    Looking forward to your FR ... I might give it a year before looking to get the 2008 FR ... will give the 2007 FR a miss ...

    Who knows ... after a year on the CC i might decide to keep it ... just gotta keep tabs on the type of riding I do ... ;)

    Yeah i thought about some of the other colours in the massive Nicolai selection but in the end couldn't go past the anno black - so smooth.
    I have had two real rides so far. My first impression was how stiff the whole bike felt. The bar/stem/fork combo feels really solid and gives great confidence when going through rocky/downhill sections. The bike also feels really solid through the bottom bracket and cranks, i put put this down to the Nicolai engineering of the frame but also the Truvativ Noir cranks - they're sweet. I was pleased to see my bike arrive with the new DT Swiss XM180 shock, it is very plush and active, i have to look down while i ride to see that it is working as there is no noticebale pedal bob while riding. With the front and rear locked out the bike is super fast and good for pedalling on the road to the trailhead. As expected the Juicy Ultimate brakes and SRAM/Truvativ drivetrain have performed flawlessly so far. As for the overall ride, it's great - awsome geometry of the frame and a strong/light build makes for a confidence inspiring and fast trail bike.

    I am collecting it this wednesday, I can't wait. I already have all the kit to put on it. I went for a double saint crank with a larger 36T chainring with E Thirteen bashguard, which I am having fun putting together until wednesday. Will post pics after pick up. She is going straight to the LBS for fitting of the headset and BB. I just can't wait

    Update image, out on the trail at Afan.
    Having put some miles off road on this bike now, its the best handling bike I've ever ridden. Rock solid and dependable in its handling.
    I can only wonder what the Helius FR must be like - must resist the temptation.

    I haven't owned or ridden a full suss bike for about six months now. Had a Turner Flux before, but always felt it was a little fragile to me.

    The build quality on the Helius is something else - the attention to detail and the finishing is first class.

    Went for the first ride today on the Helius, first port of call was to Skyline Cycles (Kevin the mechanic) who set the suspension up for me - first coil rear shock (thanks Kev).

    Decided to ride Whites Level due to the deterioration in the weather,plus I know the terrain very well.

    Climbs very well, and is very quiet, bike felt very controlled and supple.

    Descending was where the bike really shone though. It was controlled and never felt flustered, didn't push it too hard as its slightly different to the hardtail that I've been using for the last six months or so.

    It felt similar to the Turner Flux, but much more stable and firmer. Tracked very well.

    I might have to reconsider my opinion of full suss on this evidence.

    Out tomorrow to give it a blast - it'll have to come down the final Skyline descent. It's really good living near Afan, spoilt for choices of where to ride , its all good :-)

    Thats a super lush minx of a machine..never seen one in the flesh but anno bronze is supposed to look the balls in sunlight... loving the finishing kit too.. big fan of times and the Thompson and Flite combo rocks

    OOh an Afan resident :) Love it there. haven't made a trip since last summer but will deffo be up there soon.. that Skyline descent is a stonker.. last time i was there we did Whites Level, then did the climb again to pick up the Skyline descent cos we love it so much :)

    Heard while there its worth paying a visit to the Gorlech trail at Brechfa.. have you done that?

    Yep, I'm lucky really, work brought me to the area, I can literally ride my bike to the top of the Wall descent from my house. I know all the Afan and Glyncorrwg trails very well.

    Skyline descent is my favourite, but all the trails offer good riding.

    I've ridden the Brechfa trail as well, its very different in that its very man made with an ultra smooth surface. The descents are superb, big banked berms with loads of table tops etc.
    Well worth a visit, but can be very slippery in the wet - there's quite a bit of slate in the trail.

    I love the Afan National Park. I haven't been for about six months but it's great now the campsite near summit cycles is open so you can pitch your tent and you are straight out onto the trails. I haven't taken my FR onto the hills there yet, but the final descent on skyline is just one of the best. I took the wife around all 47 Km of the summit trail for her first mountain biking visit - she loved it.

    Micolap99, how are the trails riding at the moment? drainage is normally quite good although it can get a bit hairy on the Wall when wet and muddy. Again, a nice ride buddy.

    Trails are holding up really well, the drainage is very good. It rained quite hard at the end of yesterdays ride, but the sun is actually out at the moment.

    I'm just about to leave the house to ride the Skyline today, got the rear shock dialled in now etc.

    The final descent on the Wall has cut up a little, making it a little more difficult than it once was - but its still a great final descent.

    Skyline final descent is the top section for me though.

    The rohloff speedhub is an internal gear hub. I have attached some links to the Rohloff Owners Club and Rohloff site itself (as there is just too much information to get a clear and precise answer).

    I use a Rohloff hub on my hardtail and tried it for a short period on the Turner Flux. The speedhub is quite expensive and this usually puts most people off (plus they see the weight as being a major issue).

    The cost for a built up wheel with the Speedhub is around 850, and the rear wheel weighs in at about 5lbs. Got that bit out of the way first, now for the advantages.

    On a hardtail it makes very good sense (more about fitting on full suss later), you'll need some form of tensioning the chain this is where a Rohloff specific frame is worth its weight in gold - see Nicolai and Endorfin hardtails.

    You can mount a speedhub with the use of a chain tensioner, you'd need to do this if you were fitting to a full suss due to the chain growth through the travel.

    You get 14 gears which replicate the range of a normal 44/32/22 with 11 -32 cassette (almost) , but with no duplication of overlap of ratios.

    No chain slap.
    No chain suck.
    No missed gear shifts.
    No derailled chain.
    Clean straight chain line - lasts a long time.
    Easier to clean.
    Mud and poor weather makes no difference to shift performance.
    Ability to change gear stood still.
    Rohloff reliability reputation.
    Get to belong to a quirky equipment user group :-)
    Get used to having to answer loads of question about the hub on every ride by other bikers........

    Have a look at the links, there's plenty of information here.

    I personally think it' great on a hardtail, and probably wouldn't use conventional gears here again.

    But........(I'm in the minority here amongst Rohloff users), I didn't like it so much on the full suss.

    You have to use a chain tensioner , ideally a chain guide helps as the chain can jump off (it did with me). You do get some chain slap.
    Probably more than anything else though the extra weight seemed to have an adverse effect on the handling of the Flux. Now the Flux is a light weight bike, and it might not be the same for all full suss.......

    As a winter / bad weather piece of kit it can't be beat.

    Hardtail and rohloff for the winter.

    Bouncy bile with gears for the drier weather.

    New Helius CC Rohloff
    Just built up my new Helius CC Rohloff specific frame. Haven't ridden it in anger yet, have to wait until this Saturday.

    I ordered the frame about three months ago and wanted to get back to a Rohloff equipped bike, I've also got a conventional geared Helius CC.

    Also wanted something a little different from the more usual ano bronze or ano black.

    Went for gloss white front triangle with ano black FR rear stays. Nice touch on the headtube with the milled out "N".

    Dunno the weight yet, Skyline Cycles (who I bought it through) will weigh it on Saturday.

    I guesstimate about 30lbs, which is ok considering its got the 'hoff. Its a trail bike after all.

    Considered the new AM, but the CC is a bit of a misnomer in my book. The CC (Cross Country) is more like a lightish AM bike, its very sturdy and suits my style of riding perfectly. Got some proper coil shocks front and rear with a bullet proof frame and drive chain.

    It's my perfect dream bike, it could very well replace the other Nicolai Helius CC that I've got - time will tell.

    if you mount the shock the other way round, you can get away with the top mounting hole ... check for tyre clearance at full compression by removing the coil and make sure that your cabling under the top tube do not go through the middle over the shock ... still within the shock mounting brackets but use a cable tie to keep them on the edge ...

    Very sweet bike there! I was getting all moist over the Helius AM, but started thinking along your lines - the CC is plenty of bike for me. I think Crazy Fred even commented a while back that the CC was almost as capable as his FR.

    I've got a Rohloff as well, so I'm looking forward to reading your impressions of how the speedhub performs on the CC. Good times!

    Some great builds on here - just want to add mine to the thread. First post on the board, been reading it for a while and wanted to add my new Nic - she is a few months old now, and what a sweet bike (as you all know). Anyway, here she is!

    I will post up the full spec soon, but it is a large standard frame (Fire Dept Red/Black anno), mavic rims on I9 hubs and spokes, XO/XTR/Raceface drive train, Thomson kit, Magura Menja fork and Marta SL brakes. Weighs in just under 25.5lbs

    I've got the 57mm stroke shock, you can fit a 57mm stroke shock in the second hole from the top. Don't fit it in the top hole as the rear wheel will foul the seat tube under compression.

    I'm confused about the positioning of the rear shock though - a few people have mounted their shocks with the reservoir at the top. Nicolai supplied the frame and shock and it has the reservoir at the bottom.

    How does the shock benefit from being mounted with the reservoir at the top?

    ryates, thanks. The Industry Nines are a bit of a thing. Super stiff, light, just fantastic. I got the Helius from a shop where I live down here in Crowthorne (right nr Swinley Forest if you know the area), called iBike. Great little shop and of course a Nic dealer, the only one near by.

    Anyway, the guys in there were using them on their builds and when I went in for the CC I planned on getting another set of Kings, but they convinced me to try these. They were planning on picking up the distribution in the UK, but were only getting them in on an ad-hoc basis until they finalised their distribution deal. But a bad thing happened and this shop went under a month or two ago. Anyway, that is how I got them, and I'm hoping someone else will start distribution over here-mentioned it to another local store who might be interested in picking up a few of the brands iBike were carrying. Shame-it was a good shop...Great wheels though.

    I did consider the red with black when I ordered my frame, but went for my favourite white and black scheme.

    Not too many Helius bikes around, what are your comments about the ride compared to other frames that you've owned?

    ryates - they were a good dealer - really good bunch of guys. 550 sounds ok to me - I think mine were a little more than that before discount. Good to know there is someone else in the UK getting them in in case I need some spares.

    nicolap99 - well, when I saw the quality of the paint jobs on these things I thought it'd be worth a punt on it - seems to be holding up well so far, and I really like the back red combination with the other kit on the bike. Gloss white is nice though.

    From a ride point of view, the thing I notice is how neutral it is - standing up and honking up steep climbs and I don't notice any pedal-induced bob - compare that to my Nomad which would bounce all over the place. I'm running a DT XM180 shock, which doesn't have any propedal type platform damping, so I put that down to the execution of the suspension - it just seems to work so efficiently. The last 5.5 incher I had was a Cove Hustler. Nice bike for sure, but the suspension was simply not as efficient. I've found this bike pretty much swallows it all up, a very capable ride. I must say, given quite a light build, I'm surprised how planted and robust it feels when things get rough. And stiffness is the other thing-with the Magura fork, you can really boot the bike through corners. I would say hands down this is the best full susser I've ridden.

    Anyway, off the back of this I am planning on ditching my Santa Cruz and hanging the parts off an AM - I think that'll be a super ride. The main reason is that, while the Nomad is sweet and great on the downs, I find it pretty unrefined and choppy on the ups. I figure that the the AM will be a better big bike for me than the Nomad for big ride and Alps duties (and fun in the woods!). I imagine it'll climb a lot better than the Nomad, which I tried with both a DHX5 Air (a terrible shock on the Nomad) and a DHX Coil.

    Went for the Helius Rohloff first ride today, didn't have to stop to re adjust anything. It was a foul day, rain all day, so the weather was the ideal for the purpose of the build.

    Took the built up bike into my LBS, they're a Nicolai dealer, who weighed the bike - 33 lbs.

    Not too bad considering that its built up with the Rohloff and coil shock front and rear. Rode in the typical Nicolai fashion - very neutral and dependable, no surprises.

    Its a Fox Van 2008 200mm eye to eye , with a 57mm stroke. Needs to be fitted in the second hole down.

    I recently upgraded the Helius with a new set of sweet wheels and new Manitou Minute fork to replace the Mavericks and the old Hope hoops. Oh and a new chainset, cos I stole the original to go on my Rohloff rigid bike.





    The forks are really very good. Stiff, light and very plush. And very easy to work on, which was needed to given they were put together on a Friday afternoon by someone who spent some time in the pub at lunch.. :mad:



    The wheels are built by a local wheelbuilder here in Wellington - he really is a great guy. You get a full printout of spoke tensions and weights with the wheels and they are really holding up perfectly. https://www.wheelworks.co.nz/

    I've recently removed the Maverick seatpost too and gone back to the Thompson as per the original build.

    Dunno the weight - but it's good going uphill. I'm too fat to care anyway.

    Once they've broken in they are a much nicer fork. They basically disappear and you just don't think about them anymore. For the weight they are very stiff, stiffer even than the Mavs. I liked the Mavs but they needed too much fettling to keep them sweet. Once I fixed the Manitous I haven't touched them except adding a little air as they break in.

    That said I'd get a genuine 150mm of travel from the Mavs and at best I've got 118mm from the supposedly 130mm Minutes - even when really banging them. As a result I've dropped the rear a setting - and the bike rides even nicer. Perfect now for the riding I actually do.

    I decided to match the frame with entry level parts (most of it) and see whether the frame will shine. And I was right (only in my humble opinion and I am not technically minded). Plus throwing in the Alfine hub to meet the winter demand here in the UK. I was stoked with the bikes full performance. Although the fork has not bedded in fully yet it never missed a beat, nailed all the jumps and a couple of flat landings and the chain held up without the use of any chain guide. After hammering it down the Whites I found out that the frame design doesn't punish the rear shock and in my opinion you don't need any lock-out at all. It climbs really well and descents phenomenally. On the whites trail - it climbs better and descents even better than my titus motolite (again, this is only based on my humble opinion and experience). It is quite a heavy set-up but I don't feel that the bike is heavy at all. I am really pleased with my All Mountain Winter Tank!

    Hi, that was a expensive moment , letting you have a ride certainly did make an impression.

    Glad you like the Nicolai, as you know I've got 2 (one with conventional gears and a Rohloff hub).

    I'm sure they would be more popular if there were demo bikes available. Very stable and neutral is how I would describe the ride.

    Camo looks good, did think about that colour scheme, but I'm not that brave. Bet it attracts a great deal of attention - I'll keep an eye out on Whites.

    Thank you. The cable routing is excellent, you can run the alfine gear cable 180degree no problem what so ever. I've had this frame for a month now and it is an ex-display model so I did not wait for it. Believe me, it will be worth the wait!

    You won't believe this, but I've never ridden the Gap!

    Had planned to ride with some other locals as I don't know the route and my navigation skills are pretty poor.

    Every time we planned the ride the weather was very bad, its not a ride to do when the weather is wet and windy - its quite exposed in places.

    Drop me an email when you plan to do it - I'd like to join you, but I'm not the quickest climber though. Great ride by all accounts, and a must for a camera.

    Thanks glad you like my bike. I got the rear rota from Hope through my LBS 'Psyclewerx' My mate who also has a Rohloff got his first I did not realise Hope did them but they do :thumbsup:

    I spent ages saving for the right components and making up my mind about the colour scheme (I was more than a little inspired by Nick-O-Lai's gorgeous bike) only to find the fit isn't quite right!     Cheers Mugtree. The issue is with the top tube not leaving much standover height. I've taken it round Cannock and it's perfectly rideable as it is, it just isn't 'right'.

    I know how you feel. After I had my CC stolen I got an AC and it was brilliant bike but just not right for me. It is very difficult to put my finger on it but it always felt heavy, not as agile as the CC and slow yet it was a bit lighter. Anyhoo I kept it as I loved it and it rode so well esp downhill. Now it too has been stolen so I'll be getting a CC to replace it :o)

    I hope you manage to get it sorted one way or another, but I know exactly how you feel.

    Normal SPD's will save you a fair chunk, as will a set of nice carbon bars.

    Strangely you can drop about 150g's by going to bonty foam grips over lock ons.

    None the less, nice bike

    Testman I'm the same. It was my beloved CC that got me addicted to Nicolais. I'm about to order my second CC and third Nicolai. For me the CC is the perfect bike and the 2010 looks amazing. Thanks for posting the picture.

    I've noticed a few people on here use shocks with a 57mm stroke rather than 50.9mm as suggested on the Nicolai tech sheets. What difference does this make to the suspension action - if any?

    Actually a lot, but not all with the goal to crank down the weight.
    - obviously swapped the seatpost for Eason carbon (saves about 150 grams)
    - Changed handle bar to Answer carbon AM (about 70 grams)
    - Replaced rims by ZTR crest and spokes by DT revolution
    - Changed Minnions 2.3 by advantage 2.2
    - Ti bolts were possible
    - changed lock grips by ESI which are remarkably good!

    The bike has to stay reliable and suited for AM riding, so I guess it's now pushed to the limit.

    Made a few changes to mine since I posted the pics.

    Now running a Fox RP23 shock 200x50mm, XTR shifters and a 2011 Fox 32 Talas RLC 110/140 with Kashima.

    The 2011 fork is a big improvement over the 09 version - I liked the 09 but the newer fork is plusher and smooths out small bumps better.
    Decided to try a regular volume RP23 (09 so not the boost valve one) as I found the DT Swiss shock blew through it's mid stroke too easily if you ran 25-30% sag so the only option was to reduce the sag and that made it harsh. The RP23 seems to be an improvement and I prefer the option of pro-pedal to the full lock out on the SSD190. It's not as plush over small bumps as the SSD was but feels more taught and controlled.

    You can then load them 2 ways -
    Either - copy the link for each picture from photobucket and then when posting a reply click the 'insert image' symbol (the mountains with a yellow background) and paste the url into the box.
    Or - althernatively copy the [img][img/] link from photobucket and post it directly into your reply.

    Well first ride yesterday, headed off to Llandegla with my mate.

    The weather was awful, proper cold & misty! So we headed off up the first climb - what we could see of it anyway. The first few bits were a nice 'getting used to bit' and then we came to the first black - all went rather well, the front end tracked very well indeed and the whole bike just felt very stiff.

    I noticed the seat-stays are much bigger than on my older ('06) one, on that they measure around 19mm on this one they're closer to 24mm!

    We then did the new black including Parallel Universe, as a bit more jumpy/rocky kinda run, played wit air pressures in the shock and rebound settings etc on the shock & fork and re-ran the fun. 2nd trip down it all felt very good, but a bit soft at the back so 5psi went back in the shock for the 3rd run - the rebound setting stayed the same.

    The fork tracks very well, is plenty stiff and has a nice smooth action, despite feeling slightly stiff off the bike, it sits up in it's travel and has a nice progressive ramp up towards the end, never feeling harsh, just confidence inspiring.

    In the end we went and played on the free-ride park for around 45mins, and despite my general lack of jumping prowess the bike handled very well, coping with the big (4 foot is huge to me) drops and big ass tables.

    The bike climbs very well, and rips the single track way better than my old one. Money well spent me thinks.

    That is a fabulous colour. Is it metallic or flat - it looks like it has a metallic, almost pearlescent quality to it and looks sublime, especially with the forks.

    Hope it's riding well for you although I still think that the damper is going to be the weak link; calling it a damper may be a little too generous as from my experience and reading reports about DT air cans, they are all spring and no damping.

    But don't let that stop you! It's a fab looking and fab riding bike!

    Cheers, it's a candy finish so a bit pearlescent and very shiny gloss finish.

    I'll give it a few rides on the DT but first impressions are good. I've got a pushed RP3 off my old frame to try, may even pick up one of those cheap Monarchs that crop up from time to time.

    Geetee, I think you may have made the same comment about the DT shock to me when I posted my newly built CC (further up the thread). I decided to try it and I have found that if the terrain isn't that rough then I do notice the shock moving through its mid travel quite a bit. However when the ride is more properly suited to FS, I do not notice it and can therefore say that it is doing its job well. I read an interesting post somewhere else on MTBR about the Fox RP23, that most people will select the medium setting and never use the full amount of travel available, and effectively stiffen the rear end, negating what a FS frame is meant to do. Dare I say that the excellent anti bob compression damping of the Fox shock allows some frame manufacturers a certain degree of "slack" in the design of their pivot and linkages?

    It's an interesting thought, but not one I could really comment on to be honest. I think the only things that really matter are that a) you're happy with how the DT rides and b) that's a damn fine Nicolai you have!

    Sometimes I let my own opinions become mantras for what other people should also think, which is wrong of me! My experience of a thing isn't the same thing as any one else's experience of a thing.

    Had the 2nd ride at the weekend, and to be fair the DT seems to be doing it's job nicely.

    It feels a little strange when locked out as it's locked at full extension so the SA becomes pretty damn steep. I might take the RP3 on my next ride and try them back 2 back and see if I can tell the difference.

    Will post back after some real riding but initial impressions are very good. Moved from a Mojo SL and transferred the bulk of the build across. Had nearly pressed the button on a Mojo HD but started thinking about the amount of travel and the riding that I do. Localy wil run at 120 F & R days away Lakes, Dales Scotland will increase F & R travel 130 rear 140 front, 2 bikes in 1 !

    Liked the idea of the adjustability of this bike and the well thought out features for a UK trail bike.
