Good job! Tunnel/Otero Trail Work w/US Forest Svc

Today (Sat) was the first US Forest Svc work day out at Tunnel/Otero. Since Notaknob is busy out at Moab, I thought I'd fill in for him. Turned out to be a good day and we cut in 1/2-3/4 of new single track in 4 hrs.

If you missed it, fret not! Tomorrow (Sunday 29 Apr) you can meet up at 0930 at the Tunnel parking lot for Day II.

The obligatory US Gov safety briefing before getting our PPE

After a 5 min hike up we started cutting in trail

Busting out small pine & juniper trees by hand is a good workout

    Teamwork!

Why we do it... MOAR SINGLETRACK!!!

These stubs don't remove themselves, unfortunately

    SKerry rocks

Where we came - Tunnel Trailhead somewhere behind & below the yellow hardhats

Where we're headed - somewhere over the peak off to the far left by the end of the summer

    Happy Trails

Thanks for contributing some sweat equity Nate. The Moab trip was planned long ago to coincide with the car show. I'll be out there for the next work session.

I'm sore as heck from all that manual labor, so I'm self medicating with a growler of La Cumbre's Chew & Swallow Oatmeal Stout and ibuprofen.

    Nate,

Thanks for all the hard work today. I think we had a total of 15 folks out and that was no easy digging so drink up! BTW - Cheers through the interweb, I'm enjoying a SKA IPA at the moment.

If we keep making progress like that, we'll be riding this thing before the summer is over!

    Cheers,

We had 7 volunteers today and got one of the climbing turns done (big berm to carve on). Once we finish the other turn, we'll start forging ahead. Hope to see some big groups out next month!

    Thanks for the help everyone.

    Thanks everyone!
There are what I believe a few odds and ends up there but not anything I'd really call a trail with maybe the route straight up the drainage. The new trail will use some old stuff but for the most part it will be all new. Unfortunately I couldn't route it on top of the ridge due to DOD boundary (in one place it cuts straight down the mountain). However, there's some really cool views and riding in what we'll be putting in (and possibly another trail way off in the future that would hit the ridge going north..).

Bob "We-Should've-Brought-a-Rockbar" Galloway is an animal....We may have to rename it Bob's Trail since he's been there almost every build day.

I didn't get many good photos but here's one of Ryan working near the cliff top...

It's on the REI website - National Trails Day Project 2 Tunnel Canyon Advanced Trail - Albuquerque REI. It'd be great to have 30 people working on a trail at one time.

Maybe a trail building fool? Too much trail building, not enough riding. Still trying to figure out why I showed up both days. Two possible reasons: 1) Pavlov's dog phenomenon, associating trail building with home brew; or 2) trying to atone for the spanking "Second Chance" Kerry gave me on Faulty last week.

I need to get a bike up there and start finding the lines.

Great turnout for National Trails Day today. We had 28 folks out building new trail - digging stumps, moving brush and digging resulting in another .5 mile of new trail. After gpsing all the work so far, we've gotten about 1.1 miles done with about 1.4 more to build (we remeasured and the new trail will be 2.5 miles long).

We've got several more work weekends left (June 16th & 17th being the next (yes I know it's Fathers Day/24 hours of EF)). I'm pretty confident we can finish this season if we keep it up.

Thanks again for all who have come out so far!

    K

Here's a few pictures. My apologies but with 28 volunteers, not much time to take pictures...

Placitas Tim: did you leave a brown cap out on the last trail day and walk out with your hard hat? The cap is on a stump at one of the rock turns in a wash.

Trail work this Sat & Sun. I rode the finished section yesterday...cool riding along the rock ledges. Will be great when finished.

Also, a reminder that we'll be having an after work cookout on Sept 22nd. Free beer and food for folks that have come out and helped.

Another great day. Fourteen volunteers and a ton more completed including the first steep oak sections...lots a digging, rock work, etc. Here are a few photos. Hope to see folks tomorrow and/or Sept 22nd (don't forget bbq/cookout afterward).

Bruce, if you come out tomorrow, I'll have the fork.....if not, you'll have to wait another three weeks or so...just saying.

First time out there helping out, I will be out for the 22nd for sure. Helping out on this really has made me look at everything on the trails much differently now, seeing how much time can go into certain sections that you pass in a blink of the eye.

The following dates we'll be meeting at the Tunnel Trailhead at 9:30am and working till 2pm. With limited parking, please carpool if possible (feel free to park extra cars at the office in Tijeras).

If you plan to work, please come dressed in pants and closed toed shoes (I've had folks show up in sandals before...) and have food and water for the day - all folks will be required to wear a hardhat and gloves during the workday which will be provided (you're welcome to bring your own). PLEASE NO PETS!!

Feel free to contact me if you have questions. Otherwise, we'll see you out there.

    2012 Dates:

    *April 28 & 29
    *May 19-20
*June 2 - National Trails Day
    *June 16-17
    *July 14-15
    *Aug 18-19
*Sept 22 - National Public Lands Day
    *Oct 13-14

If the Forest is closed for fire, then we will not be working.

    Nate,

I'm hopeful we'll get it done this season. Of course, it all depends on how many folks show up on the workdays. We've only got three more days scheduled at the moment (Sept 22 & Oct 13 &14) but I'm also trying to line up some other groups that want to do service hours and such. If we don't complete in October we'll be close and I'll probably put up another work weekend in early November to finish it up. Of course Bob will be out there by himself in the driving snow I'm sure if it's not done ...

We better get to ride it before the snow flies! Completing this project in a summer is pretty amazing considering the level of construction we've had to do with all the rock and such but when it's done it will be a great addition to the system.

Hope to see you in Sept!

    K

Ok, so I’m Old Skool. I seems to fix on certain names and don’t want to change. What’s with NM337? Naw, that’s South 14, always will be. Then there are trail names. “Crop Duster”? Nope, always will be “Lone Pine” for me. “West Ridge”? No way, it can only be “Rambo”. “Bird House” for the new Tunnel Canyon trail? Whatever, but I don’t think the name really fits. So I hereby nickname the new trail “Kerry’s Bone”. I know what y’all are thinking and y’all can keep spinning those thoughts in your mind but the analogy is to a dog bone Kerry has been gnawing at for a long time. And in case there is some rule about not naming anything after anybody still alive, I’ll call it “The Bone”, as in riding the Bone, nailing the Bone, endoing on the Bone, losing it on the Bone. And if y’all would rather call it “Bird House”, no problem. Just blow a kiss at the Bone as you ride by…

Ok, ok. Right now it is "get 'er done" on Kerry's Bone. The next work days are October 13 and 14. Kerry can smell the finish at the top and then there is just the connection at the bottom.

Was that riding up Tunnel and going up the shortcut or toting the bike up the wash down at the bottom?

No I didn't ride the short cut either way. Rode the full finished trail length both directions.

Anyone have any idea why the Bureau of Land Management (DOI) has been doing boundary surveys along the withdrawal boundary recently? They were up there again yesterday. Lot's of new benchmarks, etc. Seems redundant to the recent survey by other fed agencies.
