Where to winter ride in Madison......

..... when there is no snow on the ground, and one does not have a fat bike?

I'm a recent transplant here, and I'd love to ride in this cool, snow-free weather. I'm assuming Blue Mound/Kettle Moraine/Camrock, etc. are "closed for the season", no?

    Any ideas are much appreciated.

Hi, welcome to the Madison area. If the ground is frozen solid, you're good. In below but near-freezing temps you'll want to ride early or after dark, especially if the sun is out. If you're making ruts, stop riding. That's pretty much it.

You've got through Saturday to ride. Earlier in the day, the better.

Thanks! Does this mean any of the places I mentioned above would be open to biking, pending a thaw?

You'll want to check individual trail conditions. madcitydirt.com and there's a trail info line for Kettle Moraine S Unit, Google for it.

Well, I'm leaning towards either Blue Mound or Carlin/Muir on Sunday, which is to have a high in the low 40's. Both are listed as "open", but which would be better on a 40 degree day, assuming a little bit of thaw?

    Thanks again.

Probably Muir. I really have no idea what things are like there after it thaws, but it could be a mess.
