    Gallup Trail info

Thinking about checking out Gallup trails in next few weeks. I've heard parking at the trailhead is a little sketchy as far as theft, anyone know if this is the case? Any info would be appreciated also any 411 on trails near Ft. Wingate. Thanks

I have not heard of any problems lately but who knows?

Ride in the Zuni Mountains if you are worried...

I used to think the west side of High Desert was eerie, but in recent years, I've left my car unattended there all day without incident. Very popular p-lot because of the slickrock. Never had a problem on the east side either. Just use common sense, and don't leave anything in sight that even remotely resembles something of value in any p-lot anywhere in NM.

Haters love to hate Gallup, so one trailhead break-in is still referred to 10 years later. Whereas, 10 break-ins in Abq are forgotten in a week. With one exception, I wouldn't leave my vehicle in any trailhead p-lot within 40 mi of Abq.

The Zuni's (near Ft Wingate) are one of the most peaceful places in NM. If you don't have a preference, Hilso TH is a very good place to hit the trails in the Zuni's. It's one of the first coming up 400, is right next to the road, has a bathroom and the trail out of the parking lot leads right into the heart of the trail system. You could leave a baby sitting on the hood of your car in the Zuni's, and people would be feeding it and singing it lullabies when you got back.

Coal Street Pub, El Rancho Hotel. Actually, a favorite of mine for breakfast or lunch is Alicias Burrito Express located in the back of the Lowes supermarket at 66 & Ford, 1 block south of Exit 22 off I40. Smokeys, just north of Exit 20, has bbq meat menu, beer choices, Harley biker ambiance, meh.
