    Cycle-CNY / IMBA Chapter development

The Cycle-CNY club leadership wants to do more for the mountain biking community in the Southern Tier of NY.

In order to take the next step, our group will be forming an official IMBA Chapter. We’re looking for your feedback and support. Please take a minute to view the information on our forum link and provide some feedback!

    Some background on our group...
•In 2005, the Cycle-CNY.com website was formed to serve as an information hub for mountain biking and cycling in Central New York, and specifically for mountain biking in the Southern Tier of NY. As of 2011, the Cycle-CNY forum has over 500 register users. Cycle-CNY has strictly been volunteers and donations. Cycle-CNY has never charged a membership fee.

•In 2006, Cycle-CNY signed an Adopt-A-Natural-Resource agreement with the NYS DEC to become the official trail stewards of Shindagin Hollow State Forest. Since that time, Cycle-CNY has organized over 1,900 hours of documented trail maintenance activities, including the formal marking of a trail system and the construction of new trails. Cycle-CNY renewed this 5 year agreement with the DEC in 2011.

•In 2006, Cycle-CNY became an IMBA-affiliated club and partnered with IMBA to host a weekend of trail building education, involving formal classroom instruction followed by hands-on field activities, culminating in the creation of 1.5 miles of new trail in Shindagin Hollow State Forest.

•In 2008, Cycle-CNY led a partnership with the NYS DEC and the Town of Caroline Highway Department to create a new public parking lot on Brearley Hill Rd.

•In 2009 and 2011, we represented the mountain bike community by attending and providing formal feedback on the NYS DEC’s Rapid Waters Unit Management Plan, which outlines use of several of the state forest lands currently open to mountain biking in Ithaca-area, including Shindagin Hollow.

Everything is on track to make the IMBA Chapter thing happen for Cycle-CNY in mid-December. We're really excited to move this forward, and looking forward to forging stronger partnerships with the Southern Tier mountain bike community.

We would really like to hear from anyone who wants to play an active role in leading this group. We'll have vacancies for board of director roles and officer positions for election. Check out the Cycle-CNY web page for more info. We'd like to ensure representation from all the counties in our geographic area.

We'll also be doing a logo contest soon. Design a new Cycle-CNY logo, win prizes!

Around the New Year we'd like to host a celebration party and information session. We'll keep you posted.

We are pleased to announce that Cycle-CNY has become a Chapter of IMBA!

Cycle-CNY is on a mission to promote mountain biking as a viable activity for sheer enjoyment, as a vehicle to long-term health, and as a conduit to better understand the fragile environment we cohabitate.

Cycle-CNY brings a voice to your local mountain bike community. With your support, we’ll work hard to improve current trail conditions, raise funds for trail work projects, organize group rides, races, and events, and most importantly provide us with a stronger and more reputable voice when working with local land management organizations to develop larger and better-designed trail systems.

You need a cause. There’s nothing wrong with starting with things you love to do. Beginning March 16, Cycle-CNY will offer a joint membership program with IMBA. Your membership directly supports both national and local mountain bike initiatives. Be a link in the chain. Become a member…visit IMBA.com now.

Cycle-CNY is governed by a board-of-directors and has four elected officers, all supported by the joint Cycle-CNY and IMBA membership program. More information can be found at www.cycle-cny.com.

Come out to our Chapter kickoff party and meet your Chapter leadership on Friday, April 13, 6-9pm at Lot 10 in Ithaca. Munchies, cash bar, Chapter shirts for sale, raffle items, etc...and a short presentation on the big events we're planning for 2012.

If you live in Upstate NY and are renewing your IMBA membership help them out and select them as your affiliated chapter. At least until a new chapter is formed that is closer to you, or you are closer to NYCMTB, which also recently became an IMBA Chapter!
