Double Dare / Fall Gathering ~ registration open!
Ladies and Gentlemen, Pisgah Productions is proud to announce the permit has been approved and it's ON! Registration is NOW OPEN for the 2010 Double Dare and Fall Gathering.

    REGISTER HERE: https://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1890803

Double Dare: Teams of two riders will race to reach up to 10 checkpoints per day, two days in a row. Race begins at Noon Saturday and all teams must be back by Midnight. Race resumes at 6AM Sunday with a time trial and every team must return before 6PM. There will be nothing at the checkpoints (excluding the manned mandatory CPs) except existing landmarks. Racers must take a photo to prove they reached each CP.
$50 entry fee for a team of two with one vehicle.

Fall Gathering: Maybe you remember the Gatherings, maybe you haven't been around here long enough. Well, if you do remember them, let's call this Fall Gathering Lite. Bring the family, Bring your friends, Bring food, refreshments, lawn games, and of course everything else you'd need for a couple days of car camping in the Pisgah National Forest. We'll provide a fire, sound system for tunes, and a general good vibe. Come on out and watch the racers and have a good time.
    $10 per vehicle.

If you have any questions or stories or photos from Double Dare/Gatherings past, Post 'em here!

    FAQ's
Is it OK to bring Fido?
It's OK to bring dogs but they MUST stay on leash at all times.

Do I have to be a PMBAR finisher to compete in the '10DD?
    No.

Why are you charging a fee? I thought the Double Dare was a free event...
We are now required to have permits for all Pisgah Productions events. With permits come all sorts of other fees. Permits, Insurance, Campground Fees, etc. add up quick.

    Why aren't you charging $200?!?!?
It's not about the money, maaaan. It's about the love.... :p

(I'll just keep adding Q&A here as they come up)

Sunday will be Halloween. Will there be some sort of 'costume thing' going on?
Absolutely. We have not figured out all the details but if you race in costume, there will be bonuses. Plus, we will have a costume contest for the Gatherers on Saturday night.

There is a cap. However, the number is pretty high (100 vehicles). I'm not too worried about selling out...

Hey everybody, I've received a few complaints about active.com. Folks are saying you need to fill out forms three times and the like. I assure everyone that you will only be charged once.... and that I'm working with active to get the excess forms deleted from the registration process.....

OK, the problems should be fixed now....

I'm still not completely healed psychologically from ORAMM, I fear riding in that region this soon with a still damaged psyche could be disastrous to my progress. I am inviting my therapist, renowned mountain-biking psychologist Dr. Harry Bawlzak to the gathering to continue with my treatment. Maybe he can help you with your clownaphobia.

No need to reserve a specific campsite. It's a big group camp area so you just set up where ever you like.

My slow race pics are from the 2005 gathering. Brado is the King of gathering and race pics, but I can bet there are a few (actual trail riding?) "amateur" photos that never saw MTBr publication. Share your memories.

    Just a couple more questions:
    - Do I need to bring water up with me or will there be running water there?
    - I wanted to come up Thursday to do a little extra riding, will I be able to camp there or do I need to find somewhere else?

    Thanks

    Ed,

    There is running water.
We have the campground from Friday at 2pm 'till Monday at noon. The vehicle pass covers all three (or any single) nights.

Racers: Sunday's race will go until 6PM. Sorry for the conflicting information on the race website. Also, remember that each team is only allowed one vehicle unless you buy a vehicle pass in addition to your entry fee.

I will email the gate lock code to registered racers/gathererererers next week. Please lock the gate every time you come or go.

Other visitors/cheapskate gatherers: There is tons of parking outside of Cove Creek Campground. Feel free to hike/ride in. We'll be in the first group camp.

Got an e-mail today asking about "quiet camp sites", weather and fire.

On the lower side, toward the river, there are walk-in tent areas. Other than that, it is pretty much an open field. Beautiful place for star gazing.

Weather is looking like great fall camping/riding temps - 30 to 60 and sunny.

As far as fire, the rule I know is no personal ground fire rings. Bring your wood for the group area! I have seen portable off-ground pits in use. E?

Personal request: please manage/remove all your trash and PLEASE help clean up after the puppies - even if you don't have one.

I hate dog poop in my tires. :incazzato:

Been at Cove Creek twice this summer and both times spoke with camp host...

The Hemlocks that are near the river are currently being treated for Wolly Agelid and they have been requesting people NOT CAMP under them to help them recover. I've seen the host ask people to move already set-up camps. Camping allowed only in the open field.

No fires are allowed outside the main camp circle (rule posted right on rec.gov site) and enforced when the host comes through. The fires also damage the trees...

Thanks for the info! I had heard about some work awhile back, but could not find a current status on line. I'll look into it tomorrow.

Porta-fire was always in the open areas. Sorry that I was not specific.

Locals know the rules. Sounds like you had several host visits.... good folks. They really hate an open gate though.

Official word: No camping along the river due to impact. Trees have been damaged and there are erosion issues as well. Fella I talked to knew nothing about treatments to the hemlocks.

I haven't been there since spring, but he said they have erected a split rail fence.

It is ok to walk to the water.

I hope they aren't spraying the trees. Cause stuff that kills bugs is much more effective in killing fish.

Maida, if they are spraying, it hasn't worked its way up the food chain to the fish yet, I caught a couple of small rainbows at the base of the falls last week. Fish seemed pretty healthy, and wise. Not too many biting on the end of my line.

Wish I could join up this weekend, but after having been gone last weekend, I don't think I can pull off this weekend too!

Spraying is very inefficient and effective only for a short time, they would use soil injection which keeps the imidacloprid at the base of the tree (and below ground) and then spreads the imidacloprid throughput the tree and to the needles. They plan the injections during times when tree uptake is at peak. I think they did the treatments last spring or even last fall. The imidacloprid migrates up through the tree but does not migrate up through the soil.

np, I came about the knowledge the expensive way - I have a collection of huge Hemlocks in my yard which I've spent more than a few $$$ on to save. There's a really nice (and smart) older German man in Brevard who does the ground injection at the best price around.

Me too! Within minuets a thread can go from racing to camping to tree maintenance to beer to finding a dead squirrel at the bottom of your stairs. (Our adopted cat apparently still has his feral ways and wanted to share his special prize.)

Darn, I probably shouldn't have pitched it in the woods. Could have made a great race gift.
