    Bike Street

If you are wondering what happened to Bike Street, this sums it up:

Retail chain BikeStreet USA begins liquidation | Bicycle Retailer and Industry News

Matt and the guys in Spartanburg were great to work with. Sounds like they tried to grow too fast. I hope some of the good shops they bought out will be back.

I was at the S'burg one on Tuesday and Taylors today and didn't believe it until I saw the woodruff rd one just bare racks. Sucks for any bike shop to close, hope all of the good people stay in the bike biz.
All I know about the whole thing is that when they started they really expanded fast, almost like a bike QT.

All I know is Alan and Taylor worked on my bike a lot and did a good job and didn't charge too much. Maybe that's why they went belly up.

The link is broken; but there is a cached version available:

It sucks, IMO. It is nice to have shops at the locations of the trailheads. Having the Hub and Sycamore at Pisgah Forest and Carolina Fatz/Bikestreet and Motion Makers at Bent Creek is very convenient.

It is convenient. Fatz was doing just fine until the corporate swell came through.

So is Fatz/Bikestreet still open? Haven't been over there in a while.

As far as I know, they just expanded and everybody there seemed to be very happy about the bike street takeover.

But I do not know the guys good enough to tell if that was just something they had to say.

Matt is working on bringing back the Woodruff location under his own name again, I believe at least two other locations will be coming back too?

Caught me off guard as I had a new bike on order with them, now I have to start over.

I went by about 8:30 this A.M. and the store is empty of inventory and tools.

I began Mt. Biking with a Haro I bought from them 6 years ago and they built out a Heckler frame for me last year. Every visit was a good experience.

I'm saddened that such good people and their famiies have lost their livelihood.

That sucks, I've outfitted my whole family through them. Anyone know if Jason has plans to try to bring it back?

    Fatz is closed.

I hope Jay got the rest of what was due to him. It is common that when I business is sold the previous owner stays on for a period of time (usually a year to two years) for the transition and then is paid the part of the sale. I believe this is true in this case.

Also hate to see everyone out of a job. I didn't know Jay well but he seems like an awesome guy and I know he worked hard to make that business.

I just talked to some of the guys at Motion Maker and they said that they do not believe that Jason will try to open Fatz again because he was done with Fatz before he was bought out by Bike Street they said.

Not sure if that is the truth, Jason seemed to be pretty into it but on the other hand I do not know him that well.

I have talked to Jay himself and what the guys at MM said is true.
He planned on staying with Bike Street to fulfill the contract but did not know if he would stay or go after that and opening up another bike shop did not sound like it was ever going to happen.

Maybe things will change now that situations changed but who knows.

I talked with him when I bought my Superlight back in April. My impression was that he liked owning Fatz, but it really took up a lot of time. Running your own business leaves very little time for family and riding.

Sucks but than on the other hand some else might pick up the pieces and open up a new shop up.

I don't doubt that he did like owning Fatz. Jay is super in to bicycles. However, he is also super in to his family.

I get the impression he is choosing family first as he should.

Honestly, it doesn't matter either way as Western NC already has several great bike shops. Is there room for more? Sure but we will survive either way without missing a beat.

Asheville might not miss it, but it was the only place in Spartanburg that had a good selection of mountain bike brands - Niner, Scott, Cannondale, Santa Cruz. But I guess a lot of us from down South end up buying bikes in Asheville anyway. I got my Salsa at Liberty last year.

Didn't say we won't miss it.
I think several people will miss Fatz and the great service they provided.
I said we won't miss a beat as in life will go on if another shop doesn't take its place because we still have several great shops and selections.

Just wanted to keep that clear so Jay and the others don't think I am talking smack.

BTW, if you want those brands. The Hub has Niner, Scott and Santa Cruz and Cannondale can be found at Youngblood. Both great shops. Everything Bike Street had is still pretty much covered in this area.

Nate, Greg, and Gabe from Fatz are all stellar mechanics. A lot of the shops in Asheville would be well-served to spend the money to hire them. Their (and other shop employees) loss of livelihood is BY FAR the biggest downside to this whole deal, at least in Asheville

Don't have a clue what you're talking about, but, I was in there the other day and had weird vibes. Seemed a little dead with maybe one new bike. Could have been between shipments...who knows. Nevertheless, I had heard good things about the place before this experience.

I sometimes also have no clue what I am talking about but I drove by there this week it looked all white like nothing was in there but it was late and I had more than one cold one going thru my system.

Pro-Bikes building is being sold. Everybody out. PB was location shopping for awhile - may move a bit farther north (?).

I have heard a rumor that a bike shop could open up in the old Fatz/Bike Street building. But I can't vet the rumor so I don't know how much stock I would put in it.

I for one will miss Jack and Mike over at the Columbia store. I've been a reg there for the last five years. Wish there was a way for them to stay at that location, great spot next to Harbison. I hope we get a shop like Beer City Bikes to come in.

That's true MostChillin. Columbia really needs a place for riders to connect. I've had a hard time connecting with folks that want to do more than a single (slow) loop. Not that I'm some kind of bada$$. It'd just be nice to meet locals that actually like to ride more than the local loop. If you're ever up for a ride send a PM. I work out of town but I'm in town on weekends.
