How do you still like your Fantom? I've been looking at doing another bike build. Let me know

Loving it still....though the bike is not as clean anymore LOL! All of the high end components still amaze me, but looking to eventually swap out the not so high end parts; Headset, Hubs, and Quick Release Seatpost Clamp.

Thanks for all your pics and comments here and on youtube. Dumb question, but have you had it/her out on *cough* pavement at all?

Yup I have taken it out on the streets (main reason I wanted to get rid of my full sus 26er) and it's exactly as I imagined. Very smooth rolling and power transfer is perfect. To top things off, this bike comes with the tight-knobbed Small Block 8 tires

    Congratulations on the new ride.

You bought the 15.5. How tall are you? I am considering this bike and the 700ht. I am 5' 10". My inseam is 30". I was thinking the 15.5 for the 29er and 17 for a 26er.

Any who, good luck with the bike.

    Not a Fantom, but a BD 29er.

In my opinion, the Gravity isn't as nice looking as the Motobecane 29er HTs. I had purchased this Gravity a few months back, then very shortly after, BD released their 2012 Fantom 29ers :(

Anyhow, it rides very nicely and is very fun

At 5'10" I think you will be cramped on their 15.5 models. I ride one of their Fly Team Ti 29 models in 15.5 and I'm much shorter than yourself.

Thanks! I'm 5'6" and it fits me perfectly, so I'd recommend getting the next size up (in both bikes). My 5'8" cousin got the 17" in the 600HT, and it is a bit small. Stand over might be an issue on the 29er, but you would feel way too cramped on a small.

I am riding a trek 3700 now. Frame size 19.5 and it is to big. The top tub comes right up to my croch when standing. I measured my inseam without shoes on and it is 30". Reading the stand over #s on BD is a little sketchy. I know I what to have 2-3" of slack when standing over the bike.

Also the 19.5" frame feels hard to control for me. Not impossible just not right.

Does BD measure standover at the midway or closer to the seat?

I'm still trying to decide between Fantom and Gravity. I know of cable routing and cr4sht3st mentioned the Gravity frame has rear rack mounts. Here's an attempt to mashup the geometries to the same units of measure (warning, I probably screwed up):

    Code:

                    (Fantom/Gravity)
    Size                15.5                17.5                19                21
    Eff Top Tube        23/22.4                24.3/23.7        25/24.5                25.7/25.3
    Chainstay        460/445                460/445                460/445                460/445
    BB Drop                53/31.2                53/31.2                53/31.2                53/31.2
    Seat Angle        73/73                72.3/72.5        72/72                72/72
    Head Angle        70/69.5                70/69.5                70/69.8                70/69.8
    Wheel Base        1102.9/1090        1129/1116        1141.1/1127        1159.6/1148
    Standover        31/29.7                32.4/30.5        33.8/31.3        35.2/32.6

    Nice ride!

I'm also looking to buy one of these. If it's not much trouble; what's the length from bottom bracket along the seat post to the seat as you have it now? Also what's the length from the front of the saddle to the bars? It looks your seat is set forward all the way, about how much room do you have to go back?

I'm 5' 9.5"w/ a 30.5" inseam barefooted and I'm looking at that size. An online fit calculator set my ETT range between 582 to 604mm, so the 15.5 fits right into my low-end at 584.2, my current bike's ETT is 586 which doesn't feel cramped.
The 17.5" has an ETT just out of my range at 617 and a stand over height that makes me wince a bit. Plus, I like that the 15.5 has a shorter wheelbase than the 17.5.

Sorry it took me so long, but I finally got around to take some measurements. I have swapped out the stock 110mm stem for a shorter 75mm stem and have moved the seat back about .5". Answers in red:

    I'd probably go 17 on the 29er.

Question for you guys that have the Fantom 29ers. Right now I am leaning towards the Fantom 29er Trail, but the one component that has me worried is the fork. It seems that a lot of people recommend staying away from low end Suntour forks. Does anyone have any complaints in particular on these forks that own a Fantom?
  • 07-10-2012

Low end suntour forks tend to not have adjustable rebound damping, just a hydraulic lockout for the compression side, and as such they're best suited as OEM forks on bikes. Not as what you spec for an aftermarket type custom build. The higher end (Epicon series for example) forks are what you should be looking at.

Finally have some decent pictures of my Fantom 29Pro 15.5". Changed the stem and bars, then went to a set back seatpost. That was a great help. Put my weight to the back for a better downhill ride and more comfortable leg stride. I have a set of Stan's Arch EX wheels that I will get on real soon and they'll be tubeless with Maxxis Ignitor tires. That will shed a lot of weight off what now feels like a bomber bike. Enjoy.

Bike looks great OP, is that mounting I see for a bottle holder on the seat tube? I would have thought the 15.5 was too small for that. I just ordered a Fanom29 Trail 15.5.

Yup, there's bottle mounts on the seat tube on this size. Was kind of upset to find these on the small, since I like to drop my seat.

You can't just take the screws out to get the tube lower ?

The bottle mounts use a nutsert pressed into the tube (or, at least they do on my Gravity from BD).
