Hope Quick question to the nice nicolai forum people

    Hello there!

I am seriously considering a Helius FR with a dhx air but i was wondering whether any Helius owners have compared the ride to a BIG-S enduro. Similar horst link but slightly different geo.

I do love my enduro but am looking for a change and ze germans do know how to engineer kit! The detailing on the helius is sick and it would go with my wotans rather fantastically.

    Cheers
    Rob

Hi ya Rob............ Very good question, have not heard of any peeps mention a ride comparison... But in my book the Helius would eat a Specialized, not saying they are not good, just not my cup of tea..... And for sure, ze Germans know how to engineer stuff.........

Best bet is to shoot a PM to Err, he will help you out big time. He helped me build up and spec out my Nicolai, a true champion, he will be doing mt Helius FR also..... I dont say this about many people, but for me, when it comes to bikes, he rocks! You will not be dissapointed............

My word you do seem to have an attitude problem with other peoples posts! Is that because you really cant think of anything better to say or just lacking in the inteligence? If so i am sure you have heard the saying about nothing nice to say and shutting your mouth and all that.

Apart fom that hmm have you ridden an s-works enduro?? seems to make a hell of a lot of people happy! seems to be sold an auful lot! seen roam? Can you ride like bearclaw? And as for you buying me a frame??

I also have the Giant dh with 888s for the gravity stuff! i also have a Morewood Shova and my enduro which as it describes is a bloody good ENDURO machine.

All i asked is whether anyone had tried both! CHEERS to Whafe for a sensible answer anyhoo!

Really chill with the cr*p and be nice! Peace!

Oh and by the way my landcruiser would demolish the escort and the bmw

sworksrob - that is a nice quiver of bikes............... Dont be offended at all by CF, it is all in jest...... You will often find that many people whom are passionate about Nicolai, will have differing views on Specialized especially..... I dont respect Specialized at all, have no judgement on those that support them, but think they suck. Mainly cause they are over priced for what you get... But as they say, each to there own...

I think though the likes of your Enduro pictured, you would be better to compare that to a Helius ST.... The Helius FR would climb better for sure than the Enduro, but the FR in my opinion would be able to take the abuse the Enduro can......

There were stacks of Enduro's at Whsitler too.... All good................

Just having the "horst link" does not make two differing suspensions identical. That pivot location is only an element and implementation has varying degrees of success. Many because just for looks at a certain point.

Hear ya JC, that is what led me to my comment, the Enduro and Helius FR would ride nothing alike at all................for the reasons your point out with lazer precision....

Only have limited time on an SL which is a different beast...but I was not impressed with the suspension performance ie lack luster fork and rear shock but a buddy who has one dented the top tube very quickly as the thin tubes don't hold up to the abuse of a dual crown fork. That said the SL is very different from your SX.

The SX may compare better to the Helius ST in terms of geometry but comparing it to the FR the Enduro has a slightly lower stand over and iscg mounts. The FR can be speced with both via custom program but the FR is designed to handle the epic all mountain days better and can still hold up under the abuse of hucking. If your going real big consider the ST to replace both your Enduro and Giant. The biggest difference is the attention to detail and customer service, two very different companies here.

Woo sorry about causing the war! Not my intention
I must sound like a big s fanclub now!

Get the point about different strategies for implementing similar designs but on paper with the s-works running 150mm travel from 63.5 shock stroke i.e 2.36:1 on the shock compared to the helius on 167mm travel from 50.8? for 3.28:1 or 57.15? for 2.92 to one?
Not sure which stroke is used!!

You'd have thought that the enduro would put less duty on the shock and allow it to function better. As i said on paper which is entirely different to real life.

Would a helius st match a Giant dh? it would be great to have the performance without the tank like weight but i cant fault the suspension.

Was really looking for a frame for jack of all trades duty. love the Nicolai design details. Am an engineer myself and can appreciate the worksmanship in all the nicolai work.

Specialized do have the corporate weight behind them to get in to very advanced engineering such as all the forged components (theoretically far stronger due to crystal structure manipulation - you dont use machined spanners do you - i digress), and hydroformed tubes on the enduro. Nicolai reaches a pinacle of an alternative method.

HOWEVER the specialised method of TOTALINTEGRATIONFORYOURSOUL is reaching cannondales level of pain! Can you stomach 500 smackers for an SI chainset? my diabolus are 200 and one would imagine a little stiffer!!

Anyway cheers for the helpful advice! might have a look at the st as well. The morewood although a fantastic dh + freeride frame (geo is grrreat) is not really a pedal up sodding welsh mountains sort of freeride bike. Must get fitter.

sworksrob - as I mentioned, a great quiver, but I do feel there is some overlap......If I were you which I am not!

I would keep your dedicated DH bike...... mmmmm Which one, the Giant or the Moorewood, cant imagine the Giant would pedal better up hill than the Moorewood...

The ulitmate and am not talking out me a s s .... Is to get a Nicolai Evo G Boxx DH bike........ and then get a Helius FR.................. Job sorted........................

Specialized do have the corporate weight, but they lack any sort of soul what so ever... Soul is where its at.... I dont really read too much into sponsorship, it comes down to $$, a rider will ride any bike if the $$ is better than the other offers......

I myself are going to the Helius FR for the reaon that I love my MotoLite, but it does not allow me to jump off anything I like on the trail. This is not a problem of the frame, it is me, I will break it......

So will have the Nicolai Nucleon for DH / FR duties, the Helius FR as my all day ride, then the other bits n bobs, roadie, DJ etc

    MMMm nucleon.... dribble....

Certainly the giant dh is a lacklustre climber but consolidating the morewood and the sworks into one is my aim but preferably withought the weight penalty.

What i am looking for is a "free" "ride" bike lol.
Will have to give the ST a go.

Anybody any idea of the frame weight?

    Cheers

A good plan, deffinatly need to trim the overlap down..... yeah, i dribble over the Nucleon too..........

I want a free bike too, never works that way, I keep dreaming.....

Medium Helius ST with shock is 4.8Kg (frame and shock (DHX Coil))

All good, share the build spec thoughts with us...

Shoot a PM to Err, he has an ST, he will share info and help you out, could even do you a deal that would make you smile big time.....

    A pic for dribble value...

Why don't he just buy Err's ST???

The ST is a super choice, like I always say I wish I knew more about Nicolai 5-6 years ago because some of those 25 foot drops(mostly the 15 to 18 footer's to flat) would have a dram on a bike such as the Helius ST.That said I don't that I would want to have to choose between the ST or the FR for a freeride bike(I mean after all the bike is called a FR for a reason)My FR is 31 pounds and I'm sure it could take anything I throw at it.I'm in noway doing big stunts anymore(almost couldn't get out of bed today from drops 5 years ago)but If you built up a 33-34 pound bomb proff FR,I'm sure it would and could handle the same as a 39-41 pound ST.S-works,I'm sure if you read between the lines you can plainly see that Whafe is TELLING you that Specialized is in no way in the same ball park as Nicolai(he just has a different way of putting it than me )OK so I'm working on it SHEESH give me a break.Truth be told I think the new 08 Stumpy (the 4"carbon bike)is a really sweet bike,I don't like that its in house Special ED front and rear shocks, but its a really nice bike.In fact there 4' and down bikes and the road stuff is way way nice(stupid money,I'd rather a custom hand made frame for the same or less $$)Anthing 5' and up I hate. Its really easy a mass produced cookie cutter stamed out bike(stock with reflectors mind you)is in no way the same as a hands on custom frame.Would you let someone come into your house and tell you that there Buick and there(wrong there i know) Ford are nicer than your Rover's? My # 1 ride to own is a Range Rover sport,NOW THAT'S TRANSPORTATION. OK I'm done bye.CF.....

    Ai ST.. FR.. ST.. FR..

Need to haul an ST up a hill and chuck it off the top! My lbs deals for nicolai! Will have to try and blag a test. The FR seems to be the more UK friendly option.

Just hoping to find a frame as good on the ups as on the downs. Wales is lacking in the cable car badgers! In fact the UK is lacking in cable cars! meh!

All our riding is PAIN straight out of the back of the car or uplift service which involves minivan with likeminded Nutters!

And then one goes and sees the thread on the 08 Foes Fly Air!

Me being from New Zealand, you know, the country with the team that is going to punish the english in rugby...

We too have to ride up everything....

I would go for the Helius FR hands down, it will make your other bikes redundent...

CF is right, his delivery is different to mine, I love his delivery, its what makes him who he is, and that is a top bloke..... See you have gotten used to it already.....

The UK Nicolai peeps are well respected................ But man, look into buying one in the USA, travel over and ride there and come back, bob's your aunty, all good...

1off 4.6 HSE - Dead - slipped liners following cracked block
    1off 3.9v8 EFI rangie - alive
    1off 3.5v8 rangie - alive barely
1off diesel slug rangie - alive apart from some rust has been replaced with chassis!
1off 2door GMC 6.2 v8 diesel rangie with 2 tonne Hiab crane and pto winches - beast!
1off Discovery with 1piston scrap metal 1piston holey 1piston perfect and one bore scored to destruction. - Sold

Then the 4.2 Landcruiser with old man emu 2" lift. Snorted!

    Hmmm!

That would imply that we (UK) actually put up a fight in order to be punished! Not really likely! That assumes we actually have any good players!

Might as well give you the ball and go sit in the stands.

Yeah, it is kinda sad, its like english rugby trained for 30 years to win the 03 WC and now think that that will tide them over the next 30 years. There record since the last WC is in the toilet... Anyways.... Few more weeks will see, could well be a Southern Hemisphere teams final....
