    Shope Creek

I wanted to start up a post about the trails at Shope Creek.

Recently, I have been exploring that area more and more and wanted to reach out to the community. Is there anyone doing any trail work, mapping, big picture development, etc.

Of course Shope Creek will never be Bent Creek, Tsali, or Dupont, but it does offer a great place to ride. With a little love this cove could be one hell of a place to hit up.

Is anyone up for kicking around ideas on how to improve and expand the trails?

This will help give you an idea of where the trails are located
Map of Trails in the Shope Creek Section of the Pisgah National Forest

The trails don't have any markings, consist of technical sections descents/climbs linked up with old logging roads. There are a few stream crossings too.

Does anyone have any gps/mapping information on this area?

Oops, the trails on that map were broken. Sorry - I've fixed it now, so check it again.

Yes, I live right near there and spent some time GPS'ing and mapping the "trails" last year. Many more paths have started getting worn in just in the last 12 months or so, but those ones on the map are still the main ones. Specifically, there's also a connector from that trail dangling to the south back to the parking area through some of the clearcuts, and some additional connectors across the middle of that northwestern loop. You can download what I have from the KML/GPX/GeoJSON links below the map.

It's definitely worth at least one trip. Both of the loops depicted are pretty fun and it's a beautiful little area.

Technically, bikes are not allowed on any of the singletrack in the area (only the gated forest roads). But honestly...it's hard to tell where one road ends and a "trail" begins in places, and everything rideable is being used by mountain bikers a lot. I suggested to the Forest Service that they designate some trails up there and nip the "user-created" problem in the bud during their Trail Strategy process, but that was summarily dismissed. So I'd recommend getting some exploring in before they bring out the ban hammer.
