No riding for me today. Morning - snow/slush, drizzle, foggy. Afternoon - yard work & some future work related sh*t. At least I pretty much finished the wheel last night. It might need a bit more tension, I'll see after a few rides.

Cheers !!! We are very lucky here to have really cool mtb trails on our doorstep.

In the next few years these bikes are going to explode.... some of you will own one soon, they are way too much fun to keep under wraps forever. I bough one to do some beach rides and for a laugh, next thing ive sold my 429 and got another fatty

Yup. 60fps is what I use, and that eliminates most of the rolling shutter jello-vision effect that you get with 30fps.

30fps is better on helmet or chest mount footage, because the body acts like suspension and isolates the camera from much of the jarring motion it gets when mounted on the bike.

What he said, although it also takes technique to descend well too. This is why I suck at mtb descents. Here's proof of that from earlier in the year. This was my first ride on the South Fork American River Trail (SFART ), and my first experience with switchback descents on a 29er. I felt like I had to crawl around every corner.

This was recorded with the GoPro HD Hero 960 on the chest mount.

Borderlands was insanely slick today, every rock was like riding on ice, hit it dead on, or get deflected.

Here's some more footage from that ride. I posted this to show why I'm careful on singletrack descents...

"Freight train, freight train, freight train", as my friends would say about what I sound like on climbs . Got that from one friend who was teasing me after I climbed Kingsbury Grade on my HardRock years ago. I told him it wasn't a really hard climb and he got a shyt eatin' grin and said "bullshyt, bullshyt, freight train, freight train, tongue sticking out". I laughed my ass off!

I do love my bar ends! Been using them ever since I got into mountain biking in the early 90s. My first mtb was a Specialized HardRock. Back then I got the black anodized Control Stix that fit inside the bar like a quill stem. Then I got my metallic purple Rockhopper and got the purple anodized bar ends that fit on the ends of the bar like all the current ones.

I was being just a little bit of a wiseass. Both climbing and descending require strength and skill. Climbing obviously requires more effort, but there is more potential for injury descending. I've fallen a lot more going up, but gotten hurt a lot more going down. As for your downhill switchbacks, freighttrain, they're scary plain and simple. If the terrain is steep enough to require a switchback, it's steep enough to cause serious injury if you blow the turn, and that's where your self preservation kicks in. None of us wants to get hurt.

I know this doesn't even come close to all the badassery posted in this thread...but it's all I got for now.Until I have the time (and motivation) to travel to some better trails,I will be cruising my newly converted rigid one speed around my local bike paths and trails.

I lurked around the singlespeed forum for a while and wondered about all the hype.I finally decided to go for it and after my first ride,I realized all those SS riders aren't crazy...It is everything they claim!

Oh...and it's such a nice color too

Badassery is in the eye of the beholder, Cornfield. Nice bike, and SS too. The beauty of SS is in the simplicity. Find some hills, it'll make you strong, when it starts getting easier, steepen your gearing. Strength, speed, and momentum, name of the game in SSing.

Question, who here has massive thighs? Just went to the store to buy some pants. Purchased the size of what I've been wearing lately. The old ones must have stretched out to fit. I needed to go up four sizes just to be able to fit in the legs. I'm actually quite pissed about it......

I'd say the quality of your video's is damn good in 720p, as is the chunky goodness of your terrain there in AZ... BTW, where in AZ are you riding? Looks like an early AM video shoot... is this Phoenix Mountain Park?

Hutch Sidious, either you're still growing, you've gained weight, or you're riding 30-50 miles a day on a bike with tough gearing?? Which one(s) is it?

The only other consideration is the "cut" of the pants? Maybe "skinny" jeans style is not for you???

I've got large legs and have torn many pants and boxers by squatting. Loose fit is the way to go, especially if you don't want to show off your package.

TMI dude

After I had been SSing for a while I noticed my pants became a little tighter around the thighs & butt and loosened a little in the waist. No badassery here, though... legs still looked like a long-distance runner's -- assuming that runner is some sort of bird

Since my injury/surgery, though, I've had quite a bit of atrophy in the one leg -- so much so that I can touch the tips of my middle fingers if I wrap my hands around mid-thigh. And I can't do a single 10-lb extension with that leg. It's going to be a long road back to mashability.

I just came out of PT/rehab for my injury about 2 months ago. I know what you mean but I'm living proof that if you work hard at it (but don't over do it) you'll be back to "normal" faster than you think.

Shorts, baggy short, really baggy sweat pants. As far as weight, I'm still up around 230-235. It's winter and as much fun as it is riding in 20-30degree temps I've been working out my legs a lot. The problem is that it doesn't matter if I do high reps/low weight or high weight/low reps my muscle bulks up bigger than before. I have tree trunks for legs. You've seen this pic but I tried to brighten it so you can get a better look. Don't get on me about the fupa. We're working getting rid of it as well as dropping the weight. I'm working on a Gym membership to have a warm place to run because of the knee problem. This should help the weight drop some more as well. Hopefully cut some of the size down too.

The "all about bikes only thread" in the "no bike discussion" forum page-4237_n.jpg

My legs are bigger now but it helps my riding for me. Though my body isn't built for MTBing. It's built to be a fullback.

Split my favorite cargo pants that semi-fit today. No joke. Now I have a nice rip in the thigh.

You should try go ride in some slim cut jeans for shlts and jiggles.

_____

So next thing. I'm at the LBS cause I forgot when ordered some grips. Long week and it's only Tuesday. Driving the LBS dude nuts going over road bikes I had an epiphany. Originally wanted just to get a nice road bike but there's this one MTB that kept catching my eye every time I walked in. So I noticed the price. 750$ for a Monocog Flight 29er. Hopefully, no one picks it up before I get my chance. Pic below of actual color at the store.
The "all about bikes only thread" in the "no bike discussion" forum page-2012_redline_monocog_flight_29er.jpg

So... why go all out when I can get two nice bikes instead of spending $2200+ for just a rode bike? For me that's a lot of cash to chuck up after I just dropped coin on the Superfly. Thus this brought me to the conclusion I should get the two bikes instead of just one. That way I'll have three. The other bike is a Spec. Allez Sport Compact. It comes with what I actually need and not want for my road endeavors. Pic below of color choice.
The "all about bikes only thread" in the "no bike discussion" forum page-45691.png

All for 1672$ no tax and pretty sure that's before the club discount or with it. So what say you people. Good idea, bad idea? Hutch this is the longest post you have ever typed on here? Not sure, probably.

Round two because my ****ing phone is a piece of ****. **** everything.

Cornfield, that's one sexy SS. And welcome to the SS <strike>cult</strike> club. You'll find we have sexy legs and all of the wimminz, that's right, all of them.

Hutch, having puny man legs that barely fill out my skinny jeans, I can only speculate as to a solution for you. I'm thinking relaxed fit, elastic waisted jeans that the old birds in FL seem to embrace aught to do you right.

Everyone else, great work! I've been wholesale neglecting this thread since I haven't done much riding lately (commuting doesn't count).

Two MTBS to mix things up or case one of them goes down, hopefully not any stress fractures. Besides it is a SS as well. Heard they are badass and it's simple stupid.

Road bike for doing road bike things. Whatever those people do. Going up long paved hills for fun I guess and max distance. Ooo, so much fun and agony.

Hutch, I don't think it's you. It's the fact that all of the clothes are made in Bangladesh. I've never seen a Bangladeshi built like you, so who do they have model so that they can build pants? Find the country that breeds the most shot putters, bet you can buy pants from there.

Oh, it does, sometimes, I guess I'm smooth. I've have to re-torque all my pivot bolts every other month. as well as every other nut and bolt

That was a compliment. Or a poorly constructed joke. You said that you had to up 4 sizes to get your legs to fit. Every shot putter I've ever seen is built solid, like you. Now, if that means that you need to buy your pants from Yugoslavia, so be it, as long as they fit.

No I got it except for the Bangladesh part. Fun fact, 100 meter, 200, shot and disc I did all through out HS. Insert ghey HS pic.

Maybe I should give MC Hammer a call. I think those style pants would work. Or those work out pants from the 80's, preferably the tiger stripped ones.

There's lots of places that goods, especially clothes, come from these days that you'd never expect. Same brands, same styles, completely different fit. Just pulled Bangladesh off the top of my head.

Anyway, I ran 440's and high hurdles, I stopped hurdling when I witnessed a competitor fall on a cinder track.

Yeah, it's all overseas now for almost everything, except air...maybe.

Cinder track? When did they phase those out? 1890's? Just playing but, I bet that was horrible on the joints.

Saw Freighty on another thread grumbling about not being able to hit the trails with all the rain they got up her way.

Today was the second rain free day down here in So Cal. 48 hours is what I think is a reasonable amount of time to allow for drainage. Beside that, we only had light-consistant rain down here.

So, with an open 2 hour window early this afternoon, I hit the dirt. First ride in over a week, yikes! It hurt, too but it was goooood pain.

Starting tomorrow, sunny days for the forecast period, unless we end up with that constant fog that never burns off. That won't affect anything though, and if I climb high enough I'll be above the fog anyway.

Back to riding daily starting tomorrow, and the trails should be plenty dry by the weekend. I have a nice steep singletrack in mind that I haven't ridden yet. Video to follow .

I like painful rides, as long as it's the good pain like you had. You can hear it in my videos .

for those of you who know the epic thread "map of the whole forest", it was based on Lowell Dracut. we'll be riding history this weekend.

I've been super busy this week at work, getting home just in time to go to bed so I can do it again tomorrow. My knee is healing pretty fast thanks to the Tegaderm patches. I'm thinking this weekend I'll go hit up a nice antenna road climb, the particular one I'm thinking of will require gears, low gears.

they may get ME crashing on tape, though probably not likely, if i'm in the back. maybe i'll get my shyt-cam up and working. You see, in the last couple rides, i've ripped more paint off my bike than the whole time i've owned it. i'm getting a little more ballsy and just sort of plowing into things instead of slowing down. So yeah, there's been a lot more of ditching my bike and slamming it down on stone walls and rock gardens that i had no business in trying. oh, and last time i was drunk.

i know of at least one camera in the group, but it's performance is spotty at best. Sti has one too. we'll try and get some action. They'll just have to promise to edit out the nude scenes. This is a family site afterall.

he stays in his tent...masturbating. actually, i have no idea if he's masturbating, it just seems like he must be. thats what i imagine anyway. i rode by his tent last time and told him he's getting a bike for xmas (we're going to get him a bike, since we've been so loud and rowdy at midnight) he's never spoken, and we've never seen him.

So, with an open 2 hour window early this afternoon, I hit the dirt. First ride in over a week, yikes! It hurt, too but it was goooood pain.
i rode last night for the first time in weeks. rode indoors at rays mtb in cleveland. great place, love the hell out of it, but cant afford to ride regularly there. i havent ridden trails in a month been depressed about it too, the good weather days weve had have been , of course, days that i have had to work or had other business to deal with. plus, i may be fighting a hernia on top of it all.

been in a bit of a funk because of it all, and im sure thats part of the reason ive been scarce. was hoping that riding at rays last night would have cured the funk, but it didnt.

That was amazing! 2:18 was funny, I nearly fell over.

Yes, I'm proud of you and a little envious. It looks like it was great weather and a nice looking trail. I miss building. I haven't been out for over a year.

That is too cute! Sounds like the GoPro may have had the waterproof door on though, as I couldn't hear as many background sounds as you usually can with a GoPro. If you use the provided non-waterproof door, you pick up more sounds .

I've heard of Ray's MTB park. Sounds like a blast! I imagine it probably cost more than indoor rock climbing gyms though.

Winter just sucks, period. Unless you have snow, then you can have other outdoor fun. When I lived in Iowa as a child I used to love sledding and ice skating. Sledding after an ice storm was the best! You can pick up some serious downhill speed on ice !

That sucks about the hernia .

Great video Wurker! Jett is a natural although I suspect that some old good butt sniffing ended on the cutting room floor. Those trails look nice and tough! (steep? rock steps?)

Yeah, steep everywhere, rocks everywhere, some roots. I love it, though. From everything I've seen about riding in the Northeast, it seems very similar...you and Nikky could relate to these trails around here.

They look very similar to what we have except you ride in spring->summer->summer->indian summer-> while we ride in winter->winter->summer->almost winter.

I am sure Nikkittah can relate to that.

I built up and have been riding three different 650b bikes this year. The Ibis is the latest addition to my stable, the hardtail (On one 456C) is my winter ride, the third bike has been re-purposed for my wife.

would you and your wife want to join a friday night circle-jerk donkeyfest shytshow? i'm still suprised Joe doesnt want in on this. Here is the deal. you show up and drink in the sketchy Millyard parking lot, cover yourself in glowsticks, then take off hootin and hollerin in the woods at night, shoving eachother, smacking asses, inevitable mechanical failures that send some people home, riding by the hobo making barn animal noises, making fun of the one kid in the group who trolls craigslist for love (and once banged a tranny), go back to the lot, drink more, pile into our friend's rape van and steam it up so bad so you can leave bare ass prints on the windows, drink more, then go out and ride more, heckle the people who stop to pee, crash, then go home.

Cuz Nicole throws you in the rape-van with all of her rowdy friends, and you're kinda nervous cuz you don't know anybody, and then she jumps out just as the rape-van is pulling away and sez "Have fun! I'm not going!"

Was looking at MTBs in the LBS today, and noticed a ton of 2x10 drivetrains with nice 22x36 low gears. That's lower than the gearing on my Wahoo, or the 24x34 low gears I put on my road triples. Problem is, I do use the big chainring on my Wahoo, so I would miss the high gears if I switched to a 2x10 drivetrain on my next mountain bike.

I'm on my phone, so I'm having difficulty reading the numbers on that large cog. It looks like it says 10-42T. That can't be right, is it?

that's what it looks like. 10 is awfully small, but besides that it seems do-able, right? i have a 7speed that goes 13-36...
