding. All political bullshit. The mods turn a blind eye to it for some reason.

If that is the case, I have to give him some credit in Boris being a character and not his actual personality. Boris really didn't seem bright enough to disguise his behavior as a new member; if it was all an act, he had me fooled (maybe that's not hard to do). He posted a lot about his past, but a lot of it was deleted as he tended to berate others when he did, but I saw the posts and remember a good bit of them. There was someone around who figured out who Boris actually was, as in knew the guy. Though those two are annoying, I don't think they are anywhere near as offense as Boris was, and not just in that one thread.

The sport is regulated but pretty much polices it's self. If someone that exited before you is below a cloud under canopy and you come bombing through and collide it will ruin your day.

What are the main findings of the MA?

Over the past 50 years, humans have changed ecosystems more rapidly and extensively than in any comparable period of time in human history, largely to meet rapidly growing demands for food, fresh water, timber, fiber and fuel. This has resulted in a substantial and largely irreversible loss in the diversity of life on Earth.

The changes that have been made to ecosystems have contributed to substantial net gains in human well-being and economic development, but these gains have been achieved at growing costs in the form of the degradation of many ecosystem services, increased risks of nonlinear changes, and the exacerbation of poverty for some groups of people. These problems, unless addressed, will substantially diminish the benefits that future generations obtain from ecosystems.

The degradation of ecosystem services could grow significantly worse during the first half of this century and is a barrier to achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

The challenge of reversing the degradation of ecosystem while meeting increasing demands for services can be partially met under some scenarios considered by the MA, but will involve significant changes in policies, institutions and practices that are not currently under way. Many options exist to conserve or enhance specific ecosystem services in ways that reduce negative trade-offs or that provide positive synergies with other ecosystem services.

The bottom line of the MA findings is that human actions are depleting Earthís natural capital, putting such strain on the environment that the ability of the planetís ecosystems to sustain future generations can no longer be taken for granted. At the same time, the assessment shows that with appropriate actions it is possible to reverse the degradation of many ecosystem services over the next 50 years, but the changes in policy and practice required are substantial and not currently underway.

Caused by classic cooling aloft. Not global warming. The next few weeks will be rough. Then cooling takes over the entire picture, not just aloft, for the remanded of March. Thatís what iím seeing

Yeah, science is confusing. Maybe these pics will help you. Notice how the tornadoes that tungstenís pic shows are right at the cold warm boundary. This is what we have now
    Clouds-4f5af0e8-98ae-4a00-a1f1-d938d3cb6570.jpg

This is whatís predicted next 2 weeks or so
    Clouds-9520f7c6-e830-435b-8840-37cd281ad110.jpg

The boundary between warm and cool is the fuel for storms and tornados, and what we have here in top photo is classic springtime tornado season

25 years ago in VA I played a round of golf in that very scenario. Had never seen green skies before.

My wife lived in Missouri for a few years growing up. She said when when you saw green clouds be prepared. I've seen that a few times here in Phoenix but we don't get the usual tornado following it.

I'll have to find my other pics from the last time in Hawaii. Was fishing off the dock at night and a thunderstorm came in with the most amazing deep blue lightning. No pics of the lightning but cool shots.

yeah...golfing around here is pretty challenging in that aspect...from April on, you either start at 5:30 am to get a round in before the afternoon storms come in, or you go out after 5pm if you can.

I only golf in the fall and early spring anyway to avoid the weather, the heat, and the people

Upon closer inspection on a bigger screen, that is the Kissing Camels formation. The angle is slightly different than I am used to seeing and I was looking on my phone. Google "Kissing Camels Colorado" for some other photos that show the camels better. They are a smaller part of the whole monolith along the top, left of center.

That is hilarious. I can no longer see the kissing camels, all I see is Spewing Baby. I'll start the petition for the name change immediately. Lol.

On Saturday I had to try really hard to find a cloud. After some determination I found one though.

I wonder how much of this is also due to people building too close to, or over water, that they shouldn't be, just b/c technology allows them to feel "safe" or impervious to this natural ebb and flow of seashore.

and just FYI, I 100% believe that climate change is happening...I am not a denier, but I always wonder how people can build so close to water, and not expect it to bite them in the ass...

Probably should be "Spewing up baby" or "Spewing forth baby", that way you get the mental image of a mom expelling her baby from the wrong end.

Found it on a free wallpaper download site. I don't know where it was taken, and can't vouch for how much is real vs. PS or CGI. But google "supercell" for other examples.

Nairobi, Kenya, 13 March, 2019 Ė The most comprehensive and rigorous assessment on the state of the environment completed by the UN in the last five years was published today, warning that damage to the planet is so dire that peopleís health will be increasingly threatened unless urgent action is taken.

The report, which was produced by 250 scientists and experts from more than 70 countries, says that either we drastically scale up environmental protections, or cities and regions in Asia, the Middle East and Africa could see millions of premature deaths by mid-century. It also warns that pollutants in our freshwater systems will see anti-microbial resistance become a major cause of death by 2050 and endocrine disruptors impact male and female fertility, as well as child neurodevelopment.

No signs of #Snowpocalypse yet here on the west side. Just raining and dreary. I have to imagine the ski resorts are getting pounded right now.

Pretty! Any chance this photo was taken at Theodore Roosevelt Lake? I recall blue roofs over the picnic tables there. My GF & I camped there last month (Feb. 2019) while on a snowbird trip to the desert.

That pic was from yesterday evening. I'm at Union and Circle and it's windy as hell but very little snow as of yet. Had a few power glitches but it hasn't dropped out yet.

We were hoping to ski Loveland tomorrow, but not sure we'll be able to get there.

We are getting pounded by wind here in FoCo and the snow started around 9am. Our grill just blew off the deck.
This is the first time in 13 years in this house that we've had wind strong enough to blow the grill off the deck.

Be safe out there. There was an in-bounds slide there when I was at Keystone last weekend.

A friend patrols at Loveland. They had to wear beacons in bounds while working this past Sunday.

A-Basin closed early today because of avy danger on the road. They have already received 125% of their March average.

    Back on topic:
Sunrise clouds from yesterday's dawn patrol ride.
Had to squeeze in a ride before today's blizzard arrived.

Itís been a tough one. Went to work at 4:30am and the winds were so high it was pouring rain sideways. By 10am it was snowing and it still hasnít stopped. Serious winds with constant 45mph and gusts up to 60mph. About 7Ē of snow in my area, not the fluffy snow which Colorado is known for. An icy wet slushy snow like what they get back east. Weíre still in a blizzard warning but itís supposed to clear out by Friday. Semi trucks blown over and toppled trees. Huge power outages, luckily not in my neighborhood. As you said DIA shut down as well as many other businesses.

By the way just 15 miles up the canyon from me they had 75 mph winds.

Senate Republicans recently voted to confirm former coal lobbyist Andrew Wheeler as the permanent administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Though tasked with protecting Americansí health and environment, Wheeler is instead attempting to force through a deadly plan to weaken lifesaving protections from mercury pollution.

Mercury is poison, and Wheelerís scheme is a poison plan.

Mercury is a potent neurotoxin that can cause permanent brain damage to infants and children exposed to mercury in the womb, including long-term impacts on their memory, cognitive functioning, language and fine motor skills. Wheelerís proposal would undermine lifesaving safeguards that are effectively limiting the amount of mercury pollution from power plants. By pursuing this deadly agenda, he is jeopardizing the health and well-being of millions of Americans.
