    Almonds

I read an article on California-grown almonds the other day, and there were some things in there that shocked me.

In the worst drought since they began keeping records in 1895, water used by almond production could supply 75% of California's population.

With business booming globally, especially in China, almond farmers continue to plant trees in spite of the drought. We're using precious water so we can send almonds to China?!!? Wtf?

A single almond kernel takes 1.1 gallons of water to produce.

Some have this idea that the water we use is gone forever but that is far from the truth. What we need to boycott is bad information.

    Ya mean ammans?

Tripped me out to hear 'em called that on a recent visit to Chico, CA.

The sad part is: So. Cal is siphoning off an obscene amount of water from the North; pissing it away on massively over developed real estate, elaborate landscaping, pools, etc.

Partly correct, most of the farms in the central valley are corporate owned, tax payer subsidized and sell most of their product to China.

I like some of their music, particularly "Whipping Post" and "Ramblin' Man". But if they're wasting water I'll boycott Gregg's upcoming tour.

It's a shame to admit it, but I didn't know what that meant until I saw the movie "Face Off" with Cage and Travolta.

Yes, it's true, I watched that movie.

Oh great! Here comes the better nut debate. What's it gonna be? Are people going to prefer the faster rolling performance of the almond? Or the higher stability of the cashew?

I eat almonds regularly and if you ban the almond you must ban all nuts. And if you ban all nuts you must ban all fruit. And if you ban all fruit you must ban all vegetables. And if you ban all vegetables you must ban all meat. If you ban all meat you must ban all fish. If you ban all fish you must ban all dairy. If you ban all dairy what do we have left. Don't ban the almond.

It's obvious that Finchy has never had dark chocolate covered almonds. Quite possibly the best snack available to mankind. Add some vanilla ice cream and you may as well skip sex for the night.

It's a well know fact, that more than 85% of CA water resources go to farming and industry. The state is going dry from too much greed.
Water rationing directed at the population only allows more water to go to farming and industries that use mega water.
It's greed in the form of greatly increased water rates as well. That is supposed to help water rationing, but the rates never drop after a drought ends.

You would overflow your blender. Each almond = 1.1 gallons. No way you have a blender that big.

That sounds almost as stupid as the driest continent on earth growing a crop that requires the most water, rice, just so we can export that to China as well. Yes we are world leaders in the efficiency of water used per kilo of product produced but that doesn't change the fact it uses water that is better suited for other purposes.

As a 4th generation Californian, I can say it's the root of the really violent sports rivalries in CA.
Also; My family on my mothers side have roots in growing fruit orchards in the Santa Cruz mountains. My grandfather was totally disgusted with the amount of water valley fruit farmers use. They over irrigate using a method called Flood Irrigation, so their fruit weighs more at market. It also results in tasteless, mealy, fruit...

4 KG of water is about one gallon. So I'm not sure that using a gallon of water to make a hamburger compares to using a gallon of water to produce a single freaking almond kernal.

Nonetheless, I'm a vegetarian, so I of course don't eat hamburgers. But I'm not sure that stat implies the OP would be obligated to boycott hamburgers if he boycotts almonds.

And didn't you know that Niagara is Canada stealing water from From the US?!? Def turn it off or between that and almond farming, there'll be no water left here!

Also, another obvious answer is to ban cows, and just drink almond milk and eat nut burgers. It takes 5200 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of beef, and up to 2000 to produce a gallon of milk... and those cows fart a lot, thus increasing the global warming thing...

    Mmmm, nut burgers!

I live in Ammen country, Central Valley CA.
There are 100s of canals all over the valley moving water to all the Ag needs through out the valley. The water comes mostly from Lake New Melones in my area, HUGE amounts of water in that lake and it does look 1/2 empty last time I was up there.
I don't think the Ag in the Valley has anything to do with CA water shortage and along side the Almond orchards are other food crops like tomatos...TONS of tomato trucks hauling...one year on my commute home one of the truck overturned on the freeway spilling tons of tomatos all over the hwy..
I have no idea what the Ag in Cali can or can't do about the drought?
We need lots of rain to fill our reservoirs...stop growing FOOD is not the answer. THe prices would sky rocket even further than they have...shoot a gal of milk is now $3.75 + Just last year it was $2.25...

Most food grown in California is sent overseas. It is indeed greed on a giant scale.
No one said to stop growing food Burt... but they keep expanding corporate farming way beyond the U.S.s needs, to make a giant profit overseas. The people here are once again paying the price.
They do use more than 85% of the water in the reservoirs in CA. Like I said before, part of my family were farmers. They know this crap.
They also told me, the corporate farms get too much water allocated , then the jerks sell it back, for millions of dollars. If they don't use it, to bad, they shouldn't be able to sell an invisible asset.
The rest mostly goes to L.A.
Most of the water in Lake Mead also goes to L.A. and farming in the Imperial Valley. It's funny to listen to delusional L.A. tourists blame S. Nevada for the water shortage. We're the only ones to cut our water use by over 30% (despite growth) and we always got the smallest share in Acre Feet of water.

With business booming globally, especially in China, almond farmers continue to plant trees in spite of the drought. We're using precious water so we can send almonds to China?!!? Wtf?

A single almond kernel takes 1.1 gallons of water to produce.

    Boycott almonds!
You think water is precious?? Ever heard of "the ocean"??

Get some desalination plants and use as much as you like. I soviet russia they built nuclear powered desalination plants!! In soviet russia!!! and they eat gravel and vodka there.

(I actually Swyped 'rescind' but Swype picked 'refund'. *shrug* that works.)
