Looking to get a Niner, but few questions first.

As the title said looking at used/pre-owned hard-tail Niners and would like to know a few things. I am looking to run 27.5+ or 29+ tire. I think the ROS9 Plus(or whichever that green model is called) is the only model that holds 29+ tires correct? What about 27.5+, which hard-tail years and models support that.

    Right now my choices are:
    SIR
    EMD
    Air

SIR I know is steel. EMD is Scandium, correct, and Air is just regular alloy? I take their steel models are fairly light compared to other steel bikes or are they like some of the other brands and lean on the heavy side? Not familiar with scandium, but how does that compare to alloy and steel in terms of weight, comfort, and durability? Thanks kindly!

So the ROS+ is the only Niner that can handle 29 plus tires.
The current gen AIR and SIR are the only ones that can handle 29/27.5+
The old EMD was regular alloy and the old AIR was scandium but i don’t “think” the current gen is scandium. Scandium is just a higher grade aluminum alloy.
The current get AIR can handle a 29x2.6 tire in the back.

I have an 2019 Air 9 2-Star and it rides pretty good, only issue I have with it is the fork. The Judy Gold doesn't seem to be able handle aggressive terrain. This bike is my daughter's so it doesn't seem much excitement. I'm in the process of getting a carbon Niner rigid fork for the bike since I ended up going with gravel/road tires for her. The frame feels solid and nimble with the 2.5/2.6 tires it came with originally and even more so with the 700x50 Giant tires I swapped in but it's no road bike nor XC, it's more fitting for trails from the feel vs my DV9 which is more playful for a 29er.

So, what year did 27.5+ become a thing? Which is better Air, or EMD if not going the steel route? Are they both the same geometry? What is the max tire clearance for 29 wheels? Will any of the older models be able to take at least 29x2.6? I know I am seeing their rigid carbon fork going for $200 on CL what is the max clearance for that?

I believe 27.5 wheels s a whole came out around 2013 or so. One would think the Air 9 would have a modernized geo over the EMD 9 being that one is still sold today. On top of that the Air should be lighter than the EMD as well.

Looks like the Air can hold a max wheel size of 29x2.8 so a 27.5x3 should fit too.

So, which 2013 model(s) can hold 27.5+ then?

Good question, which 2013 model. Could the ROS non plus take 27.5+? Just to double check ROS is steel correct? Would it be lighter than SIR?
