    Dupont Camping/Workday August 6th - 8th

Camping Friday and Saturday, leave Sunday. August 6 - 8. Friday campers can arrive anytime after 4:00 PM. We need to have our stuff packed and a no trace campsite Sunday afternoon.

We will camp at the Horse Barn. Showers and toilet available. Enter through the gate on Reasonover Road/Conservation or High Falls access area only.

(gate lock # will be provided through email from me prior to the event which is why ALL CAMPERS must RSVP to (Jonathon) extrmtao @ hotmail com with a subject of "UpState SORBA Dupont Campout").

Campers must volunteer in some way on Saturday. However you don't have to camp to come to the work day. We will have rides Saturday evening after the work day and Sunday. Please feel free to bring the family as this will be a family friendly event. As long as one person in the family is volunteering in some way, you all can camp. If you have a physical ailment that does not allow physical labor and still want to camp, email me and we will work something out.

Meeting location and time for those not camping will be announced at a later date as we will have teams of workers going to seperate locations.

Currently we will be working on Rocky Ridge, Airstrip and Reasonover trails.

No Alcohol of any kind allowed in the park.

If you see David Brown (Forest Supervisor) while riding around, please thank him for this unique opportunity.

Jonathon - Let the questions and Sarcasm fly.

I'll be in Los Angelos walking my younger sister down the isle. I can't get out of that one for any reason. I went to one acouple of years ago and had a great experience. it's pretty cool to camp out in a State Park that no one is allowed to camp at. I would be there with my family (yes, that means my WIFE!!!!) if I didn't have this prior commitment. Have fun.

Technically it's still a State Forest. Wow, I sound like Woody.

Maida, You are correct but to sound like Woodman you would need to write at least a six page dissertation on why it is a State Forest rather than park.

Can you please clarify the difference between a state park and state forest for me? I'd like to attend this workday/campout but want to know exactly what I'm getting myself into first.

    Thanks.

The main difference is the management, Parks and forests are managed by different groups with different agendas. Historically, NC State Parks has been opposed to mtn biking access. Parks don't usually allow access after hours for things like night rides. Parks charge a use fee and/or a parking fee.

There is a real possibility that DuPont could become a State Park. There is already a plan in motion to have DuPont co-managed by both Parks & Forests.

Sorry for saying the wrong thing. Just go and have fun and give Woody a hard time for being broken and old. I askeed my sister if she could move her wedding date and she wasn't amused. I don't know why.

Hmmmm, The extreme tomato has 2,149 MTBR post as compared to my 869. But he is accusing me of typing too much

Though I may be fully functional by then (or as good as I ever get), I can't make the weekend as we hope to leave for Bend OR on Aug. 4th. Thanks for hosting the weekend, camp-out and the trail work day.

Are they serious about that no alcohol thing? Why would anyone camp out without beer?

No alcohol is the official rule. David (forest supervisor) knows all too well that folks will be drinking beer after a hard day of trail work. Just keep your frosty beverages poured into a cup, and keep empty bottles/cans out of sight from the public.

Thanks to those who showed up!! We were able to redesign the turn at the bottom of airstrip, fix a couple mud spots and two people assisted the forest supervisor in closing Galax trail due to its terrible shape.

In total we contributed 92 hours to the forest, thanks again.

Thanks for putting together the work weekend. We worked over with David Brown closing the Galax Trail along with a couple others. It was a great day to be in the woods and hope to be able to camp on the next work weekend.

I got there late, so I had to find the biggest shovel to move enough dirt to catch up with everyone else.
