    Barber prices up 25%

I called around a few places that just opened up. Looks like their prices went up to 18-20 bucks per cut. Prior to the shutdown, they were about 13-15. Not sure about hair salons.

Have you experienced the same thing where you are? Do you think this will be the new standard, or will it relax back down soon?

I got an ex-gf to cut my hair a couple times since the shops shut down. She did a nice job. All it cost me was to cook dinner for her, which I would have done anyway. I may never go to a hair salon again.

I'm usually out the door with a tip at $20. Sometimes its a good cut, sometimes its not so good. I'm always wearing a hat or a helmet though.

my wife wouldn't touch my hair...haven't had a cut since Feb, I think. surprisingly, the only thing that looks bad about it this way is that the edges need cleaned up. it feels awful, though. I have thick hair and it feels like I'm wearing a wool beanie all the time right now.

the guy who cuts my hair is still working on his reopening plan, so I don't know if he's raising his prices or not. I usually spend $25 out the door (with tip). I wouldn't be surprised if he does raise his prices, though. cost of living (mostly food) is going up, and there are additional safety requirements barbers/stylists have to follow in order to do business.

I got fed up with inconsistent haircuts awhile ago, so I tend to shop around until I find someone I like, and then I'll stick with that one person long term. I stopped going to those supercuts chain type places when it seemed like no matter what I asked for, all they ever gave me was a high-and-tight military cut.

In most of CA the barber shops will be opening imminently.

I'm OK with what I expect to be ~ $5 increase over pre-COVID. If it is, I'll tip normally. If it's the same as before, I'll tip more. Gotta help get these small businesses.

I luckily got a pretty short cut before I went backpacking in the desert, right before all the shutdowns occurred.

I figure I'm at least a week away before my hair is long enough to cover my eyes and then another week before gravity makes that a preferred position.

    I refuse to use "product."

Got my hair cut on the last day possible here. I got back in 3 days after they opened.

My barber has not raised his prices. But he told me he had a few clients that went out and got haircuts during the shutdown. One guy paid $70 for him and his son. My usual cost is $45 for my son and I with a tip.

Must be nice. If I called up my ex girlfriend I am sure she would have a psychotic sh¡tfit episode.

Haven't gone to a barber since I started shaving my own head. Last I remember it was $10 and I would tip $5.

After what they all went through a $5 increase seems entirely reasonable. I only go once or twice a year now but I've gone to the same shop for 25 years. I'll pay $50 if they ask for it.

wife and I cut each other's hair this time. it was not that hard. I had her basically shave my head down on the sides with a #2 shield and just scissored the top a little shorter than it was. turned out pretty sharp.

What I meant was; he'll have 75% of his clothes off, but I think a pink speedo would be more like 80-85%.

I've been trying to up my self-cut game, only watched a few of these and I'm almost ready to go for it. I did the #4 all over last time and follow up edging. I like the fade into nothing on the back, gonna try it I think.

I go to an old-school barber. Barbers are currently shut down in my county, but rumor is, "speakeasy" haircuts are (still) $7. Any style you want as long as its a 'High & Tight.'
A shave (straight razor, hot towel, hot cream, etc., ) will cost an extra $5. I HIGHLY recommend if you've never gotten a shave by a real barber, you get one. I'm afraid that that service is becoming a thing of the past.

I have been doing my own hair for a couple of decades now. Best investment I made was a good clipper: Wahl Classic 76 with a couple of heads (https://www.amazon.com/s?k=wahl+clas...f=sr_nr_p_85_1). They have gone up considerably since I last check, I got mine for $100 plus some extra blades but since then I have only replaced the switch since I dropped it and I use it for both my hair and my son's now as well.

Best investment a man who cuts his own hair can make. Especially nice if you are losing hair and just want to go simple anyway. Just trim it up, you are done, no money, no time, and clean cut head. Drives my wife crazy that I do it myself but frankly it never looks any different than when I go to a barber and doesn't require me to go at during my lunch, or now during the lockdown.

edit: better location to order from if you are interested: classic 76

Yes, thanks! My current dept store Wahl wasn't cutting so good last time I cut, so I was thinking of getting a new one until I examined it closely; it was pretty gunked up in the cutting teeth, guess I didn't pay attention to cleaning it properly over the years. I will see how it cuts and decide if I want to buy a new one, just kinda hard to justify spending a buck-fiddy on clippers, maybe they have new blades for my budget model?

After the financial duress they endured, I'd say 25% increase would be perfectly acceptable. Many haircutters almost went into homelessness.

Nice to see so many here will be increasing their tips by 25% of the original pre-government forced shutdown total and tip....

I'll probably tip higher the first visit back because of this thick mop I've got going on.

@Korn: I watched that video, or one like it, and thought at first "this looks really easy." But I only made it through the first 2 phases of fading with the #4 and #3 shields. Ain't nobody got time fo dat.

After I did mine a few weeks ago with the #4 it felt great, didn't look too bad either! Now it seems like it's time for another cut and there's no way I'm making an appointment when I can just repeat what I've already done, I just want to take it to the next level, I think I just need to find the right video.

I was just chatting with Nurse Kylee about this very thing yesterday! She told me if I can hold out just a little while later, 2 to 3 weeks, I will reap the benefits of $4k a pop chemo treatments, and get my free, all-included, no strings attached and very desirable "Chemo Cut"!!! As a Monthly special they throw in eyebrows and lashes! The fun never stops!!!
