Have a older Motobecane 700ds Should i build it or buy a new bike?

Got a free mountain bike. Its an older Motobecane 700ds...Pretty much just the frame and rear shock.Everything else is from a Specialized. Bike rides like crap, Suspension is soft, Has trouble switching gears...Missing back brake.
Wondering if i should build it or just buy a new bike. Can i build something decent with 500 or am i better off buying a new bike.

Nope. Those older full suspension frames were pretty bad to start. Only good thing about them over a wally world bike is frame size availability. Other than that, if it works now, i'd do the absolute minimum to get it working as an exercise bike. 10 miles of asphalt or gravel path with that will be like 30 miles on a good road bike.

I would buy a hardtail frame and swap the parts over from the Motobecane. You can get new 26" Marin frames on ebay for about $130, assuming they have the size you need. Then sell the veavy, clunky Motobecane frame to offset the cost of the new frame.
