    Preferred direction - Blue Mound

What is the preferred direction to ride Blue Mound State Park? (The one in Wisconsin, not the phony "Blue Mounds" in Minnesota)

I've been here a couple of years, but time constraints/prior commitments has prevented me from riding there.

The official state park map seems to indicate a counter-clockwise direction. Is this preferred? I hiked a small section of Holy Schist whilst camping there this summer, and CCW seems like it may be the way to go. Is this a one-directional trail, like some trails are becoming out West? I'm not against super-technical, but I'd want to ride as much as cleanly possible without dabbing.

    TIA!

The trail is one way (other than Pokerville which is an out and back), starting from the trailhead you go counter clockwise. After less than 1/4 mile you have to decide if you want to go over to the Overlode trail which is slightly less technical than the trail around the mound but has some seriously steep climbs (not so steep you can't ride them but I usually have to stop once or twice for my lungs to catch up.) Gneiss & Smooth is lots of fun, chert dip has some newer flow trail built into it. Holy Schist is just fun and rocky but most of it is clearable. I struggle on the home stretch uphill as it's long and grinding with tech like ever 20ft. All clearable but I usually mess up once or twice at super slow speed and dab and breathe.

Now that I'm less into XC and more into tech and fun, Blue Mound is definitely my favorite within 90 minutes of Madison. But Pokerville I don't like at all. It's not overly flowy and the rock gardens are above my skill level and don't seem that fun. It'd be a sweet snowcovered fat bike trail though as the grades are gentle and it's really nice back there.

I'll give you three guesses, and the first two won't count.

The next couple of days are probably the last chance to ride there for the next couple of months. GAME ON!

    I have a car. I made a choice. I ride my bike.
