    ION 16 Extra bracing

Is the ION 16 available without the extra bracing on the head tube/main tubes join? I have a 2013 Helius AC that has been more than tough enough for my all day mountain adventures and I can't see the need for it. I am interested in ordering and building as light an ION as is reasonable that will still cope with the Lake District!

As I will be getting custom geometry, I wonder if Nicolai also do just standard tubing without the extra bracing.

To really find out, just write them an email...

The Ion16 prototypes did not have the gusset at the headtube, but after testing the frames they opted to make that gusset. Most likely for a good reason... Weightwise the gussets are negligible, they are really quite small and probably well under 100g...

Scarlet, save the weight elsewhere, it's a much better place to do it. Thats a highly stressed location and the extra gussets are related to the length of frames but also the leverage of the fork, so longer forks = more leverage.

The AC is rated to a mx 160mm I think, the Ion 170mm

Lighter/strong wheels, lighter bar, lighter cassette...
    Aka chainline...

Thanks. I have run the AC with 160mm forks for 2 years and absolutely smashed it with no issues so can't see that I need all the extra bracing but I guess they are covering the 170mm option. Unfortunately here in the Lake District you can't go too far with light wheels or they just die on you but heard good things about the latest DT Swiss wheels holding up really well so may try those.

EX471 rated well. Or buy Mavic with the 3 year extended warranty for a new set every year if they break!
